In 1967 Bengal, the village of Naxalbari became the birthplace of a revolution. Who owns the land? Who does the Labour? And who deserves the rights? The echoes of this revolution gradually reached Punjab. During this time a young poet was emerging: Avtar Singh Sandhu (Better known as 'Pash'). Pash himself came from a farming family and remained a controversial figure. Many people were inspired by his ideas but many questions were also raised about him. Around 1970, at just 18 or 19 years old, his first book "the iron tale" had already been published. The tone of this book was rebellious:

Transliterated: "Main ticket kharch karke tuhadda Jamhooriyat da naatak dekhya hai. Hun taan mera naatak hall ch beh ke, haay haaye aakhan, te cheekan maaran da haqq banda hai"

Translated: "I paid for a ticket to watch your drama of democracy. Now I have earned the right to sit in the theatre, cry out, and raise my voice"

After this book was released he was charged with murder and spent two years in prison. He continued writing there as well. In 1975, under Indira Gandhi, India entered the Emergency. State censorship and injustice began to increase. By the 1980s, the atmosphere in Punjab had become even heavier. On one side there was state repression and on the other Khalistani militancy was gaining momentum. Pash urged people to wake-up:

Transliterated: "Sab toh katarnak hunda ae murda shanti naal bhar jaana. Na hona tadap da, sab sehan kar jaana. Gharan ton nikalna kam te, te kam toh ghar jaana. Sab toh khatarnak hinda ae supnian da mar jaana"

Translated: "The most dangerous thing is to be filled with lifeless peace. To lose all restlessness and silently endure everything. To leave home from work and return home from work. The most dangerous thing is for the dreams to die"

During the Bhindranwale era, as Khalistani ideology and religious extremism were rising, Pash openly spoke against them. On 23 March, 1988 Pash was shot dead (by Khalistani militants).

Hi I live in Kolkata,West Bengal India.As my school is near local Gurudwara Behala so I am interested in Sikhism.
Q1.Suppose hypothetically speaking BJP allows referendum in India (i)How a person who is taking part in the referendum can prove that he is really a Sikh not fake Hindu(Muslim men it can identified very easily) sponsored by RSS.
It could be vice-versa also imagine how a gora Sikh can really prove that he is a Sikh and not sponsored by the K-groups.

There will be no revolution, if everyone thinks it will start from next door

Since Punjab became a Sikh-majority state after Haryana was separated, I have always wondered why Sikhs kept voting for parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress. Many people say these parties were corrupt or made bad choices. Some people also criticize Akali Dal for working with the BJP, while others still have problems with Congress because of its history.

Why do you think so many Sikhs voted for these parties? Was it because they agreed with their ideas, there were no better choices, village politics, caste, local leaders, or something else?

I want to have a serious discussion about the history and politics, not a fight between political parties

I to was blessed where my parents never brought up caste, my first encounter was when a girl asked me my caste and I had to ask my parents

Sikh Panth is in shambles because we have veered away from Guru Nanaks Sikhi (teachings)

How have politicians in Punjab been able to use divide-and-rule politics for so many years?

Instead of people coming together to demand better jobs, schools, hospitals, lower corruption, and accountability, it often seems like political parties can keep voters focused on religion, caste, identity, or other issues that divide communities. Meanwhile, many of the same political families and elites stay in power.

Why do you think this strategy has worked in Punjab? Is it because of the media, local political networks, a lack of strong alternatives, historical events, or something else?

I'm interested in a serious discussion about Punjab's political history and why divide-and-rule tactics may or may not have been effective—not partisan arguments

We don't need this type of publicity. Guy did a deliberate set-up. Now its backfiring on us. We need to distance ourselves from clowns like this guy and Digwa.

It's interesting how public opinion can change with time.

When the farmers' protests were happening, many protesters from Punjab felt they were unfairly labelled as "Khalistanis" or accused of being part of a foreign-funded movement instead of having their concerns heard. Today, with the NEET protesters facing police action such as lathi charges, tear gas, and water cannons, many of the same voices are speaking out against the government's response and asking for justice.

It shows how perspectives can change when different people experience similar situations. Perhaps the lesson is that every peaceful protest deserves to be heard on its own merits rather than dismissed with labels or assumptions.

Whatever our political views, if people are protesting peacefully, their concerns should be addressed through dialogue and due process. I hope the NEET students receive a fair hearing and that justice is delivered wherever wrongdoing is found.
