The plan to add two new apartment buildings to the undeveloped side of the Rio Lake was not approved yesterday by the Gaithersburg City Council, and the developer has been given an indefinite amount of time to revise and resubmit.

Regardless of how one feels about the NIMBYism of wanting to protect the green spaces and general vibe of Rio as it is, this was a sensible decision given that the current plans didn't adequately address the traffic concerns (the only access to these new buildings would have been through the Uncle Julio's parking lot).

Honestly pleasantly surprised by this, I cynically assumed that the concerns of the community were going to be ignored and that the developers plans would be rubber-stamped. I guess sometimes democracy works.

Moving locally, need recommendations for movers. I have had experience with Piece of Cake up in NYC, recently saw they service DC area too.

Biggest priorities:

- Efficiency

- Attention to preventing damage to walls, floors, furniture etc.

Sometime between last evening and mid-afternoon today, our car was broken into while parked in front of our house (driveway) in Twinbrook near the metro. My spouse discovered it when he went to run an errand this afternoon, when he saw things from the glove compartment on the floor. There’s no broken windows or other visible evidence of the break-in. We didn’t have anything valuable in the car, so nothing was stolen as far as we can tell.

Sharing in case this also happened to anyone else.

I’m going to file a police report just in case it might help with any other robberies or car thefts in the area.

I am 25F and work in Rockville. I am looking to stay in MoCo and I am considering Rockville and Gaithersburg. I would be open to Bethesda too but I have a car and I hear parking fees in Bethesda are awful.

I want to spend less than $1300 on my share. I am quiet, clean, and respectful of others. It is important to me that my roommate share those same qualities as I view my home as a place that is relaxing and where I can decompress.

It looks like the new development plans of adding apartments comically close to the carousel and removing the remaining green space are going to get approved. Such a bummer, building it up more is going to ruin the aesthetics, vibe, and exacerbate the traffic issues, but hey, there's money to be made so who cares about that.

Edit: Yes, there's a degree of NIMBYism here, wanting to protect a space my kids enjoy, but we need more affordable housing for families (which this is not), the stock of upscale 1-2 bedrooms apartments is already pretty high. Yes, it would marginally help, but wrecking the area for all of us doesn't seem worth it on balance.

Perhaps instead of just complaining I should maybe try organizing some more opposition ahead of the final July 20 vote...
