A few weeks ago y’all gave me some great recommendations for my trip to the Pinehurst area. Did Mid Pines and it was amazing. Will do the others on future trips.

Next up is a long weekend in Blowing Rock. I’ve got zero connections to get on there so it’s public golf. I’ve looked back through the sub and it looks like the choices are:

Boone GC
Mount Aire
Old Beau
Sugar Mountain

I’ll be playing as a single but with my wife who’s recovering from chemo and on the mend riding with me (unless there’s one better to walk so she can walk with me to build up her stamina as we are heading to Ireland at the end of August). We like to go in the afternoon to let those more serious enjoy their time without worrying about us. I play relatively fast but we do want to enjoy our time. Key thing since this one is not just about me are the views. I don’t think I can go wrong on this but if one is better I’d be grateful for this for her sake.

Booking a round this weekend for a buddy’s birthday. We usually play Reedy Creek or Heddingham, so looking for a bit of a nicer experience while still staying around $100 or less for weekend round. All of us are mid-teen handicap, with one mid 20s.

After researching Chapel Ridge, Keith Hills, and Neuse CC all have decent times available around $70-$80. We’ve never been to either and would love your recommendations on where should we play?

Suggestions outside of those three are also welcome.

We are staying in the Pinehurst area with our group of 12 and I am looking for the "best of the rest" courses in the area. Pinehurst courses are excluded since we aren't staying on-site and our plan is to try and get on Tobacco Rd, the Pines courses (Needles, South, Mid) and either Talamore or Mid South, since those seem to be very common recommendations.

However, with a group of 12 I imagine it may be a bit difficult, so I am hoping to have some back up options in case one or two of those fall through. Outside of Pinehurst and the ones I listed, what are some options I should look into?

Obviously, everyone has their own preferences, but we are looking for something kept in great condition and something the course offers that would make it memorable or stand out from others. That can be features on the course or even an awesome patio/bar/clubhouse.

Hi all! As the title says i will be moving to RDU in the coming weeks and I am looking for good course suggestions to check out that you think will fit my playstyle/skill. A little about me:

I played PGA Jr League for as long as I was eligible, then played some local junior tournaments and did high school golf. However, the competitiveness and awful coaches ruined my love for the game, so ever since about 6-7ish years ago I maybe put in 3-4 rounds a year. At my best the week before I quit high school golf, my best 18 hole was 89 and my best 9 hole was 40. Nowadays I am lucky to get close to breaking 90. My last round I’d played here was pretty bad high 90s maybe a stroke or two over 100. Not in as good of shape mobility wise as I once was, so I lost probably 10 yards of distance as I go easier to prevent another back issue.

Basically, I’ve worked at a very popular municipal golf course from my home town for 7 years, and that’s pretty much the only course I’ve played since quitting. I am also not used to paying for golf given my privileges as an employee lol. But I know everything from maintenance to daily operations and I’ve managed the shop and ran tournaments before.

So sorry for all the rambling, but what are your course recommendations that is not too expensive but also in decent enough shape to be respected. And would be accepting of more of a casual/less frequent golfer. Also, cheaper driving range ideas would be great as I want to practice more than 3 times a year lol. Though I know just as well as everyone else that the prices are insane after 2020 covid golf boom.

I'm not talking bucket list / "once in this lifetime" here. I want to know what your golf daydreams are. The courses or experiences that are kinda attainable enough to really stay a fixture of your imagination.

• Broomsedge
• The Lido
• Tobacco Road and Tot Hill with my wife to show her how much fun architecture can be
• An unhurried solo twilight walking round
• Pinehurst 2 or 10

Anyone know what the current condition of Longleaf family club in Pinehurst is? I know the construction was still ongoing 3-4 months ago and they were having watering issues.

Going to Durham and then driving down towards Fayetteville for work. What are my best options for a 3pm or later tee time that is under 100-120 dollars?

I have lived and played golf primarily on the West Coast (CA, AZ, WA). I very often play as a single since my friends all like stuff besides golf. I recently moved to Durham and have noticed something odd about my experiences playing here and it has happened more than once so I am wondering if it's a different etiquette out here.

Starters don't try to pair me with other players, even when I asked to be paired. And when I catch up to a twosome or threesome I never get the invite to join. Both of those things would never have happened where I played previously. Starters and Pro Shops always tried to make foursomes and paired singles up. And in the odd case where that didn't happen the people I met on the course universally invited me join if they had a spot. I don't ask to join, because that has never been the etiquette in the past for me, and seems a little weird to have to ask.

Is it weird to join up with strangers here? Or invite someone to join? NC has been so friendly and nice otherwise this has seemed really strange.

how hard are tee times to get? how’s pace of play? is there always someone up your ass the entire round? do you feel the membership is oversold?

play primarily on the weekends. open to both mornings and afternoons. just not ALWAYS trying to get paired every round (usually a twosome).

I recently toured both MacGregor Downs and 12 Oaks. MacGregor had the vibe I’m looking for: very classic club feel, good energy, beautiful views of the lake, and it just seemed like a place I’d want to spend time. 12 Oaks, on the other hand, felt more like a neighborhood development that happens to have a golf course. The dual membership is a nice perk for occasional variety or if the MDCC tee sheet is slammed, but realistically I see myself spending almost all my time at MacGregor.

MacGregor was aerating when I visited, so I didn’t get the full “member atmosphere.” For anyone who’s a member or familiar with the club:

• What’s the general age range like?
• Is the “older club” reputation actually true, meaning very few people in their 20s/30s, or is it more that there’s a healthy mix but skewed toward retirees?
• Who typically hangs around the bar/locker room after rounds, is there a social scene or is it quieter?
• Does the club feel packed, or is it comfortable day‑to‑day?

I’m 29, so I know I’ll be on the younger side anywhere, but I’m trying to get a realistic sense of the culture.

Also curious about the tee time situation. I know weekends use a lottery system but how close do you usually get to the time you request? And are tee times spaced at 10 minutes or is it something tighter?

I’m hoping to get a trial round soon so I can see it first hand, but how walkable is the course? Especially thinking about squeezing in 9 holes after work and I prefer to walk for better exercise.

For context, I’m also on the Prestonwood waitlist. Been on it for a year, and they’re still quoting ~3 years from the date you join. Hard to tell how accurate that is because every time I’ve been there with my buddy, the place feels absolutely packed.

Any insight from current or former members would be hugely appreciated!

Does anyone know of any group chats/communities where this weekend warrior can join or if you’re in the same boat as me and want to start up a group that would be great? None of my friends golf and golfing as a single seems to be less enjoyable (especially when you’re a high-mid handicap). I’m 25, and relatively new to golf. I live in Fuquay so Lochmere and Keith Hills are two courses I frequent but could drive within an hour in any direction.

Anyone know when the Neuse is doing their maintenance? Looking to play next week there. I didn’t see anything on their website.

We have a group of 12 coming to the area next week to play Southern Pines, Mid Pines, Tobacco Road, and Pine Needles. I was hoping we could get out on The Cradle in the afternoon on Friday after Mid Pines or on Saturday after Tobacco Road but I'm worried we won't be able to get a time. Any other alternatives you would recommend? On our trips we usually do an afternoon 9 hole scramble on one of the days but neither course let me book 9 hole or replay rounds ahead of time. Thanks!

Going on a trip next week to Morehead City. Anyone recommend any courses within 30-45 mins of that area. Never been in the area for golf before and want to get a round in while I’m out there. Thanks

Any recs on golf courses within a 20 minute radius of Goldsboro? Or heading back to Raleigh. Going out there for work and will get done before 10am could get out for a quick 18

We are going to the Pinehurst area next spring but not staying at Pinehurst. A couple people are pretty disappointed but the majority of our group is on a tighter budget. I am trying to reason with them saying we are still going to get to play premier courses. So, where would you place the best non-Pinehurst courses compared to the ones at the resort?

For example…

1. PH 2
   2 PH 10
   
2. Mid Pines
   
3. Tobacco Rd
   
4. PH 4

Or something like that…

Curious how everyone views the other courses in the area compared to Pinehurst.

Recently broke my TaylorMade Burner driver. Been wanting to upgrade for a while so this seems like a good excuse, I’m sitting around a 20 handicap. Should I get fit? Or just buy used? Budget for the new driver would be around 400.

TL;DR - Do I get lessons and fix swing with decades old clubs or get fitted with a bad swing?

What would you do? Would a fitter be able to properly fit me if there are areas I definitely need improvement on?

Please note, I know there’s a million threads about places to get fitted or who is good with lessons. I’m NOT trying to rehash those topics. I can do the research to find places to go. I just want to try to be somewhat smart as I try to get better.

Current Irons: hand me down Dunlop Tour 2400s that’s gotta be from the 90s or 00s, maybe older, idk.

Haven’t really swing clubs in several years but I’ve started going to the range a couple times a week. And im doing the typical YouTube golf swing fix yada yada where I watch 10 videos, then hit some balls to try to implement teachings.

I’m working on a slice but when I DO get a decent shot, the distance just isn’t there. I’m ready to invest some money to improve my game but I’m torn/cautious on the correct path.

Is it me or are a lot of the triangle golf SIM’s getting lazy calibrating their technology and charging more????? About a year or two ago they seemed fairly realistic hitting shots, based on yardage and slope, compared to what you’d hit on a course.

Lately, it’s like a club or a club and a half off!!!!! I know how to set the settings with Trackman, Foresight and others too. I’m a 5.9 HC and taking my normal swing I would on the course (again based on yardage and slope) and way short. It’s almost laughable. Even spin rate seems way off based on my normal setup and swing. You’re hitting off of a mat too which is actually supposed to add a little yardage (irons) as your club gets through clean. I don’t get it.

Anyone else noticing this?

This is like the third one in a couple months. I’m done with these places unless I just want to have some drinks and putz around hitting balls and not worrying about distance or accuracy.
