My high school best friend is getting married soon and I decided I should finally learn quilting to make their wedding gift and I finished it just in time! For the quilting I just traced over the front pattern and used a contrasting thread so it was visible on the back :)

A couple years ago I came across a box of my late great-grandmother’s shirts that my mom had in storage, and I was inspired by the Queer Eye show to make them into a memory quilt. I made my first ever quilt for my mom for Christmas and I had so much extra fabric, I thought I would make another for myself! The backing is a chicken print fabric because my GG collected all things chickens. I made a bunch of random 9-patches and arranged them together. Squares are 3 inches. I chose a pink thread for the quilting and am very happy with the how it turned out!

My mom decided that I could see my great grandmother’s quilt squares today. She doesn’t know all of the history but for sure the latest they were made was the 1940s. I recognize many names on the friendship quilt but didn’t know any of them. If she were alive my grandma would be 102 so that gives context considering these are her mothers.

A sweet 91 year old lady made this quilt! First one shes made for herself!! She did a beautiful job and took a chance on the purple thread I recommend! I think it looks amazing! My carpal tunnel surgery is tomorrow. Time for a rest.

At first I was unsure about my design choices but after finishing it, I couldn’t stop falling in love with it over and over again. It helps that the fabrics are beautiful 🍎🐴

I have an idea and my googling skills are failing me. Does anyone have any quilts or pictures of quilts that are inspired by illustrations in children’s books? We have some new babies/toddlers in my life, and I have the idea to make some quilts from books and gift them along with the books. I know I’m not the first person to think this, but I’m having a hard time finding examples of quilts from books and not quilts inspired by them if you know what I mean. I have some in mind, but I’m limited to the books in my child’s library, so I’m wondering if anyone else knows of any!

Hi! First timer here. My aunt gave me an old project of hers and I’m unsure how to finish it. I have two of these big panels of sewn together squares. Do I see them together i.e. one blanket of squares on both sides? Do I make two quilts out of them? It’s a pretty lightweight fabric and is a bit see through (second photo) so I’m not sure if I need to sew a backing on them first or if it’s fine…any help is greatly appreciated!!! Sorry if this is a stupid question!!

Just discovered FPP, made some things I liked and then figured out how to put them together! Just found out that I did not in fact buy the same background fabric color when I ran out, and yes a heart is upside down, but that's life. It's about 50"x60", but only in some places tbh. Quilted on my regular machine with the same thread on the back but different color threads on top.

Having devoted nearly three years to the noble art of quilting, I find myself compelled to inquire about a most curious tradition. Pray, does anyone know why quilt kits so often arrive without the backing fabric?

One would imagine that a "kit" would contain every essential required to complete the masterpiece. And yet, when the time comes to finish one's quilt, one discovers the backing must be procured elsewhere.

Quite the scandal, is it not?

I should be delighted if someone could enlighten me on this peculiar custom.

Fresh off the laundry line and ready to share! This one is for my brother, a cryptid fan living in the PNW. I found a panel from the Legends of the National Parks series that fit him to a T, but had to improvise wildly to figure out how to use it. Improvising my second quilt was not a smart idea, but I did learn from it.

The first step was to chop the inspirational text off the panels. Then I figured that the right kind of sashing would work for a photo shadowbox look. I decided on the sashing widths purely by vibes. Then I spent a very long time trying to find a pattern for pine trees that didn't look "too Christmas-y." There are so many Christmas tree patterns out there, you guys. SO MANY.

I settled on Woodlot 2.0 by Patti's Patchwork and discovered that it pieces the trees in rows by tier, not as individual trees. So I picked a 3x4 rectangle purely by vibes again. The good news is that the block size miraculously lined up. The bad news is that when you just cut templates until your heart says to stop, you end up with a massive pile of radioactive green leftovers.

Overall this turned out way better than it had any right to. My seam allowances were an unholy mess, but I only spotted a couple places where they actually burst. (What's the best way to patch those, btw?)

Scraps are taking over my sewing room. It's time to either get rid of some fabric or make numerous scrap quilts.

Question about scrap quilts: do they look ok with primary colors mixed with softer colors? How about solids mixed with busy fabrics? All of the above mixed together ?

Hello! I just wanted to share my newest WIP. I'm making a round bag for my beach tent after mice chewed up the plastic one, and I'm making one side entirely out of scrap fabric, improv log cabin squares. This is my first time attempting to quilt without a pattern so wish me luck!

After hand quilting my last one, I figured I would try hand piecing since my machine drives me up the wall and I like embroidery. It is seriously so fun, I want to keep doing hand piecing at least for a while :) my daughter wanted a butterfly quilt so a butterfly quilt she will get. It’s not perfect, which is fine with me because I am practicing and I love it.

My little I spy quilt is pretty darn square. I’m considering not pre measuring the border before adding. Just doing top, bottom - trim to size and then doing the sides. I’ve cut my border fabric against the grain lengthwise so it has minimal stretch. Anyone else living (sewing) dangerously?

This is probably a long shot, but I'm desperately looking for fabric from the Ruby Star Society Reading Nook line, that was released in 2023.

I have two 5 inch charm packs of it, but need a third. Yardage would work too. I'm particularly hoping to find some of the Meow Meow (cats) and Library (cats on bookshelves) prints.

I spent way too many hours searching online anyway I could think of, and scouring Etsy, but Reading Nook seems to be sold out everywhere, except for a few of the floral prints. And one mini charm pack on Etsy for $35 😵‍💫

If anyone has any in their stash they want to sell, I'd be very grateful!

I have a small stash at home but am planning a new project and am totally paralyzed about the thought of buying new fabric.

There are a couple of fabric stores that aren’t terribly far away, and then there’s a Michael’s and a Hobby Lobby… the only place I’ve bought fabric in person was hobby lobby bc there was actually someone there available to cut the fabric I wanted. Michael’s never has anyone working in the fabric section and their selection sucks. And I’m a little nervous about going to an actual fabric store. Idk why…. Maybe just fear of the unknown…? Not totally sure, but having a hard time motivating myself to check one out (even though I’m sure it would be a wonderland of options… sigh).

I’m also completely at a loss shopping on Etsy where I’ve ordered fabrics before because it’s SO hard to tell what the actual colors look like from the images online, which has backfired in the past.

So… where do you buy fabric from? Should I just suck it up and get brave and go to the actual fabric store?? Buy a swatch so I can choose from home and then order correctly? 🫠

Please help a sister out. Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

My wife’s Baby Lock Regalia won’t initialize and communicate with the carriage when turning on. She has replaced the tablet, updated the software on the tablet and the carriage, changed the data cables, uninstalled and reinstalled everything after turning everything off and unplugging it for an hour, everything…

This started after we moved her stuff into a new room 2x as big but apparently it had been acting wonky before. Have had repair guy out once with two more no-shows for the same guy and from hearing her tell me what he tells her, I doubt he’s got a clue as to what to do.

She took matters into her own hands over the past weekend and the first time she installed the same system on the tablet and carriage, it found the motors and fired right up. She did two quilts, turned it on and off between each one…no issues…and then we were supposed to have severe weather so she turned it off and unplugged it. When she plugged it back in…it’s a brick. The tablet works fine. It has the right software. It says the carriage has the right software. It connotative the motors.

Is there a closet Baby Lock technician on this subreddit that has heard of this before and has any answers? This is making her very crabby….

My Stained Glass Squares Quilt (70.5cm x 113.5cm). Cotton, Linen, and Harris Tweed Wool. No Batting, No Backing.

I have scraps from a backing that was flannel that I’m gonna have to create a quilt around because I have so much left over. Last time I used flannel and a quilt I wasn’t starching things am I starching this time? Honestly, I’ve been avoiding flannel for years.

My third quilt, back from the longarmer and bound! (I'll show off quilt #2 tomorrow, it had some dicey seams I don't trust in the dryer.) This one's for my sister, who is a librarian.

You can't really tell from these pictures but the white fabric is a woven with a subtle grain to it that looks kind of like pages.

The backing doesn't match at all, but my sister wanted green and I didn't think the front had enough of it. The fabric looked less yellow online, and it reminded me of the marbled endpapers of a hardcover book. Tragically, I didn't find the also-marbled-but-matchier binding fabric until after the backing was on.
