Food Bar of Chocolate

I saw they recently changed ownership and am curious if anyone has been in and what changes have been made? I always liked going there because it was affordable and nothing has ever been updated so it felt like a slice of old Portland to me. Is it all 18 dollar cocktails now?

Community Discussion I'm really starting to feel like Uber is dying in Portland

So I drive for 207 and way more now than ever before, like over the past 6 months even, we're rescuing people stranded by Uber. Especially overnight/early morning. Easily I get 3-6 calls every shift and they are all the same. "I've been waiting 2 hours", "drivers keep cancelling", "I'm gonna miss my flight".

I'm always happy to explain. Uber is not a transportation company; they are just an app and payment processor. They do no scheduling of drivers; they do nothing to ensure any kind of coverage; there's no discipline for drivers rejecting every ride offered. They're blatently ignoring Portland taxi code. You can illegally buy an Uber account and hit the road minutes later; these drivers are unlicensed, uninsured, and wholly unfamiliar with our city, and Uber seems to be doing nothing to crack down. Well, why would they... They're taking 60-85% of every fare. It's a cash grab.

I speak not as a company representative but as a community member, redditor, and born native of Portland: save your time, your headache, Uber is worse than gypsy cabs. Traditional taxi is still here - never left - 24/7 and we will always answer, always show up, and never surge the price. Uber barged greedily into the market, never tried to do anything right, and ultimately it's Mainers who are suffering. It hurts my heart, so this is an open letter and plea to please stop supporting them.

Adult acting classes in Portland or nearby?

Google is not pulling anything up. Are there any acting classes in Portland/ southern Maine for adults? Stage or screen focus is fine. I’ve found Acorn productions for one-off workshops but really looking for something at least once weekly.

30F looking for a roommate (October 1st)

Hi everyone! I'm 30 and looking for a roommate (or roommates). Ideally, I'd love to find someone to search for a place with for an October 1st move-in, but I'm also open to moving into an available room if it's the right fit. I could move a little earlier than October if everything lines up.
A little about me:
• I work in insurance and work from home most days.
• I like shared spaces to stay reasonably clean, but I'm not super particular about everything being perfect all the time.
• I like having friends over for wine and movie nights about 1–2 times a week.
• It would be great to find a roommate who's up for walks, grabbing a drink after work, or hanging out sometimes, but I'm happy to let whatever friendship develops happen naturally.
• I don't really smoke weed except once in a blue moon, but I have no problem living with someone who does as long as they're respectful.
• LGBTQIA+ friendly is a must.
I'm looking primarily in Portland and South Portland, but I'm open to expanding the search for the right person and place.
I don't own much furniture or kitchen stuff yet, so if we're starting from scratch together, I'm totally happy to build up an apartment over time and buy what we need.
My non-negotiables are laundry in the building or unit and off-street parking, or street parking that's easy enough that snow bans won't be a major issue.
I also have a very spicy orange cat who unfortunately needs to be an only pet. I'd prefer someone who's lived with a cat before since they'll understand the occasional orange cat chaos, but it's definitely not a requirement.
I'm ideally looking for someone around 26–32 years old, though that's flexible if we seem like a good fit.
My hard budget is $1,400/month total, including rent, utilities, and any other housing costs.
If you think we'd be a good match or you're also looking for a roommate, send me a message! I'd love to chat.

Politics To the 3 people in Monument Square yelling pro-ICE rhetoric through a megaphone:

Last week, hundreds of people gathered in the same spot to protest ICE. Meanwhile, you guys brought an overpriced speaker, a RHCP playlist & a megaphone to a mostly deserted park that's drenched in rain. Standing in the rain, annoying people walking by and waving a flag for a president who doesn't know you exist isn't the checkmate you think it is. I guess if y'all wanna be the village idiots for the day, be my guest. I ain't even annoyed anymore. This is just sad to see.

Mekong Asian Bistro

Does anyone know what is going on with Mekong Asian Bistro? They had a sign saying they were doing renovations and now it looks like the renovations are done and their website says they are open, but they are not accepting online orders and their phone doesn't seem to work!

Looking for Referral Sunflower Vendors?

Hi neighbors! Does anyone have a recommendation for a good place to buy bouquets of sunflowers? I’m hoping to get 40 to 50 stems. Not trying to pay an arm and a leg for small bundles at the grocery store.

Photo 🚨 LOST CAT: LUNA 🚨

Our indoor cat Luna escaped through a window screen last night (Sunday, July 19). We are desperate to find her!

Location: Washington Ave & Canco Rd area

Appearance: green eyes, black shorthair with thin fur on her hind legs and the top of her tail (due to anxiety over-grooming).

Collar: wearing a collar with an ID tag and phone number.

Behavior: Very anxious, shy, and likely hiding.

🐾 What You Can Do:
If you live in the area, please check your porches, garages, sheds, and under decks. If you spot her, please do not chase her as she scares easily.

Please DM or call the number on her tag immediately with any sightings!

This is a baby seagull that cannot yet fly and fell out of their nest near Tommy’s park. Ive been watching him for the last few days If you see this little buddy in the road or in a dangerous situation he cannot fly. (Do not pick him up or touch him, just guide him to wherever he’s trying to go and out of danger) i really just love this bird so much please help me protect them until they can fly:)

EDIT: they are supposed to be on the ground at this age, just watch out for him and do not feed him plz:)

(Little boat for scale🤏🏻⛵️) I was in awe riding my bike and looking at this sleek beauty docked. I wonder how many stories tall that mast is. Does anyone know more about who owns it or what it’s called? It looks fancy.

Eyanson, 21, just had his best start of the season: 5 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts against Somerset. He's been dominant all July, a 1.80 ERA with 15 strikeouts against 2 walks in two starts. He also entered this year's Futures Game in the fourth and got the win for the AL. Fastball's touching 100 now. Full breakdown on him in this week's Double Dip.

Hello folks,

I'm one of the members of the board at Kinonik, Portland's own non-profit archival microcinema. We've just started our summer film series which will continue all the way through until the end of September. We're nearing completion of our brand new booth to house our two 35mm projectors which means we'll soon be able to add 35mm prints to our schedule of "always on film" presentations!

Screenings are held every Wednesday at 7 PM and Saturday at both 2 and 7 PM at our Cassidy Point location. The schedule is posted below and tickets are available at the attached link. We hope you'll join us!
