Meta Welcome to /r/Parahumans

/r/Parahumans is the subreddit for the writing of J.C. McCrae (Also John McCrae) who more typically goes by the online handle 'Wildbow'. The writing is in the online serial format, which means it is written over time, chapter by chapter, on a set schedule. Comparisons can be made to webcomics, but the stories take the form of text, not comics. Chapters appear between midnight and 7am on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with some chapters released on Thursdays if and when there's enough crowdfunded money- typically once every two weeks.

The works include:

  • Worm - A teenage girl with an unconventional superpower seeks escape from an unhappy and frustrated life at home and at school by pursuing life as a costumed crimefighter. Her first attempt at taking down a supervillain sees her mistaken for one, thrusting her into the midst of the local ‘cape’ scene’s politics, unwritten rules, and ambiguous morals. The story is an epic in the older sense of the word, not a poem, but in terms of scale and length and the heroic journey. Currently the most popular of the works. Worm is read here. Fans also put together an unofficial audiobook here.

  • Pact - A young man inherits his grandmother's coveted estate, but in the process, he also inherits her trove of diabolic tomes and all of the enemies that come with dabbling in such things. Modern supernatural genre, comparisons can be made to Dresden Files and the like. Pact is roughly half the length of Worm, which still makes it fairly lengthy. Pact is found here.

  • Twig - Set in the early 1900s, Twig follows a group of child investigators of an unusual bent in a world where the science of biology runs rampant. A century ago, a genius unraveled the mysteries of life and biology, creating the first 'stitched' and biological horrors. Unlike his peers in similar literature (Frankenstein, Moreau), he was conscripted by the Crown, who took it to an extreme. The genre is a tentative 'biopunk' label, and the story spans a longer stretch of years, following the youths as they grow up. Twig can be found here.

  • Ward - The sequel to Worm. It can be found here. Some Worm spoilers follow: After the end of the world, society is picking up the pieces. The old Earth is lost, and superheroes are running the new one, in a sprawling, dense city that spills across alternate Earths. Old traumas sit close to the surface, and a group of young heroes who are wrestling with these traumas and their own complicated relationships with their powers are looking to get their start.

  • Pale - A Pactverse story, set in the same world as Pact, but divorced from it. Three teenage girls are offered magic and magical gifts, if they'll represent their small ski town as its local practitioners and at least pretend to help solve a murder, so outsiders don't start poking their heads in. The catch is that the offer was extended by the local monsters, and the murder victim was the bloody pseudo-god that oversaw magic for the region. It can be found here

  • Claw - The Hursts specialize in extracting criminals and giving them a second chance, with new identities. That extraction is only a side mission to Mia Hurst's real objective, which ties into family, and their kids. Claw is a short serial at only six arcs, and is best pegged as an action/thriller.

  • Seek - We follow three storylines through different times and places in a solar system where warp travel has been used to bring distant planetary bodies home, with the eventual plan of a ringworld. But even when there's no longer resource scarcity, other pressures and issues raise issues of identity and purpose, and in the third, most distant timeline, it's clear something's gone wrong. The question remains: what happened? Ongoing.

The works are each broken up into 'arcs', with each arc being comparable to a book or novella, covering a specific, meaningful stretch of storyline. Each arc contains six to twenty chapters; between arcs (and sometimes in the midst of them), there are interlude chapters (or 'pages', or 'enemy' chapters) - told from different points of view or in different formats.

Beyond that, the works are in the serial format, and that means that they're a little bit rougher than one would get from a formally published work. Worm in particular, being the first real project by the author, definitely starts off rough. Some works & parts of works do also have rougher patches, as a consequence of the fact that they were written day-by-day, and sometimes the author had bad days (or months). Such is life.

On the upside, the stories are expansive, and there's something fantastic to be said for a massive binge or for following week by week alongside a fantastic and involved community.

On the Subject of the Subreddit: Removed/Missing posts & Rules

If your posts aren't appearing and you have a new or very low-karma account, please reach out to the moderators via. mod mail in the sidebar. We automatically screen out these posts to keep the porn bots at bay.

We discourage and are likely to remove:

Shitposts - any deliberately low-effort, low-humor post intending to get attention. 'Shitposts' (as the slang goes) are generally slapped-together work/text with a 'I don't give a shit about what I'm posting' attitude behind them. It's often making noise to make noise, or attempts at putting in the least work possible to get the most upvotes/reaction for that minimal work. Generally the defining trait of a shitpost is the implied intent behind it.

  • Examples would include any clearly MS paint art (ignoring the highest quality, can't-tell-it's-MS-paint stuff), derivative memes from elsewhere (Spoiler warning! | Examples: the trolley problem variants, the enlightened brain thing, Who would win, chad vs. incel ) One liner jokes we've probably heard before don't generally offer much discussion, and random sentences ("I just realized Skitter is a badass") count as 'making noise'.

  • Short questions are not shitposts, though more context and initial thoughts would be very much preferred - they tend to generate some discussion and feedback. Posts from people who just finished aren't shitposts (again, would prefer more thoughts) - they generate some discussion and also double as welcome posts. These are excluded from the shitpost rule. Please do not report them.

Random reference posts - We get an abundance of posts that link images with scarce reference to the source material, or link articles. These tend to be clutter, they don't generate discussion, and chance are we've seen them before.

  • Posts with text that refers back to the story are fine and aren't random (That is, quoting a passage for discussion isn't a 'reference' post.

  • Things that refer to story events or characters and that can lead to discussion are fine.

  • Outside material and/or fanart that actually involves Worm (like the Slay the Spire reference) is great.

  • The problem posts: A picture of a tree ornament that makes you think of Evan in Pact, a picture of a spider you found on the web, a wooden statue that makes you think of a character, or red flowers that you saw that made you think of Twig, they aren't fine and have probably been posted before.

  • Images are more of a problem than text, but text that has people scratching their heads as to what it means or refers to would fall under this heading. The science articles that refer to spider silk or goats producing spider silk are things we've seen posted (and removed) a hundred times. Do not post them.

Banned subjects - The following things are not okay to post:

  • Earth Aleph (our earth) Politics - too divisive.

  • Racism, sexism, pedophilia, etc - This isn't the place for you to tout redpill stances, how a given race is intrinsically more criminal, or how a given character asked for it because of how they presented themselves. These things may be discussed strictly in light of the characters and the work, in a careful and respectful manner, where relevant (E88). That said, I don't want this to be a platform for excusing messed up beliefs. Report problematic posts and if the mods don't act within 24 hours, please reach out to us directly.

  • Encouraging harm & violence - No posts that encourage or tacitly encourage harm or self-harm ("eat tide pods" memes & "an hero" memes included), no threatening harm against other posters, Wildbow, or real-world people (or politicians).

Repeated postings of these things may lead to warnings and/or bans, temporary or otherwise.

Finish this Cluster?

Building a cluster cape as an NPC for a tabletop thing and I've having issues building out the rest of her Clustermates. Also wanted to see if the powers were appropriately weak for cluster 2ndary powers.

Her Powers:

- 1 [Primary]: Teleports small objects into close proximity of a target, inheriting their momentum. Effectively turns any thrown object into a deadly long range hitscan weapon

- 2: Slow transformation (1min) into a whisp of energy that can float at walking speed in any direction. Effect ends when hit.

-3: Touch based time delayed slowing effect on small objects, making them durable and extra sharp (throw forward a cup of water and it frezes in mid air as razor sharp droplets, or cause a smoke grenade to become a physical barrier). Effect ends after 30 sec or if the object takes enough damage

- 4: Able to lock users location in relation to an object that has substantially more mass

- 5: Able to hear through the ears of a single animal she has spent a significant amount of time with while that animal is within a 10 mile radius of the user.

What would be good powers for her clustermates? Also bonus if you have ideas for their collective trigger.

Thank you!

It could be a movie, TV Show, Cartoon, anything! I would probably get Dana Terrace for an animated adaptation. If you look her up, her body horror art is great and I personally love it.

Worm Spoilers [All] Butcher actually sucks Spoiler

There's so many Butcher fics and a lot of them give the Butcher different but similar powers but the main reoccurring thing is, all the powers are severely washed out from their original.

Like, the pain blast and rage aura are strong but still counterable. Quarrel's power is actually crazy when combined with the mini-gun but the Butcher just gives her a small Brute boost to use the heavier weapon.

The ONLY thing that makes the Butcher so terrifying is the inherited personalities. If someone just got the powers and ability packets and none of the memory or personality, yeah, they'd be strong, but they wouldn't be as much of a big deal. It's like reverse One For All.

Wildbow What’s wildbows best opening line?

My pick is Pact’s “Damn me, damn them, damn it all” I think it’s a perfect encapsulation of Pact’s themes.

I see it as representing Blake’s approach to fixing the unfair systems in pact. He resorts to hurting himself(damn me) or targeting the people who perpetuate the system, like the Duchamp husbands(damn them all). It’s repeated two more times during Pact, when Blake is losing his humanity.

It’s repeated one more time at the end of the book (rule of three) when the lines between the families have dissolved and everyone is working together, but it’s said by Rose after she’s absorbed the last of Blake’s humanity, and she removes the first two parts, she says “damn it, damn it, damn it” showing Rose’s less destructive approach to changing the system and bookending the story.

Community If the books were printed physically, how would you want them split up?

Say we get physical copies of Worm, Ward, Pact, Pale, Twig, etc, ideally how would people like the books split up?

One big book for the entire story?

Broken up by the various sections?

Or broken up by larger narrative arcs?

Im about to start Pale. Ive read worm and ward before. Ive seen online that there are supplementary stuff? Are these required reading or will I be ok just reading the story?

What if worm had more Filler (and by filler i mean more low stakes character building)

disclaimer: this isn't to say worm doesn't have low stakes character building moments. Taylor bonding with rachel at the dog pound, gru and imp fitting their apartment.

One of worms greatest strength's is that it's a page tuner. there's always some dramatic event you always want to know how it's going to play out or resolve. yet ironically part of me wishes it could sometimes slow down.

I really wish we got to spend more time with the undersides just hanging out.

i know ward attempts to write this story and while ward is more focused on it's central group of breakthrough i never really got a good grasp on the group dynamics/chemistry of breakthrough.

Ward Spoilers [All] What power would manifest out of a months long harassment/smear campaign? Spoiler

Hello! I hope that this is fine to post here. I'm working on a character and i'm a little out of ideas.

This character is a niche performer (think, theatre and/or drag) who has had a smear piece written on them, leading to a harassment campaign. The harassment they received has a lot to do with their identity & looks, i'm sort of thinking they garnered the attention of nazis/empire since they're black and visibly androgynous. They triggered after a riot + capes crashed the theatre they were performing in (Not specifically for them, but they were a part of it) (Also culminated in a cluster-trigger, but that's another unrelated thing i'm thinking about).

My main idea was a bio-tinker that only works on themself (with a slight trump aspect?), but I don't think there is much irony to this. Or some sort of stranger power that convinces other people that they are a different person no matter how out of character their actions are (reasoning for this being, they were wishing that they were someone else while this has been happening).

Not necessary info but their cluster-mates are a shaker/stranger/trump, and i don't particularly like having two strangers in this cluster

Who’s The Most Evil Character in Worm?

Post image
240 Upvotes

Worm is among my Favorite Pieces of Fiction! And Worm has a lot of Heroes and Villains of course! But even in this Dark World! There got to be True Monsters that even The Villains Themselves Hate! And because of that who’s The Single Most Evil Character in Worm and why? What separates he or she from other Villains! And makes them Monstrous even amongst Villains! List me these characters and what they did in comparison because even amongst Full Blown Supervillains and Mass Murders there’s got to be a couple that stand out! And what makes them truly evil and Why? All in all what do you think? Let me know in the comments

Finally enjoying Pact

I tried to read it around a decade ago when it first started coming out. Absolutely no interest in it. Couldn't even make it through the first couple chapters. But I recently lost my job and have hit that point of so much free time I run out of things to do so I decided to give it another attempt.

Absolutely loving it so far. I don't know what changed, but it just clicked this time. I'm not very far in. Blake has JUST awakened. Already loving how the magic system appears to be set up and play out.

Sorry if this counts as low effort. But I know this community is ravenous about getting others into it so thought I'd let you know I'm starting on the journey through Pact.

Worm Spoilers [All] “These are the people I’ve been associating with?” Yes, they are and I love them so much and so do you. [WORM FANART] Arc 1-8 Undersiders

Post image
167 Upvotes

On this day, one year ago, I was drawn into this story where I subsequently fell in love with Worm. Though I liked the sequel, Ward better, and I read/listened to Pact and am absolutely loving reading Pale after my 3rd Worm and 2nd Ward reread; I haven’t been able to go a day without thinking about Parahumans. I used to doodle in class and at home, I’m not studying art, but I’ll watch a video here or there and I’ve got 30,000 photos and videos saved to my phone that I tell myself I’ll totally use for reference someday. That being said, I haven’t scribbled anything since March of 2025, I was designing my own superheroes but I was in a bit of a rut. So, when I read these serials and got hit with inspiration after looking at the subreddit and fanart and seeing that nothing quite came close to what I saw in my mind, I figured there’d be merit in doodling Worm. I finished these scribbles of the Arcs 1-8 Undersiders back on May 7th but I didn’t make this account until the 15th anniversary because I wanted this to be for specifically Parahuman/Wildbow posts so I didn’t understand Reddit or have enough karma to post until now. I did my best to strictly adhere to canon and WoG, if there are any discrepancies/issues/questions about design choices, PLEASE, let me know.

Here’s my thoughts and the general process I went through when designing each character. This turned into a goddamned mini-essay and I think my account for the Wards will be longer, so read at your own discretion.

I initially did some design doodles for Skitter, sketching out her armor, mask, hair and tools before I doodled the Undersiders proper. I feel the need to draw my ideas out on paper because I’m a primarily visual “imaginator” but the more I try to remember, the less I do, so I HAVE to draw these characters or else I’ll flanderize their design and lose them forever.

(Edit: crap, I forgot to list everyone’s height.
Bitch is 5’7, Grue is 6’1, Skitter is 5’7, Tattletale is 5’8 and Regent is 5’5. In centimeters that’s 171 cm for Bitch, 187 cm for Grue, 170 cm for Skitter, 173 cm for Tattletale and 166 cm for Regent. The doodle is at 1/12th scale as well.)

I started on the far right (because I’m left handed) with Alec and Lisa, I doodled them in about an hour and a half total, they were pretty easy to get down even with my weak points being everything. I looked at some reference photos for Alec’s hair, mask and shirt, and Lisa’s buckle and boots, then drew everything else based on how I saw them in my head. Does the Tattler look young enough while still looking like a 17 year old? Like, in that middle stage between child and adult. There’s no canon heights listed for anyone aside from a few characters so I based Tattletale off of Taylor’s height with the fact that Taylor has noticeably grown from Arc 10 - Arc 20, with her height being listed as 5’9 in 25.1 and 5’10 in 26.2; in WoG she’s listed as 5’7-5’8, 1 inch of height change wouldn’t be all that noticeable so I put Taylor at 5’7 and Lisa at 5’8, so that she’d still be taller than Taylor as described in 2.7 and 27.1. I think it’s Taylor that’s really fucking bad at guesstimating heights like with Brian in 2.6 and more as we’ll get to some other characters later on that have WoG confirmed heights/ranges that differ wildly from what Taylor states. Could chalk it up to early installment weirdness like with Taylor stating in 3.4 that her baton is 21 inches long and in 3.11 she states that it’s 18 inches.

Drawing Skitter was probably the most thorough design I had to think about (which pales in comparison to my process for the Wards) and I’m still not sure how to do her armor on the lumbar section of her back. Skitter’s eyes are a little far apart, that’s my bad but I didn’t want to erase and redraw the eyes because I’m terrible at keeping them symmetrical. In almost all fanart, the armor on her mask is only accounted for in the mandible section on her jaw but multiple times it’s stated that the armor is on the sides of her forehead above the eyes as well. In 8.5 the text states “I’d built the armor of my mask around the edges of the goggles so the actual nature of the lenses wasn’t immediately apparent, and to hold them firmly in place”. I could go on with more examples such as 3.8, 3.10, 5.7, 8.7 and 13.9, it’s like being told a ladybug is red with black polka dots but in every piece of visual media it’s just plain red, it bugs me (haha). It was a bit of a coincidence or maybe intentional on Wildbow’s part that the mask armor ended up looking like the silhouette of an ant or arachnid’s body, It wasn’t intentional on my part, but I found it to be quite cool. I did my best to make Taylor look as skinny as possible while still being believable, but I’m not very objective until I take a picture and look at it, I think I got everyone’s body types accurately, but I can’t be 100% sure. With Skitter’s design being as complex and thought out as it was, I took extra time thinking about the armor as well as taking into account every detail about it (like I said, I’m still unsure about the lower back armor). I was watching Bloodhounds on Netflix and when Yang-Jung catches up to a dude and cuts his Achilles tendons I was like “ooh that’s scary, I would not want that to happen to me” and I thought that Taylor might not want that to happen to her either so I changed the greaves design to encompass the whole lower leg rather than just the shin which I think makes for a cleaner, more consistent design. She wears her costume under her clothes so there’s obviously no hand armor or foot armor or she wouldn’t be able to look inconspicuous or wear shoes over it.

Brian and Rachel were a breeze, after procrastinating on Taylor for so long and finally reaching a point I was able to just keep doodling without overthinking, I still spent hours perusing the text, wiki, and google to get their looks down. I googled motorcycle leathers and found pictures that looked good enough for what I wanted and googled what a black skull would look like to make sure I got the lighting down good enough. I debated adding Rachel’s dogs because I’ve never drawn dogs before and I don’t know dog breeds, but Brutus, Judas and Angelica are part of the team for Arcs 1-8. I googled and traced the outlines of stock images for the dogs and then filled in the detail as best I could. Rachel is the only one without a mask so I couldn’t cheat my way around drawing her face, I made sure to capture that her nose had been broken multiple times and that she “wasn’t attractive” without making her look like a caricature; I hope I was able to make her look “ugly” while still looking like a burly teenage girl. I never realized that Angelica was that small, I subconsciously filled in that she was like a pitbull terrier because that kind of matched the aesthetic of a mean, bad ass dog and I imagined Brutus was a really big bulldog for whatever reason.

I want to draw all of the capes we see in the first 8 or so Arcs, so I’ll at least draw the Travelers, ABB, E88, the Triumvirate, New Wave, top Protectorate Heroes, and the Endbringers. Even though there is fanart for all of these aforementioned characters, they still don’t quite match the images I have in my head so I feel like scribbling out those ideas is still worthwhile. I love seeing everyone’s interpretations of different characters however and I wish there were infinite artists in the community. I’ve got the Wards nearly finished and design language mostly finalized for both the Wards and Protectorate with ideas for what the adult heroes will look like. I’m not sticking to a schedule at all, this is mostly practice so don’t expect steady output of “content” or anything like that, I’ll post whenever I finish my doodles.

Please give criticism, just tear me apart, even if you say “This looks like shit!” I’ll yell “THANK YOU!”, any way I can improve is welcome!

Worm is to The Illiad what Ward is to The Odyssey.

I read the entirety of the Illiad in high-school for fun. I was introduced to the absolute badass that is Diomedes and it's a crying shame he isn't spoken about at all when it is my belief that he did more than Ajax, a guy people have heard of. SHAME ON CULTURAL MEMORY!!! SHAME!!!

Anyway, I read that, but I just couldn't go on to The Odyssey. I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't.

Same with Worm. I read the entirety of Worm in 2 weeks (I was fucking OBSESSED). However, I just couldn't bring myself to read Ward. I also tried, but I couldn't.

That's it. My mini-rant done. And once again, WHERE'S THE RESPECT FOR MY BOY DIOMEDES?!?!

Ward Spoilers [All] Just started Ward, anyway to get this off the screen? Spoiler

The table of contents goes for quite a while, and it's been quite distracting (and maybe spoilers? Some chapter names seem kinda revealing?). I've settled with either putting a piece of paper over the right of my screen, or zooming in a bunch, but both are pretty annoying. Is there any simple and not ugly way to get rid of the table of contents on the side of the screen, or am I doomed to read ward with a scrap of paper over the side of my screen? Thank you for any help given.
