About 9 months ago, we found a tiny orange kitten hiding underneath a storage container at a school. Mom and siblings were nowhere to be found. He was only about 3 weeks old, so we brought him home and started bottle-feeding him kitten formula.

Apparently, kitten formula did not agree with him. For about a week, he sharted all over himself at least twice a day. And I’m not exaggerating when I say it made an audible shart sound every single time.

I texted my parents one night, “I’m going to call him Shart from now on.” It was supposed to be a joke…the joke never ended.

The name just stuck. He actually responded to Shart. If I wanted him to come running, I literally had to yell, “SHART!” across the house. Calling him anything else felt wrong.

His legal name at the vet is Cheeto, because I couldn’t bring myself to tell the receptionist, “I’m here for Shart’s appointment.”

But let’s be honest, this cat is not Cheeto. He’s Shart!

I then made a post on r/OneOrangeBraincell, telling the same story I told above, and the post blew up, with almost 2 million views. This community fell in love with Shart.

When Shart was around 5 months old, something happened that almost changed everything. On easter morning, during all of the family chaos, Shart got out and got into a neighbor’s yard. He was attacked by two dogs and suffered life-threatening injuries. My dad had to pry him out of a German Shepard’s mouth. The vet told us his injuries may be too severe to his lungs and he would not be able to heal, so all we would be able to do was keep him comfortable for the remaining few hours of his life. We just had to wait and see. I was devastated. I was doing my best to accept that his life was over, and that I would only be able to spend a few more hours with him. After spending the entire day at the emergency vet, we got the news that his lungs were okay, and his injuries could be fixed with emergency surgery.

He suffered a strained back leg, a broken jaw and nose, and he had a hole punctured through the roof of his mouth into his nasal cavity, from where the dog had clamped down onto his head.

Out of desperation, I made a post on r/OneOrangeBraincell and started a GoFundMe, thinking I would raise MAYBE a couple hundred dollars.

I never expected what happened next.

Hundreds of complete strangers came together to help save this little orange fuzz ball. People donated, shared his story, and left some of the kindest and most supportive messages ever. Because of this community, Shart was able to get the treatment he needed and make a full recovery.

I genuinely don’t know if he’d still be here without all of you. I’ll never be able to thank the r/OneOrangeBraincell community enough for giving him a second chance. If you are reading this, and you donated, or left Shart and I a kind message, I cannot thank you enough.

we adopted her from a shelter a few weeks ago!!

we call her a pocket lint because she seems so unaware of everything lol. she loves her 3 cat siblings and, after some cuddle sessions, she also enjoys the company of her dog brother
