A small citizen-science fish-ID game built from real UK seabed monitoring footage

Sharing something we built at a small UK marine non-profit. We monitor seabed life at seaweed and shellfish farms, and wanted the public involved in the species ID rather than it all sitting on our laptops.

It's a short-clip guessing game. You watch a clip, name the species, and the crowd's answers build a consensus that feeds back into validating our own reference IDs. Playable as a guest, no download, and we will send you a copy of UK marine species ID guide for committed contributers.

It's free and non-commercial. I'd really value feedback from people who think about crowd-sourced data, especially where you reckon the consensus model might fall over.

Was walking the shore of Chatham, Massachusetts when a friend and I came across this almost translucent, jelly-like or membranous object that when touching zapped the tiniest bit almost like if you press those shock pens very lightly. It seemed to have small individual organisms inside of it but I got no clue what this is.

Any ideas?

If sharks don't see humans as prey, can you explain the Vana Pierri incident?

A girl and a boy went swimming and suddenly a white shark started circling the girl and attacked her. Went to the guy traumatized him and then went back to eat the remains of the girl.

In my understanding the best way to explain sharks is that they are opportunistic. That given the chance, they will eat you. And the whole you look like a seal, investigatory bites is just bullshit.

not found in an ocean (the Adriatic sea actually) but I thought here would be the best place to ask - does anybody know what that was?

google images suggest Maja squinado which look almost identical except our finding is a bit more narrow and has two symmetrical cavities which we didn't observe when researching the maja squinado crab. We keep on thinking about it and would very much appreciate some advice

I was walking on a very remote beach here in Greece And I saw this in the sand on the shore,it’s roughly the size of a soccer ball. the top is very hardened. And the bottom is almost like silicone texture. The black part sounds kind of hollow. Please help me identify it

Marine lego

Hey all, pretty sure this post follows the rules but not too sure as it's for a lego ideas set so I'm sorry if it's breaking the rules

I'm posting here because I'm hoping to gather some support for my boyfriends lego ideas set.. it's really cool honestly... I'm not biased I swear.. it's a set that features a humpback whale, whale shark and sperm whale.. it also has a red giant Squid, a gulper eel (his fav animal) and many more

He hopes that if this set is approved it can be used to teach conservation and give people a love for marine animals... he's honestly such a nerd for sea life he'll just know the most random facts of jellyfish or octopuses? Octopie?

Please If you have the time consider making an account to hopefully get this turned into a real set

THANKS SO MUCH... MWAH 🤗

Frivolous question, feel free to roll eyes and scroll on by

I'm carving a whale out of wood. At first I was aiming to have it look like a sperm whale and then started aiming for a gray whale. At this point I have the general shape for a gray whale wrong. I may still put the "knuckles" on the tail but does this look potentially like any particular sort of whale? Understand that it's far from done. I realize I have a bulge for the eye on the top of the head and can nary a kind of whale other than a cartoon one that has that, so those will go in favor of eyes down by the mouth, for instance. Thanks!

Photo and Video I created an infographic about the little-known Louvar!

Post image

This is one that I really hoped to see during my brief fisheries observer days, but they’re very rare so it wasn’t in the cards for me sadly. They’re a super cool fish, very strange-looking gelatinovores!

Their internalized, red muscle is similar to that of other pelagic fish like tuna who are regional endotherms. But, they lack a rete mirabile, which is a network of veins and arteries that function as a counter-current heat exchange system. Researchers hypothesize that either 1) the internalized red muscle evolved before the species emerged, indicating no further evolution of this trait, 2) the species is in the middle of an “evolutionary thrust” which may eventually lead to endothermy, or 3) louvar may simply not be able to evolve endothermy any further due to adaptive trade-offs.

Regarding the second hypothesis - the most recent common ancestor of the tuna emerged 40 million years ago, while louvar experienced little structural change between the early Eocene (~59.2 Mya) and the late Paleocene (~47.8 Mya), so it would be a very slow evolutionary thrust.

On the third hypothesis, endothermy has a higher metabolic cost than endothermy. Since the louvar’s diet is made up of low-calorie, slow-moving gelatinous plankton, there may not be an advantage for the species to develop regional endothermy. Pelagic species with regional endothermy tend to be high-speed, caudal-propelled predators.

There is not a large amount of existing research about this fish. Additionally, no fishery targets them, so it is difficult to collect fisheries-dependent data and samples/specimens. Hopefully, we will continue to learn more about this mysterious fish in the future!
