Non-English Names The Yorùbá twin names Táíwò and Kẹ́hìndé have a wild origin story

Yorùbá twins (from Nigeria) get the same two names every time, always in the same order, and I never get tired of explaining the logic to people because it's backwards from what you'd guess. Táíwò is born first and means roughly "first to taste the world." Kẹ́hìndé is born second. You'd think Táíwò is the elder since they came out first, right? Nope, Kẹ́hìndé is considered the elder spirit — the belief is Kẹ́hìndé sent Táíwò out first to check if the world was safe.

Same idea with Babátúndé, "father has returned," given when a baby's born not long after a grandfather dies.

Basically the name is a sentence about the exact circumstances of the birth, not just something you pick for sound. Anyone know other naming traditions that work like this?

Baby Names Husband said he doesn’t like chosen name, I’m 39 weeks

So I thought we’d decided on the name Samuel (nn Sammy) for our son due in less than a week.
I’ve bonded to my son as Samuel, love Sammy as a nickname but I feel Samuel should be his birth name for official documentation. My husband has now said he loves Sammy and wants that to be his actual name and hates Samuel.

We’ve thrown around a few more names but finding stumps for them:
Odin- liked but then looked into it more and saw that it has ties to neo-nazis, my husband tried to argue that the name was around before the nazis but just absolutely no way is my son having a name affiliated in anyway to that.

Remy- just feel it’s a name for a little boy, not a grown man. And a rat😅

Apollo- I feel this is a bit too out there?

Ezra- I like but it’s becoming very popular

Enzo- same as reasonings for Ezra

Please help with some more suggestions and/ or agreeing with me that a child needs an actual name that isn’t a nickname for life.
Also please be kind, I do not take the responsibility of naming a child lightly, and I’m very hormonal/ uncomfortable.

Discussion What is it that makes a generation of kids grow up and all tend to cluster around certain names around the time they're starting families?

Upvotes

I just learned that Oscar is becoming a very popular name for babies amongst millennial parents. I'm a young millennial, and I loved the name Oscar since I was a kid because I liked Oscar Wilde ... but Oscar Wilde has been dead for over 100 years. Surely it can't be that all of these other people my age also happened to like Oscar Wilde so much???

It made me wonder why so many people in the same age range tend to just naturally land on certain names that become trendy. Obviously, there's word of mouth, but a lot of times, it seems like people get attached to the name independently, when they're young, only to discover later that many others their age also 'independently' came upon those names!

Loss Opinions on baby name after loss

Hi, a bit of a sensitive topic- our first baby was stillborn at term, we already had her name decided before even getting pregnant, we wanted our first girl to be called Dorothy, nn Dottie. Obviously we don’t get to use her name in day to day life as much as we’d hoped 💔 we were then lucky enough to have our son, who is 2. I’m pregnant again and have a feeling it’s another girl (don’t know for sure yet) and the only name that feels ‘right’ to me so far is Thea. Short, simple but so pretty and not too modern, I feel like I can imagine this name in our family.

However, if Dorothy were here with us, I obviously wouldn’t name a sibling Thea as they’re so similar. But she’s not here… and when talking about her we almost exclusively use Dottie. But I don’t want people to think this baby would be a replacement, OR that we are naming her after her sister, because I wouldn’t want any future child to bear that weight.

Obviously most close people in our lives know about Dorothy, but practically, her name doesn’t come up that much. So to most people we would have 2 children: my son, and Thea.

So do we think it’s too similar, or am I overthinking it? Thanks in advance!

Baby Names Help me with girl names!

Upvotes

We are expecting our first baby in January. So far, we have a boy name: Elliott. But we haven’t been able to decide on a girls name.

Our naming style is classic and elegant. Names we are considering are:

-Vivienne
-Rosalind (Rose)
-Adeline
-Josephine
-Annie

Names I can’t use are anything that ends in -th (like Ruth) because our last name ends in -th. Last name starts with an H and has 2 syllables.

Which of these names do you like best? Any similar names to consider?

Baby Names Lucy or Hallie…naming baby #5

Became pregnant very unexpectedly with baby #5 and struggling to name this baby girl, since we already used our all-time-favorite girl name for our daughter and didn’t think we’d be naming another baby 😅

My biggest worry is of course that the name ‘goes’ with our other children’s names and that her name doesn’t feel like an afterthought. I do prefer the ‘ie’/‘y’ ending for this baby to keep it a bit different than the others.

Our children’s names are Jude, Bennett, Hudson, and Norah.

Right now we are stuck between Hallie or Lucy. Everyone we’ve talked to prefers Lucy, and while I think it’s a lovely name, I’m just not *fully* convinced yet, but I’m hoping comments here can help sway me one direction over the other!

EDIT: Adding a few more names for consideration…

- Elodie, Josephine (Josie), Adelaide (Addie)

Discussion What’s the consensus on a mother giving her daughter the same first name as herself?

I have only encountered this twice in my life (the second time was today; in both instances the mothers were in their 60s - one American family and one Dominican Republic family). I’ve worked in healthcare for over 15 years in the US, so I assumed I would’ve seen this sort of thing happen more often - or is it really that rare?

If I’m being honest it just seems strange that a mother would give her daughter her same first name.

Name Change Potential name regret

Hi all,

My baby is 6 weeks old and I can’t shake the feeling that we may have chosen the wrong name.

My husband has had a boys name picked out since before we were married. The caveat? I thought he was joking. Not sure I want to put our whole name on the internet but it’s a name like “Robin Robinson” or “Matt Matthews.” Perfectly normal names but felt a bit redundant to me.

Fast forward to us being pregnant with a boy-and he goes great we already have the name picked out. I go what do you mean? And he says the name I thought was a joke. (He’s laughing every time he says it so you have to forgive me for not thinking he was serious). He says it’s a solid name. Sounds like a super hero. I have my misgivings. When I bring it up to other people most agree with me. Sounds kind of like a joke.

I actually really like the first name but again just felt it was redundant with the last name and it sounding like a super hero was more of a turn off than a selling point-I didn’t want him thinking or feeling his name was a joke.

So we came up with two other names and decided we’d “see what he looked like” when he came out. The names were William and Henry-one was my grandfather who I was very close to and one was his grandfather. He was also born the day after my grandpas birthday so it felt fitting. I always knew William had to be at least the middle name for this reason.

While I was in labor we started discussing the name again. To my surprise, he had decided to concede and go with the grandpa names. Meanwhile, I had warmed up to the superhero name. So now we both had conceded to the other and just ended up more confused.

We ended up going with the grandpa names. I was extremely exhausted when we made this decision in the hospital and already felt some angst about not honoring my husbands dream name. I also angsted over whether it should be Henry William or William Henry. I wanted to honor my grandpa (William) but dislike some of the nicknames for William vs loving the nickname Hank.

In the hospital I brought up choosing the super hero name but husband said I had already expressed my distaste for the name (I don’t feel like I had? I just had reservations) so that name was off the table.

Within the first few weeks home I brought up multiple times that I regretted our name choice and that I wish we had gone with his choice. My husband was furious. Basically asked why I would poo poo the name and then turn around and want that. He thinks I’m being crazy and overthinking it. But this is my baby’s name!

It doesn’t help that my mom had expressed her distaste for Henry (the name we chose) when we were discussing possible names beforehand. I know it doesn’t matter what she thinks but it doesn’t help that the person I’m asking for advice is probably not being impartial. She thinks I should change it if I feel like it’s not right. When I brought this up to my husband he again was very angry and put his foot down that the name Henry is what we chose and that’s what his name is going to stay.

We also call him Hank for what it’s worth (I love this nickname but know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea). And his middle name is William so…Hank William. I accidentally ended up giving him a “larger than life” name anyway. No, I didn’t realize this in the hospital either. My husband says he did and again thought it “sounded cool.”

Basically tl;dr I like my baby’s name but feel really bad I shit all over my husbands dream name. We’ve been together a LONG time and I should have realized he wasn’t joking. Now that I’m post partum I think it actually probably would have been a great name. Do I try to convince him to change it or let Henry grow on me?

EDIT: THANK YOU GUYS for being so nice to an obviously very hormonal and insecure new mother. All these responses have given me so much confidence in my decision. I finally feel like I’m not crazy for not liking the other name! You all were so supportive of the name we chose and just harsh enough about the name we didn’t that you’ve put me at ease. I’m sure one day Hank will thank y’all, too.

Non-English Names Does Kylie/Kyleigh/Kiley have actual Irish roots?

All my life I have been told that my name could mean a bunch of different things: beautiful, graceful, narrow/strait, slender, by the church, or by the wood. The name “Kylie” is an anglicized version of some Irish name in theory. Most of its origins that I could find trace back to the surname Cadhla (pronounced KY-la or KAY-la) O’Cadhla, but even this is not a very common name in Ireland from what I can find, and has no direct translation in modern Gaeilge. However, the word “caol” (cull??) does mean narrow/slender and caolas means strait. The modern words for graceful and beautiful however, differ greatly.

I’m not an Gaeilge speaker and don’t know too much about the language, but I’m wondering why the most popular “translations” of the name Kylie are graceful and beautiful when I’m struggling to find a word in the language that even remotely sounds like the name. Is it actually Irish at all? Or is it a warped, anglicized version of something vaguely Celtic sounding? I’m kind of having an existential crisis over here about it, so any help from someone well-versed on the topic would be fascinating!

Discussion Middle name too “boyish” ?

I’m 20 weeks pregnant and we have had our baby’s middle name picked out since the day we found out we were expecting. This is both our first, and due to countless medial complications will be our only. My dad passed away 3 years ago and his name was Ron and my partners childhood father figure is ALSO a Ron, so I loved the idea of Ronny for a boy or Ronnie for a girl. Turns out little one is a girl, and now I’m second guessing if it’s a little too “boyish”. I’ve know girls who went by the nickname Ronnie before, and in my opinion the ‘ie’ makes it look more feminine. But it’s also not like you use your middle name ALL that much anyways, but I’m just torn. I have a “unisex” first name myself and have been assumed to be a male before as a kid and I hated it. I just don’t want our daughter hating her name or resentful for giving her that middle name. So long story short, what does everyone think of Ronnie as a girls middle name? Am I overthinking this?

Character/Fictional Names Torn between 2 names for my 1830s Imperial russian novel

Upvotes

As my title, I am writing an Imperial russian novel set in the 1830s, yet I seem to be unable to decide some of the names for my female characters.

For my main female character, I was severely torn between Natalia and Marguerite ( Margarita ) Natalia, I like mainly due to the infleunce of War and Peace, while Marguerite gives me main character unlike Natalia with who I have imposter syndrome,

The other character I have issues with is one of the daughters of Marguerite, the names I have thought about.

Yelizaveta ( named After Marguerite's sister Elisabeth)

Yulia/Julia/ Juliette ( the one I am leaning most towards )

Elena/ Helena ( named After one of the aunts of her mother Marguerite)

I have noticed that many of the nobility used French variants of their names, as French was the primary language of the imperial court.

Marguerite has other children whose names have not caused me issues, with the exception of this.

Alexei

Viktoria / Victoire

Tatyana

Un named fc

Natalya / Natalie

Sophia / Sophie

Aglaya / Aglaé

Baby Names Baby girl name help!

We just learned that our first baby will be a girl. We have girls names we like that we picked out years ago, but they all seem to be fairly popular now. I'd love name suggestions that have similar vibes!

Our top choices are:

  • Hazel (family name)
  • Harper
  • Lucy (husband loves, I think it's just too common)
  • Holly

I also really like Poppy (but think it sounds a little young for the person they'll grow to be), Ivy (but he's not sold) and Olive (he hates olives, and so that's apparently a no go). We both dislike names like Genevieve and Gwendolyn (too long).

Edit to add: my sister has a top 3 name for the year she was born, and there were like 10 girls in her class with that same name. She hated it, and I'm really just trying to avoid that situation.

Baby Names Need Name Ideas For A Girl!

I love the names Adrielle, Isis, and Serena. I also like Soleil/Soleia or Vera for a middle name, but I still want more options before I settle. My only ask is for names to have the same flow as the ones I previously stated. Boy names would also be appreciated since I literally have none…
