Your resume isn't getting auto-rejected, it's getting skimmed past

Some bot scans your resume and tosses it before a person ever sees it, that's the theory half these threads run on. Every recruiter who shows up here says the opposite and they say it a lot: nobody's auto-rejecting anything, they're just opening a couple hundred applications for one posting and giving each one a few seconds because most aren't even close to what's asked for, so if your fit isn't obvious in the exact words the ad used, you're already past.

Once I accepted that and I started running my resume against the posting on https://resume.zoevera.com before I apply and honestly it was a little embarrassing what it flagged, stuff I'd literally done for three years but worded nothing like the ad wanted.

Also have some mock interviews out loud before you go the actual one You may ramble way more than you think.

Applying to dozens of jobs and hearing nothing back?

Most resumes get filtered by ATS software, Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, before a human reads a word of them. It's not judgment, it's string matching against the job posting. Write "customer service" when the listing says "client relations" and you lose points for work you're plainly qualified to do.

You can't catch this by rereading your own resume. You wrote it so your brain fills in every gap a stranger's eyes would trip on immediately. No amount of careful proofreading fixes that, since you already know what the sentence is supposed to say.

One thing you can do is compare your resume against the actual posting at https://resume.zoevera.com to see the match score and which words are missing. The first run doesn't need a signup.

Mass-applying with one generic resume is not a strategy. Is it a bet that volume covers for bad aim?

Most people never ask. They send a beautifully designed resume into a parser that flattens it into noise then wonder about the silence.

The hiring pipeline is a system and like any system it rewards the people who bother to learn how it actually behaves.

Learning the machine is not beneath you. It is part of the job of getting a job. You would not push to a repo before reading how it builds. Do not apply into a system you have not bothered to understand.

You can learn this. Look at which ATS the big US employers actually use and a plain guide to tailoring a resume to a specific description without stuffing it into keyword gibberish.

Your Head Version Is Lying To You

On the train to an interview two years ago, I ran through the STAR method maybe six times. Situation, task, action, result. I had a conflict story ready, a leadership story, a failure story I’d sanded down until it sounded almost noble. By the time I reached the office I felt ready in the way you feel ready for a test you’ve read the answers to. Calm. A little smug.

Then someone asked me to describe a time I disagreed with a teammate and I opened my mouth and I watched myself fall apart in real time.

The two-minute answer that should have taken forty seconds

I rambled. The story that lived so cleanly in my head, the one with the tidy arc, came out of my mouth as a shapeless thing. I started with the disagreement, then doubled back to explain who the teammate was, then remembered I hadn’t set up the project, then lost the thread of why we disagreed at all. Somewhere around the ninety-second mark I heard my own voice say “so, anyway,” which is the sound a person makes when they’ve forgotten their own point and are hoping momentum will find it for them.

It didn’t. I limped to a result that no longer connected to the setup. The interviewer nodded politely. I knew.

Here’s what I learned sitting in my car afterward. Rehearsing an answer silently and saying it out loud are not two versions of the same skill. They are two different skills that happen to share a topic.

Why your brain flatters you in silence

When you run an answer in your head, your brain cheats. It fills in the transitions instantly, because it already knows where the sentence is going. It skips the exact spots where, out loud, you’d stall to retrieve a name or a number. It never makes you commit to a first word, and the first word is usually the hardest one. Everything sounds finished in there because nothing is actually being produced. You’re reviewing a memory of an answer, not generating one.

Written notes have the same flaw and I’d argue a worse one.

Bullet points have no pace. A note that reads “mention conflict, then resolution, then metric” looks complete on the page, but a page can’t tell you that saying all that takes you three minutes when the moment needs one. You can’t hear your filler on paper. You don’t discover that you say “um” every eighth word, or that you start half your sentences with “so basically,” until the sound of it hits your own ears with nowhere to hide.

Speaking forces two things to happen at once that silent prep never touches. You retrieve the content in real time and you edit it in real time, while a person watches and a clock runs. That double task is the actual interview. Everything else is studying for a swimming exam by reading about water.

What changed when I said it to an empty room

After that interview I started doing something that felt ridiculous. I answered questions out loud, alone, to my kitchen. No audience, no stakes, just my voice in a quiet apartment.

The first surprise was how bad I was even with no pressure. My conflict story still ran long. I still wandered. But now I could hear it, and hearing it is most of the fix. By the fourth or fifth time I’d found the shape: one sentence of setup, the disagreement, what I actually did, the number at the end. I trimmed a tangent about a Slack thread that added nothing. I stopped explaining the org chart. The answer went from two minutes to about fifty seconds, and the fifty-second version was better, not just shorter.

None of that trimming happened in my head. My head liked the tangents. Only my mouth, played back through my own ears, could tell me they were dead weight.

If you want structure around this instead of talking to your kitchen, there are tools now that will listen back for you. I’ve been using prepare.zoevera.com lately, an AI coach from the https://www.zoevera.com  team where you record answers to role-specific questions in the browser and it tells you your words-per-minute, flags your filler words, and shows you a strong example answer for comparison. The free tier scores two answers a month without a card, which was enough to catch that I was still creeping past 180 words a minute when I got nervous. Seeing the number did more for me than any amount of telling myself to slow down.

Getting into the room in the first place is a separate fight, one your resume has with an ATS long before any human hears you speak. The same team runs https://resume.zoevera.com  for that half, scoring your resume against a job description’s keywords. Once you’re in the room, though, none of that matters anymore. Only the talking does.

The point isn’t the software. The point is getting the answer out of your skull and into air where you can judge it honestly.

Say the thing

Most people prepare for interviews the way I did on that train. They think about their stories. They believe thinking is the same as being ready, because thinking feels like effort, and effort feels like progress.

Then the question comes, and the gap between the crisp version in their head and the wandering version in their mouth becomes the whole interview.

You can close that gap for free, tonight, by doing the one thing that feels most pointless: talking to a room with nobody in it. Ask yourself a hard question. Answer it out loud, all the way through, no restarts. Listen to what you actually said, not what you meant to say.

You’ll wince. That wince is the work.

Any leads on Montreal jobs English speaking only right now?

My partner is in entry-level tech, graduated last May from an IT programming program. His internship ended and he’s applying heavily for any entry-level tech job.
He’s also willing to do anything right now. Dishwashing, laundry, janitorial stuff, any leads are helpful. All of the online job boards are so sparse when it comes to English speaking only.
Aside from what we are finding on job boards, does anyone have any leads? thanks in advance!

Edit- we are actively learning French lol! Just need to pay the bills in the meantime, if he can’t find an English tech job. Thanks for the helpful comments regarding my request that don’t have to do with learning French so far 🙏🏻

Does anyone else list everything they've done before touching their resume?

The thing that helped me most wasn't rewriting anything. It was sitting down first and listing everything I'd done across school and every job. Projects, results, tools, small fixes nobody asked for. You forget way more than you think and some of your best material is stuff you haven't thought about in years.

Once you have that list, write your bullets around what changed because you were there, not what your job description said. Recruiters skim for outcomes. The screening software before them just matches words from the posting, so where it's honest, use the posting's wording instead of your own.

For the keyword part I check mine against the specific posting at resume.zoevera.com. But the list does the heavy lifting. The tool can't add anything you didn't remember to write down.

Are there basic jobs with animals

Hi there,

I am currently looking for a career switch and I was wondering if there were any jobs available where I can get my foot in the door with animal health care where I don’t need any experience.

Any leads would be very appreciated.

Getting rejected left and right

Looking for an entry level jobs — To pay the bills and help with uni courses I know the economy isn’t what it used to be even 5 years ago but this is killing me on the inside — I feel entirely useless

(picker, packaging, dishwasher, call center agent) something that is repetitive and nothing overly stressful or deals with large groups of peoples other suggestions are welcome

I haven’t worked since 2023 by have to get something soon since I’ll be divorced soon and need somthing that will help me both financially and mentally. Been looking since September 2025

Getting rejected more than anything and I’m struggling with the aftermath of this on top of legal stuff moving houses, school, drivers Ed etc

How did you all cope with the long term rejection when applying for work

FOR HIRE Why so few jobs advertised as Part Time?

If so many employers are advertising jobs as being available and ALL are full time 30+ hours a week, why do so few offer part time roles? Lots of adults nowadays have caring responsibilities (kids, older parents etc) and cannot be at work from 8:30 until 6pm. Why don’t they offer 8:30-3pm or 3-late (for manufacturing etc)?

For context I have a masters and a PhD in chemical engineering and find that if there “is such a need” in this field, why haven’t they spotted it in HR departments yet??

Working Hybrid is simply not the same btw.

But on that note, if you are looking to hire a chemical engineer part time, then I would gladly be interested. I have history in Oil and Gas, Pharmaceuticals and Water and the Mining industry. All particle processes related. I have a PhD, and speak English, French and German.

Can someone please clarify my above mentioned questions please? Many thanks in advance

Chemistry Jobs -- What's the scene like in Montreal?

  • International college student (who is a good language learner, speaks English/Italian/Spanish fluently, and is hoping to pick up French)

Just a general inquiry, not looking for anything right now (I'm in college), but maybe 2-3 years from now. Hoping to acquire skills in analytical chemistry, but open to what's available because I want to move here.

Looking for a technical developer who would be interested in collaborating long-term on a SaaS project

I’m based in Montreal and have been building a niche language-learning product for the Canadian market. It’s still early but starting to get some traction, and I’ve been thinking it could benefit from working with someone more technical to shape the next phase.

I’m not necessarily looking for a typical client/freelance setup. More like collaborating with someone who enjoys building and thinking long-term about a product, where you actually sit down, define the direction, and create something meaningful together.

If you are also building something cool, I'd like to connect. :)

We've built an immersive Saber Experiance, how to get the word out there?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone

This is not meant to be an ad. I am genuinely looking for advice from people who understand fandom communities, experiential spaces, or just creative grassroots marketing in general.

Over the last year we have been building something pretty wild. We took a raw industrial space in Montreal and turned it into a fully immersive saber themed environment. Think spaceship interior vibes, atmospheric lighting, display armories, training areas, sound design, and a general feeling that you stepped into another world for a bit. It is not just a retail shop. The intention was always to create an experience first and a store second.

The feedback in person has honestly been incredible. Everyone who actually comes through the doors loves it. People stay way longer than expected, they bring friends back, they take photos, they want to hang out. It feels like we hit the emotional mark we were aiming for. The challenge is awareness. Almost nobody discovers it organically.

Part of the issue is the location. We are about five minutes outside downtown Montreal which on paper sounds great, and there is parking which is a huge plus. But the reality is the building is an old reconnected factory complex. From the outside it just looks like industrial units. We are not allowed to add exterior signage or advertising to the building. If you do not already know we are there, you would never think to walk in and explore. People basically have to find us online first.

We are also about to start running immersive game nights inside the space. Think narrative driven campaigns, themed challenges, private group events, and hosted sessions with a game master. The goal is to make it feel like you are stepping into a story, not just attending an activity. We really believe this could become a strong community hub if enough people discover it.

Right now we have a brand new Facebook page dedicated specifically to this immersive outpost concept. We are posting photos and updates there but social reach alone feels slow and unpredictable. Paid ads help a bit but they do not fully capture the feeling of being physically inside the space. Word of mouth has been our strongest driver so far.

So I am curious. If you built something niche and experiential like this, how would you get the word out in an authentic way. Not spammy marketing blasts. Not cringe influencer pushes that feel forced. Real awareness that attracts the right crowd. People who actually want to participate and become part of the community.

Would you focus on local fandom groups

Partner with tabletop or cosplay communities

Host open house nights

Lean harder into short form video storytelling

Pitch local media or niche podcasts

Create some kind of viral challenge or event

I am open to creative ideas. Brutally honest feedback is also welcome. If you saw a post like this or heard about a space like this, what would make you curious enough to actually go check it out in person.

Appreciate any thoughts or experience you are willing to share.
