What MetaMask security settings should every user actually configure?

It’s easy to look over these settings, but taking the time to do so can go a long way in protecting your assets. Here’s a few that most people skip but genuinely matter:

Wallet recovery: Settings > Security and password > Manage wallet recovery. Every user should keep an offline, written down version of their secret recovery phrase (SRP). In the event you lose access to your wallet, this is the only guaranteed way to recover it. Never share your private key or SRP with anyone.

Auto lock timer: Settings > Security and password > Auto lock. Default is "Never." Set it to "After 5 minutes" so a locked wallet can't be drained by a potential malicious script running in the background of your device.

Audit your token approvals. Every dApp interaction may have granted unlimited spend permission, which don’t expire automatically. If a dApp offers a “This time only” approval option, use it. If it only shows a spending cap field, set the amount to exactly what you need— not unlimited, not the suggested default. For existing approvals, check and revoke anything stale at revoke.cash.

Verify your extension ID. Fake MetaMask extensions exist, so be sure to confirm yours at chrome://extensions. The official Chrome extension ID is nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn

Hardware wallet for significant holdings: MetaMask works with numerous hardware wallets. Your keys stay on the device, not within your browser. If you're holding more than you'd be comfortable losing, this is a must.

How would you explain Bitcoin to someone who's completely new to crypto?

The simplest way I explain Bitcoin is this:

Bitcoin is a digital form of money that runs on a public network instead of a bank.

When someone sends Bitcoin, the transaction is shared with computers around the world that verify it and add it to a public record called the blockchain.

Because everyone can verify the same record, Bitcoin doesn't need a central authority to approve transactions or keep track of balances. Instead, the network itself enforces the rules.

That's really the core idea. Everything else you may hear about like mining, Proof of Work, wallets, public keys, private keys is built on top of that foundation.

The technical details can get pretty deep, but understanding that concept gets you most of the way there.

If you're interested in learning more about how Bitcoin works under the hood, the MetaMask team recently put together a beginner-friendly guide:
https://metamask.io/news/how-bitcoin-works

Curious how others explain Bitcoin to complete beginners? Always looking for things to add in. I try to keep it short at first, to avoid eyes glazing over 😂 .

Multiwallets

Hello, I have six sub wallets in addition to my first wallet in my metamask, each with a unique swcret phrase, and so say if I open the third wallet and I go to click on some DeFi site and I connect ... problem is well it always connects to just one of the wallets, doesn't matter which one I'm connecting that's in there no matter which one I'm on I could click on it I can open any of the six wallets, go to that site, and it always only defaults to that one address and I need to check I need to have it let me log in with those other walls cuz I it's a long story but what's the deal there

MetaMask turns 10! How did a 598-line browser extension become the world's largest web3 wallet?

Post image
49 Upvotes

Ten years ago, MetaMask launched as a 598-line browser extension that removed the need to run an Ethereum node to interact with web3. Today it has 100M+ downloads, supports Bitcoin, Solana, and Tron alongside hundreds of EVM networks, and has evolved into a full financial platform. Here's a look at the decade that got us here — and where it's headed next.

The Early Years (2016–2019) — Just Get People Onchain

MetaMask launched in 2016, founded by Aaron Davis and Dan Finlay as a simple browser extension. The core idea: you shouldn't need to run an Ethereum node just to interact with web3. What seemed to be a radical simplification at the time went on to become the gateway for an entire generation of DeFi users.

DeFi Explodes & MetaMask Scales (2019–2021)

The DeFi summer of 2020 put MetaMask at the center of everything — Uniswap, Aave, Compound, OpenSea. MetaMask Swaps launched, letting users swap tokens directly in-wallet without hopping between dApps.

Security Gets Serious (2021–2023)

With an increase in scams and phishing attempts, MetaMask invested heavily in security infrastructure. Smart Transactions launched, protecting users from MEV front-running bots. According to internal 2025 data, MetaMask was blocking 6.5M+ malicious website visits, preventing ~150K malicious transactions, and saving users over $500M in potential losses annually. While no self-custodial wallet is risk-free, MetaMask has become one of the most actively protected ones.

Beyond EVM (2023–2025)

One of the biggest criticisms historically — that MetaMask was EVM-only — got answered. Bitcoin and Solana support, Tron, bridges… the wallet that started on Ethereum now works across hundreds of chains.

From Wallet to Platform (2024–2026)

MetaMask stopped being just a wallet. Fiat on-ramps, MetaMask Card, Stablecoin Earn, Perps, Prediction Markets, and the new Money Account all launched under one roof. The latest Agent Wallet addition gives AI agents full DeFi access with built-in security guardrails — a direct answer to the growing conversation of agentic wallets in crypto.

Today: 10 Years, 100M+ Downloads, and "Open Money"

Yesterday MetaMask turned 10. The team announced its next chapter under the banner of "Open Money" — building financial infrastructure that works like the internet. No intermediaries, just your money, working for you.

What's your earliest MetaMask memory — and what would you build into the next 10 years?

Best way to have USDC in ETH network

I need USDC in Ethereum network in Metamask. I did it one way and I'd like to know if there is a cheaper way to do it. This is what I did: I bought ETH on Coinbase, then I sent it to Metamask, then I swapped ETH to USDC.

MetaMask Card has been withholding my money for 11 days as of today

Post image
28 Upvotes

I just want to share this story so everyone is aware of what's happening (and I'll make sure to share it on other subs too).

I have a MetaMask Card that I've been using for the past few months. Eleven days ago, I got an error saying, "Lifetime transactions – you have reached your account limits, please upgrade your account." No warning, no place to track these "limits," nothing — my transactions just stopped going through. I sent an email to MetaMask, and they sent me a Google Form (yes, in 2026) to fill out and submit proof of my address and documents.

Fine, whatever. I filled out the form and sent the additional information. This was ELEVEN DAYS AGO.

In the meantime, on the same day I submitted the form, I received a refund from a $1,500 USD purchase I had made. As usual, that refund went into the "Credits" section of the card. I tried to use that money since it was a refund — so it should count toward whatever "limit" I supposedly hit — and guess what? My money is being withheld, I can't use the card, AND I've requested multiple times for MetaMask to just cancel my card and refund my money (I've already migrated my funds to another wallet), but they refuse to do so.

All I get are emails saying, "Oh, I'm sorry it's taking longer to review your documents" and "We're looking into your issue," even though I've clearly asked three times to cancel my card and refund the money available in the Credits (a.k.a. my refund).

Keep this in mind if you're ever wondering whether you should use this service.

MetaMask just launched Money Account - here's how the yield actually works

MetaMask Money Account is a self-custodial account built into MetaMask Mobile that automatically earns yield on your mUSD — no lockups, no withdrawal penalties, no gas fees, and no account fees. Earn up to 6% APY for a limited time, through August 8th, 2026. The standard rate after the promotion ends is up to 4% APY.

What is mUSD?

mUSD (MetaMask USD) is MetaMask's official stablecoin, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, created in partnership with Bridge and powered by the M0 protocol. It's available on Ethereum Mainnet, Linea, and Monad.

How does Money Account work?

Once you fund your Money Account, your mUSD earns yield automatically in the background — you don't need to do anything. MetaMask handles the DeFi activity on the backend through trusted third-party protocols. Your balance updates daily, and your funds are always accessible — there's no waiting period to withdraw.

Traditional crypto yield strategies often require you to manually deposit into a lending pool, pay gas fees, and wait through lock-up periods — Money Account handles all of that for you.

How to get started:

On MetaMask Mobile, select "Money". Your Money Account is already there, you just need to fund it. Supported stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI and their aToken equivalents) convert to mUSD with no swap or network fees. Other tokens can be deposited, but standard swap fees apply.

What else can you do with it?

Beyond earning yield, mUSD in your Money Account can be used to fund Perps or Predictions accounts directly within MetaMask Mobile, or spend mUSD with your linked MetaMask Card account directly from Money Account. You can also lend mUSD on Aave for additional rewards.

A few important notes:

  • APY is variable and not guaranteed — it changes daily with market conditions
  • The promotional rate up to 6% ends August 8th, 2026. Terms apply
  • Money Account is not available in the UK or countries on the US sanctions list
  • Money Account is self-custodial — MetaMask cannot access, freeze, or move your balance. It's secured by your SRP

More details: https://support.metamask.io/trade/money-account/

Have you tried Money Account yet — and what would you want to use the yield for?

Metamask common problems with Gas fees - with ETH in the account

Seeking a help from MM experienced users. I mostly traded and transferred crypto through crypto exchanges such as Binance. This is my first time using MM wallet for new transcations. I need it to make a payment for API credits i.e. OpenRouter. Initially, I sent the USDC from my exchange account to MM, but I received an error from OpenRouter saying" insufficient fund" without mentioning gas fee though. So I read a few articles saying that it requires gas fee but must be a native coins such as ETH, so I transferred ETH over, but I still couldn't do anything with the USDC e.g. swap / send, however, I can swap ETH with others.

Much appreicated if someone can show me a few steps to spin it up.

Alternative to Metamask Swap?

Hi everyone, I am looking for an alternative to the metamask swap function, It's indeed practical but it doesn't allow ETH -> BTC for example, and i takes a huge 0.3% additional fee that could be avoided, do you have any recommendation?

Metamask Card availability roadmap

Hello everyone. Can I find the list of upcoming countries where it'll be possible to create and get a Metamask card anywhere?

Specifically, I'd like to know whether its availability in Estonia is coming soon or not. I'd really like to get one.

Moreover, does anyone now if Metamask card can be used also as a business? Meaning using Metamask card for business related expenses (including payment of taxes)?

Can I hold both the personal and business Metamask card at the same time?

Thank you in advance.

What is MetaMask Agent Wallet and how does it keep your funds under your control?

MetaMask Agent Wallet is a self-custodial wallet that lets an AI agent trade DeFi autonomously — executing swaps, perpetuals on Hyperliquid, prediction markets on Polymarket, lending and borrowing on Aave — all while you stay in control through spending limits, allowlists, and 2FA on anything outside your rules. Currently in early access, targeting a public launch in summer 2026.

How the control model works

At setup, you’re able to configure which protocols the agent can use, which addresses it can send to, and how much it can move in a 24-hour window. MetaMask Agent Wallet enforces those rules on every transaction. The agent cannot exceed your limits without your approval.

Every transaction goes through a mandatory security pipeline

  • Transaction simulation: MetaMask checks what the transaction will do before it executes
  • Threat scanning via Bloackaid: malicious transactions are auto-blocked; anything flagged as risky gets paused and sent to you for manual approval
  • Smart transactions: MEV protection so bots cannot front-run your agent's trades
  • Transaction shield: up to $10,000 in monthly coverage on eligible transactions, included for MetaMask Agent Wallet transactions (no monthly subscription needed)

Guard Mode vs Beast Mode

  • Guard Mode (recommended): Ensures your agent operates within allowlisted protocols, networks, and a daily spend cap. Anything beyond these limits requires your approval via MetaMask Mobile push notification or email, with a 5 minute window before it auto-declines.
  • Beast Mode: For experienced DeFi traders who want fewer interruptions. Allowlists and spending caps are removed by default, with malicious transactions still blocked, requiring approval.

Self-custody

MetaMask Agent Wallet is non-custodial — your funds aren’t held by MetaMask or any third party. In server wallet setup, your keys are managed inside a secure enclave (TEE), meaning no one else can access them. If you’re a developer who prefers to manage your own keys directly, BYOK mode lets you import an existing wallet and retain full portability outside the CLI.

Early Access is free and open now! Apply at https://metamask.io/agent-wallet. Full public launch coming Summer 2026.

What would you want an AI agent to handle in your MetaMask wallet? Trading, yield strategies, something else?

**Stuck with Bridged USDC.e in MetaMask — can't transfer without ETH for gas fees (India)

\*\*Stuck with Bridged USDC.e in MetaMask — can't transfer without ETH for gas fees (India)\*\*

Hey everyone, I have about 104.98 USDC.e (Bridged USDC) sitting in my MetaMask wallet worth around ₹10,054. Whenever I try to send or move it to another account/wallet, it's asking for ETH as gas fees — but my ETH balance is 0.

I'm based in India and trying to figure out the cheapest/easiest way to cover the gas fee so I can move these funds out.

A few questions:

  1. What's the minimum ETH I need to buy just to cover a typical USDC.e transfer gas fee?

  2. Which Indian exchange is best to buy a small amount of ETH quickly (WazirX, CoinDCX, Binance IN)?

  3. Is there any way to move USDC.e without needing ETH for gas — like gasless transfers or a different bridge?

  4. Which network is this USDC.e on? (Trying to figure out if it's Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, etc.)

Any help appreciated! 🙏

Incorrect Password

Incorrect password in MetaMask

I'm asking guys, why did my account password on MetaMask get incorrect? My account has 200 USD, and I'm sure my password is correct. No matter how many times I enter my password, it still says "Invalid password." I also don't have my 12-word recovery phrase. What could be the reason for this?

What are the most common ways people lose crypto through MetaMask and how do you prevent it?

With self-custody comes full control — and full responsibility — of your funds. We are sharing this to best help you safeguard and take control of your wallet, preventing a loss rather than having to pick up the pieces.

Mistakes we see constantly:

Taking a screenshot of your secret recovery phrase (SRP). Screenshots sync to cloud backups automatically on most phones. If your cloud storage gets compromised, your wallet is gone.

Entering your SRP on any website. There is no legitimate reason for any website or support agent to ask for your SRP. If something or someone is asking for it, it's a scam.

Using the same SRP for a "hot" and "cold" wallet. If your hot wallet gets compromised, the attacker has your cold wallet too. This removes the purpose of a hardware wallet entirely.

Social login users who don't protect their wallet password. If you signed up with Google, Apple, or Telegram, MetaMask encrypts and backs up your SRP automatically — though you should still write down your 12-word SRP. Your wallet password is the only thing that can decrypt it. No one else — not MetaMask, not Google, not Apple — can recover it for you. Treat your password exactly like you would an SRP.

What to do instead:

Write down your SRP and store it offline. Some people use pen and paper, others metal backup plates for fire/flood resistance. Never enter it digitally unless you're recovering a wallet on a device you trust and have cleaned.

Use a hardware wallet for anything significant. MetaMask acts as the interface; your keys stay on the device.

If you used social login, your wallet recovery requires both your Google/Apple/Telegram login and your wallet password — neither alone is sufficient. Store your password securely and back your social login with 2FA.

Enable auto-lock in MetaMask settings, and periodically revoke token approvals you no longer need.

Full security guide: https://support.metamask.io/privacy-and-security/basic-safety-and-security-tips-for-metamask/

If you have a security question or think you've been compromised, please come to https://support.metamask.io — don't DM random accounts claiming to be MetaMask support (they're scams). No one from MetaMask Support will DM you first.
