EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Other How to discreetly alert a doctor without tipping off my parents?

I have an eye appointment tomorrow and have some things that REALLY REALLY can’t be ignored. like imminent blindness fear kind of urgent. not sure if actual imminent blindness, but sources seems to be point that way. my last two eye appointments have had my worries glossed over or outright ignored by the doctors and i’m not 100% how to proceed to get taken seriously.

I am suffering from severe medical neglect and it makes me a bit fearful to tip off my parents. some of my symptoms have been flashing lights, static in the corner of my eyes, seeing colors or hazes, and waves of white. just as an indicator of where i’m standing. this is just the simplified version. The parent portal does not seem like an option since my parents are aware of that. they are not tech illiterate. so i’m trying to rely on some kind of visual que or hoping that there is an established “i need help” physical que or just some special discreet word that serves the same function as the pizza distress call? not to downplay the distress call but it’s the best comparison i have for what i’m seeking. i possibly thought of blinking or tapping morse code “S.O.S” but i’m not sure that doctors are trained for that.

I’m not trying to say i’m at imminent risk or am asking for a “diagnose me” answer. just asking for tips on how to approach this? i’m hoping i did not misunderstand the rules.

I have a note of all my symptoms on my phone that i showed the doctor and it seemed to be glossed over. i can paste it here if need be. it’s just a little lengthy.

Eyes Dry Eye Help

Hey guys, I have some pretty annoying dry eye. I can’t go 5 minutes playing video games on my monitor without my eyes starting to burn. I use eye drops occasionally but I don’t feel they really help me and I also hate applying them. Is there any supplements I can take that’ll help me a lot? My dry eye is caused by clogged glands.

Other Post-IV vein popping out

Hey guys,

got surgery the 10th and had a super painful IV that hurt really bad when stuff was pushed, even flushes sometimes. That's not terribly abnormal for me as I have EDS and very small, weak veins.

IV was removed the 11th so it's been almost 2 weeks. I have a large pale yellow bruise following the line of my vein up my bicep. No pic just cause it doesn't show very well. It's still painful to fully straighten my arm, painful when pressure is applied, painful to lift weight etc. Sometimes even passively painful. and my vein is big and protruded enough I can feel it through a thin shirt.

Is this normal? I've had a bazillion IVs and never had that happen to me.

EDITED 28M -- Been fatigued chronically with sus allergies or some auto-immune reaction for 8 years now.

I guess in a different country I'd qualify for disability and its claims, but in India, not so much. I have 'allergies' (as per the allergy test) for at least 57 different foods, and other substances such as cotton, dust, and cockroaches. Because of that sheer number of triggers + overlap, I am just constantly tired and sometimes sick for 4 days a week. I cannot keep going on like this if I wish to have a career and survive. None of the OTC allergy meds work, and only painkillers work at times. I just stay groggy and low energy and unenthusiastic and irritable ALL DAY. idk if this is because of cPTSD or some other disorder like MCAS or just allergies.

IgE is 411 IU/ml.

IDK if they are allergies per se because, different foods give me different reactions, or rather, some have drastic reactions and some do not. e.g., Cow milk and its products give me muscle cramps and intense muscular pain at times, and joint pain. Clarified cow butter can make me instantly dizzy and sleepy and fully feverish. Peanuts and some other nuts give me almost-asphyxiation (my throat tightens), my head spins, and I feel sleepy and dizzy. Other foods that I am allergic to do not give me muscle pain but fatigue me that I'd rather sleep. Note that this is not as drastic as feeling instant-sleep by cow butter. I rarely get any skin reactions.

tldr for backstory: grew up under extreme abuse, have anxiety, slept in dusty, moldy sheets, ate rotting food, drank dirty water; deficient in few vitamins now, and idk to what I pinpoint my conditions to, and how to heal from these.

I'll edit this if I remember some important detail. please ask me anything that might help identifying the issues.

Below is some backstory in case it helps with the hypotheses:

I am 28M, 174cm and 95kgs. I grew up in an extremely abusive household (getting beaten and shouted at for hours) and faced extreme abuse in school as well (the word 'bullying' does not cut it; I'd be groped all over and shoved and twisted again for hours back to back between class breaks).

My maternal grandparents were with me until I was 13 who gave me nutritious food. They left, and my mom would just cook the most random stuff that would qualify for prison food, and sometimes even cook veggies that has kind of been rotting. No proper nutrition since then.

I had high energy (probably due to high adrenaline due to abuse) until I was 18. I would walk for miles and miles without tiring, and work/study for 13-15 hours a day. Two weeks or prior to my 20th b'day, we stopped getting purified water since we did not have enough money, and started drinking a little bit dirty water without any boiling and processing. A week after my 18th b'day, I felt extremely dizzy and rushed walking home, and could not get up for hours. My mom did not attend to me, and my friend came home after many hours to give me meds. This same sudden dizziness happened another time as well. This same month once my entire leg was too numb that I was not able to walk for 5 minutes. From this point onward, my tiredness and fatigue has just been increasing year by year.

To note, my mom has already been feeding me improperly since I was 13. Please do not ask why I did not cook for myself; I was not allowed, and I was constantly abused.

Since it was just me and my mom, I tried to keep the house as clean as I could. But even then, rooms were extremely dusty, and since I was tired all the time, sometimes I'd not change sheets for months, and I guess I was sleeping on dusty, moldy sheets for a few years.

At this point, we were eating both improperly and very less as well due to no money. I started looking for a job, and tried OTC supplements with no avail. Then I thought that maybe I am iron deficient, and started Iron syrup, and that seemed to give me a little bit energy. This is also when I tried eating more peanuts to get iron and other nutrients from some street vendors.

From age 20-23, my energy would ebb and flow. If I ate something I was extremely allergic to like peanuts, I would just be so drowsy as if I were on some drugs, and even two cups of coffee would sometimes not be enough to keep me awake. I could not sleep in office, and how many sick days could I even take. Because of this, just battling drowsiness the whole day, I'd be backlogged, and then I'd panic-work to meet deadlines on weekends. My anxiety which was already high increased even more.

age 20-21 my feet would go numb if i wore something too tight, and i continued iron syrup intermittently.

age 21-23 was also when it was lockdown, and I was with my mom who by then had gone fully schizophrenic, and if she weren't shouting at me, she would be shouting at her voices. Still no proper food. I am somehow trying to keep up by eating protein and fruits from outside.

age 23 marked the peak of my fitness wherein i was clocking close to 17 miles of walking every day. This was happening, and also me feeling fatigued while working. Actually, the only time I'd not feel fatigued was when I'd walk. Mainly I had a lot of anxiety and anger and that was enough to make me walk, but I also wanted to burn fat and I kept pushing myself. But it did not feel like anything since my feet would not hurt.

This went further downhill when one fine day I had an intense, out-of-the-body panic attack at age 23. After that panic attack, I felt even more tired than usual. My psych suggested that I move out, and I did. In the midst of figuring out moving, I stopped walking for miles, and now it has been 4 years since I have walked for miles. I can barely walk one mile without heaving these days.

Ever since the panic attack, I have become super-sensitive to caffeine (or maybe I have connected with my body and can identify when I am jittery and anxious and I do not suppress my emotions lesser now, idk?)

Now, age 23-28: I am low contact with my mom. I cook for myself and I am trying to keep my house as clean as possible. But unlike age 20-23 wherein I felt fatigue for only 4-7 hours a day and could make up for lost time by working during the rest of the day, now, I feel drained for almost 8-10 hours a day. My main deficiency as per recent reports is Vitamin D. I am yet to do a thorough mineral panel. I have lost a bit of muscle, I have gained fat, I cannot walk for even a mile, and as I said, I am just constantly groggy and low energy and unenthusiastic and irritable ALL DAY.

Please help me out.

I'll edit this if I remember some important detail. please ask me anything that might help identifying the issues.

Injury Scab/Injury inside ear causing immense pain and headaches when touched

I have an injury on my antihelix (specifically right ear), it’s a small scab. I’m not too sure where I got it from or how it appeared but it’s there and when I touch it or it comes in contact with something I’ll feel a sharp throb all over my head like it’s being squeezed - almost a headache feeling but more painful? But not quite so. It’s EVERYWHERE on my head, and then has a lingering after feeling on my left and middle side, not pulsing but insistent pressure that doesn’t go away for atleast an hour or two.. obviously the solution is to not touch it and let it heal.. though aside from that why’s that pain happening? Is there a name for it or medial term and explanation? I haven’t been able to dig much up on it.. thank you

Pregnancy/Contraception Missing periods

Ok so this is a tough one. I have a lot of health conditions therefore a medical team. I (21f) had only one period at 16, and haven't had one since. I'm terrified to go to my gp in case they need to send tests to my local hospital and my team finds out because they do and will judge. To be clear, hormones, thyroid levels, adrenal issues are all normal and I have the other symptoms like pain, headaches, fatigue, cataminial epilepsy on a regular "cycle", just not the blood. I am also not looking to have kids, and am set hard on that. Do I NEED to do anything and if so how? I especially don't want mom finding out and feel fine otherwise

Other Help, I'm Always Low In Energy

15-year-old male with years of unexplained fatigue, brain fog, and delayed puberty signs. Looking for possible causes or what should be investigated next.

Hi! I'm a 15-year-old male from the Philippines. I've been experiencing persistent low energy and brain fog since around Grade 5, and it's still affecting me now in Grade 11. The symptoms are present almost every day and have significantly affected school, sports, and social life.

Main symptoms

- Chronic fatigue / very low energy almost every day

- Brain fog (slow thinking, poor concentration, reduced mental stamina, difficulty finding words)

- Wake up tired even after 7.5–8 hours of good-quality sleep

- Exercise intolerance (get tired much faster than friends)

- Low physical strength

- Social activities also drain my energy

- Dark circles under my eyes that don't improve much even with enough sleep

- Cold hands and feet sometimes

- Occasional mild lightheadedness when standing (used to be much worse before)

Puberty concerns

- 15 years old

- No armpit hair yet

- Very little body hair

- Often mistaken for someone much younger than my age

- Baby face / younger appearance compared to classmates

Things that DON'T seem to explain it

- Food doesn't noticeably improve the fatigue.

- Water doesn't noticeably improve it.

- Coffee only helps a little, if at all.

- Lying down or resting usually doesn't restore my energy.

- Sleep is usually deep and uninterrupted.

Recent laboratory results

- CBC: Normal (Hemoglobin 15.2 g/dL)

- Iron studies: Normal

- Ferritin: 648 (possibly elevated from previous iron supplementation and/or recent illness)

- Vitamin B12: 738

- TSH: 4.09 (upper end of normal/borderline high)

- Free T4: Normal

Other information

- Previously had low blood pressure.

- I have POIS (Post-Orgasmic Illness Syndrome), but my baseline fatigue continues even after reducing ejaculation, so it doesn't seem to fully explain everything.

- My pediatrician referred me to a hematologist, but I'm wondering if an endocrine problem should also be investigated.

My questions

  1. Based on this history, what conditions would be highest on your differential diagnosis?

  2. Would delayed puberty or hypogonadism be a reasonable possibility?

  3. Should I be evaluated by a pediatric endocrinologist?

  4. What additional blood tests or imaging would you recommend?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
