I keep a running list of small American makers that actually cut and sew or build in-house, because the "made in USA" lists that float around are often recycled and out of date. This includes clothing, footwear, and everyday-goods, organized by category. Cities and prices are current as of this month. If there's a category missing, ask me and I'll check if I have anything.

Boots and shoes

• Rancourt & Co. (Lewiston, ME): handsewn mocs and boots, $198 to $478, recraftable for life.
• Truman Boot Co. (Eugene, OR): Goodyear-welted boots cut to finished in Oregon, most models around $480 (work boots from $379).
• Origin USA (Farmington, ME): boots and shoes made in their own Farmington factory, most boots $290 to $425, about as vertically integrated as it gets.

Shirts (oxfords and flannel)

• New England Shirt Co. (Fall River, MA): oxfords $178 to $188, sewn in the same Fall River factory since 1933.
• Gitman Vintage (Ashland, PA): the classic oxford button-down, $235 to $310.
• Vermont Flannel Co. (East Barre, VT): honest flannels $79 to $89, the value pick.

Jeans and work pants

• Dearborn Denim (Chicago, IL): own Chicago factory, jeans $40 to $89, the cheapest genuinely US-made pair going.
• Round House (Shawnee, OK): work jeans and overalls $65 to $90, running since 1903.
• Railcar Fine Goods (El Monte, CA): own California factory, selvedge around $238.

Socks (the easy win)

• Darn Tough (Northfield, VT): merino socks around $20 to $30 with an unconditional lifetime guarantee, wear a hole in a pair and they send you a new one.
• Zkano (Fort Payne, AL): organic cotton socks around $19 to $22 a pair, in a town that used to be the sock capital of the country.
• Wigwam (Sheboygan, WI): around $20 to $26 a pair, made in Wisconsin since 1905.

Bags and totes

• Duluth Pack (Duluth, MN): canvas and leather packs $150 to $400, since 1882.
• Steele Canvas (Wilmington, MA): canvas totes and baskets $75 to $125
• Sea Bags (Portland, ME): totes cut from recycled sailcloth, $175 to $265.

Wallets and leather

• Leather Works Minnesota (St. Paul, MN): wallets $55 to $115, family-made since 1999, some lines cut from Red Wing's SB Foot tannery leather.
• Craft and Lore (Coeur d'Alene, ID): the minimalist Port Wallet at $59.
• Tanner Goods (Portland, OR): belts around $130, wallets $105 to $145.

Hats and a few home goods

• Ebbets Field Flannels (Seattle, WA): wool ballcaps $48 to $68, the real vintage patterns.
• Stormy Kromer (Ironwood, MI): the original wool cap, $50.
• Faribault Mill (Faribault, MN): wool throws $195 to $295, milled in a 160-year-old Minnesota mill.

One thing to keep in mind: check origin at the item level, not the brand name. Plenty of good brands run a US line and an imported line side by side, and "assembled in USA" or "sewn in USA on imported fabric" are not the same as built here start to finish. When in doubt, look at the specific product page.

I just want to get this off my chest, ever since the 250th anniversary of America I just really need to say this and speak my mind. I am sick and tired of the mass immigration that has happened in recent years and is continuing to happen in this country. Just because a person’s able to get a green-card and USA citizenship doesn’t make them an American. Only people who are born on American soil are real American’s. My family are immigrants and they all got their citizenship like 50 years ago here and they came to this country and assimilated. They didn’t bring their culture with them, they adjusted to American life. I believe all foreigners who want to come here respectfully and peacefully should be doing the same thing. You can not hate your own country and escape to America but still try to make America just like the country you escaped. Also another thing that foreigners who come to the US don’t understand and WILL NEVER understand is our beautiful Constitution. I hope everyone in here is doing well. The title is pretty clear. Please help save Birdwell Beach Britches, a 60+ year U.S. heritage brand, from it's new/current private equity owners.

WHY DOES BIRDWELL NEED SAVING?

Birdwell is a heritage U.S. brand that has been around for 65 years. The brand bears the original family name and has built a strong reputation with surfers, lifeguards, and watermen for generations. The current private equity owners are tarnishing that reputation in pursuit of profit...

-Offshoring: Under the new ownership, Birdwell has quietly and deceptively offshored many items that were previously made right here in the U.S.A. Some egregious examples included taking specific items that were previously made in the U.S.A. and then restocking the same item or reissuing a new color of the exact same item at the same price but quietly removing the 'Made in U.S.A.' from the item description.

-False Guarantee Claims: There are numerous accounts of customers being denied reasonable 'lifetime guarantee' claims against clearly defective products. Even worse, Birdwell has been untruthful (intentional or otherwise) about the scope of their 'Lifetime Guarantee' claiming that it doesn't cover certain products when literature on their site (since removed) and in promotional emails states differently.

-Decreased Quality: Even with items still made in the U.S. (such as board shorts), many have cited a very notable and clear drop in quality (stitching coming undone, fabric tearing, buttons falling off, etc). Some personal anecdotes (here on Reddit) included a lifeguard troop that had worn Birdwell for years deciding to completely switch brands after having multiple pairs of Birdwells (made under the current owners) rip after just a few days of wear.

-Horrible Customer Service: many have echoed the sentiment that customer service is awful. They are often impossible to reach, unhelpful, and even unbelievably rude. One particularly bad instance involved a customer being privately contacted on social media and angrily scolded for sharing pictures of a defective pair of board shorts that had ripped.

-Suppressing Negative Reviews: In my own personal encounter, I had left multiple legitimate and true negative reviews for items on the Birdwell site that were either removed or just never published. Given the unrealistically high customer reviews shown for items on their site, I think it is quite likely that they are removing/omitting many more negative product reviews. They also delete/hide many critical/negative comments left on their social media pages.

-(Possibly) Falsifying Positive Reviews: In addition to omitting/removing negative reviews, it also seems likely that they are falsifying positive reviews. Although this might be hard to prove without an official investigation, the high number of 5-star reviews on their site that seem to be scripted suggest that they may be falsifying positive sentiment about their products.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Birdwell is no stranger to lawsuits. They recently lost a $3million lawsuit to a former employee.

However, individuals taking Birdwell to small claims court over a faulty merchandise, un-fulfilled claims, etc. would not amount to much. Most people would most likely just choose not to purchase again in the future rather than follow through with any legal action. I think Birdwell knows this which is why they continue to use deceptive practices.

However, the issue of false reviews (both removing negative reviews AND leaving fake positive reviews) falls clearly under the FTC Consumer Review Rule). Both of these practices, if found guilty, can be punished with fines exceeding $50,000 per violation (if 100 reviews were faked/removed, that could potentially be $50,000 x 100).

CALL TO ACTION

-Report any instances of potential fraud to the FTC. This includes denied guarantee claims that you feel were legitimate, misinformation about guarantees, and maybe most importantly, any experience of honest/true negative reviews being omitted/removed OR fake positive reviews being left or encouraged. -Share any negative experiences with products, customer service (or otherwise) here. A quick search of Birdwell reviews shows an large amount of personal accounts shared on Reddit. This means that anyone searching the brand can see this. Although the current owners of Birdwell seem to be trying to suppress any negative sentiment around the brand (rather than resolving the actual problems), they cannot suppress the information shared on places like Reddit.

Hi all, I’m looking for a tote bag for daily wear. I like the truck tote from Tom Bihn, but saw it’s made in Vietnam. I have been using a Longchamp Le Pilage tote for many years and am wanting to replace it with something different. Any recommendations?

I have been looking for some good quality t-shirts and hoodies with American flag designs and military support themes. I bought a few from random places online and they all fell apart after a couple of washes. The graphics cracked and the fabric shrank. It is annoying to spend money on stuff that looks terrible after a month.

I want something that actually holds up and looks decent. I would rather support a company that gives back than some random overseas operation. Any recommendations for a brand that is actually worth the money?

I finally copped myself a pair of RE’s Archers. First ever US made glasses I own. Definitely worth it, especially being sunglasses! I’ve been wearing my non-prescription Oakley sunglasses (not US made) for a couple years since I started wearing prescription glasses.

A Titanium ring that I printed on one of the LPBF metal 3D printers at my company a while ago. We decided to leave the outer surface a raw as-printed finish (with a little etching to brighten it), while the inside was machined and sanded down for a smooth fit. We mostly print industrial tooling/fixturing on these machines (along with the occasional automotive intake manifold or other customer part), so printing jewelry is an interesting change of pace.

I need help finding a couch because I think I made a $7,000 mistake.

Our decorator recommended the Bassett Allure Track Arm Bench Sofa, and we ended up buying two of them (92" each, L shaped layout). On paper they seemed perfect (looked nice, modern, sleek) but I cannnot stand them!!

My biggest complaints:

• The back cushions are TERRIBLE. They're flimsy, constantly slouch over, and need fluffing after what feels like every use. They're loose and not fixed to anything which is soooo annoying.
• The backs are also so low that there's basically zero head support. I'm currently 6 months pregnant and it's to the point that I avoid sitting in my living room to avoid sitting on the couch.
• Arm rests suck. Again too low and not really useable.
• They look nice in photos, but they're just not comfortable for actually living in.

The only thing I really like is the seat depth (never had a couch this deep). The bench seat is deep enough to curl up on, and I'd definitely want to keep that.

I'm now thinking of replacing them with a sectional since our living room is huge and I think it'd feel a lot cozier.

Here's what I'm looking for:

• Something cozy and sustainable!! Something that our family can sit around and chat/watch TV etc. We have a toddler and a dog and my parents live across the street, so something that everyone can enjoy!
• Deep seat (similar to the Allure)
• Large sectional preferred over two sofas (roughly replacing two 92" sofas in an L-shaped layout) - our living room is huge
• Back cushions that are actually supportive and keep their shape over time
• Taller backs with enough support to comfortably lean your head back
• Modern Mediterranean aesthetic (clean lines, warm neutrals, cannot be traditional as our house is pretty modern)
• Budget is flexible. I'd rather spend more once than keep replacing furniture.

I'm less interested in "the prettiest designer sofa" and more interested in something that's comfortable every single day and built to last 15-20 years. I live in a small town in Texas so don't have a lot of large stores I can go in person to look, but willing to travel to larger cities based on recs. Any thoughts are appreciated!
