Do you have any connection to France?

I love going to holiday in France. I often wonder, passing through your county, what kind of connection you have with the place. Some historical, some modern. Maybe a mix of animosity and affiliation? You're the future of champagne now I hear.

But how many ordinary Kent people lead lives connected with the border? Feasibly, you could learn French and have an awesome time living in and out of France, perhaps importing things. Jobs with the shuttle/ferries. Curious, tell me more good people of Kent. Do curious French people end up walking around the streets of Folkestone on a day trip? What's the deal?

Advice for moving to bromley/beckenham/sidcup

Hi everyone,

My wife and I (late thirties) are hoping to move to the area later this year and would really appreciate some local advice from people who actually live there.

At the moment we're looking at places such as:

  • Bromley (especially around Bromley North/Bromley South)
  • Shortlands
  • Beckenham
  • Bickley
  • Sundridge Park
  • Chislehurst
  • Elmstead Woods
  • Sidcup (and nearby)

We're looking for somewhere that's:

  • safe and generally feels nice to live in
  • fairly quiet (not a busy main road)
  • close to parks/green spaces
  • has a decent high street, cafés, restaurants or shops nearby
  • has good public transport into London
  • would still be practical for driving around southeast London for work

We'll probably be renting initially but hope to buy in the future, so we're trying to find somewhere we'd genuinely enjoy living rather than just somewhere convenient.

Are there any areas you'd particularly recommend, or any that you'd avoid?

Also, are there any places nearby that we might have overlooked?

Thanks!

For anyone looking for an architect in Tunbridge Wells — a bit of guidance

I’m working with a client on a house extension in Tunbridge Wells, and I’m genuinely curious what people are struggling with most. After 15 years as an architectural designer, I keep seeing the same things pop up — dark kitchens, awkward layouts, unproportional rooms that could be amazing but aren’t.

What’s the one thing in your home you wish you could fix or redesign?

Flow? Light? Storage? A weird room that makes no sense?

Happy to share ideas if it helps.

And if you want to see the kind of projects I’ve worked on, I’ve got a few examples at alexbryla.com

An Urban VLR Transit System for Medway

As Medway continues to grow, becoming (what feels like) one merged city, the question of the productivity of its public transport must be drawn into question.

Many areas in the Medway towns are becoming highly developed, from Strood Waterfront, Rochester Waterfront, Chatham Centre, and Gillingham Waterfront. With a population of just under 300,000 residents, we must consider modernising and improving infrastructure - a key feature of this being public transit.

Urban VLR (Very Light Rail) is being developed in Coventry, as a much cheaper alternative to Trams. Track costs £10million per KM to lay, and would allow multiple bus routes to be decommissioned.

As we move into the future, and Medway continues to grow (I mean, have you seen the planned high-rises in Gillingham!) it is important to consider how to modernise our city, and make it as Liveable as possible.

This VLR system includes many important interchanges for travellers, connecting our towns effectively, and importantly, cleanly!

Whitsable/Tankerton pub crawl

Hi there. Me and my wife are visiting soon. We both do like a good pub or two. I have found a few gems it seems but I always like to know what locals would give as a pub crawl. Thanks so much! If you want some good suggestions for London then I'll be happy to share!

Kent residents needed for a 5–7 minute university survey on attitudes towards same-sex marriage (18+)

Hello,

I am an undergraduate student at SWPS University conducting a BA research project on how adults currently living in England and Wales describe their views on same-sex marriage and any changes in those views over the past decade.

I am sharing it here to include residents of Kent in the study.

Eligibility:

• aged 18 or over

• currently living in England or Wales

The questionnaire takes approximately 5–7 minutes.

The survey does not ask for your name or email address and is configured not to retain your IP address or location data. Participation is voluntary and unpaid. Some questions concern personal or potentially sensitive views, and “Prefer not to answer” options are available.

Responses across the full range of opinions — supportive, neutral and opposed — are equally valuable. Please consider taking part regardless of your own view.

Survey link:

Thank you for considering taking part.

Canterbury Esports Team with Bootcamp

Hello all,

Im an esports lecturer who works in London but lives over in Canterbury.

I'm writing here to share the opportunity to join a small but determined esports organisation.

With the backing of Canterbury Academy and local businesses, we have access to a local gaming facility.

I intend to support the team as a coach and manager and ensure we can compete in Lans.

I'd prefer to recruit local players, however im open to most people who see a role for themselves within this operation.

I hope to hear back from those willing to participate. You can always contact me over DC.

Many thanks!

MISSING PLEASE HELP

EDIT: HES BEEN FOUND!!!

MISSING PLEASE SHARE:

At 1:30am this morning our cat Lucifer managed to squeeze his way out of our loft conversion window and climb out onto the roof. We think he fell as we were woken up by tiles scraping and something hitting our bin.

We have looked up and down the street, under peoples cars and in people’s front gardens on the entire street.

He is an indoor cat, very skittish and possibly injured so we don’t think he went far.

He’s a big boy and jet black and might answer to ‘Lucifer’ or ‘Mazzy’ (his sisters name)

The road we’re on is Fairfield Road, Minster, Ramsgate, CT12 4AW

He is chipped and neutered so please either take him to a vet or call/text me at 07468464444

Any Irish communities in Kent

(i.e. people from Ireland, rather than traveller communities)

Are there any Irish communities in / around the Maidstone / Ashford / Tonbridge areas of Kent (or further afield if need be)? Ideally centred around hurling and camogie, music, language etc, as opposed to simply drinking Guinness?

travel advice: staying in Deal for 1 week and want to visit Canterbury and Sandwich. Questions about most efficient way to do so by train.

Is it feasible to think I can do both in the same day? Which would be better for early afternoon-afternoon vs. afternoon-night (assuming Canterbury would be best for night since it is bigger)?

We don't care about the pub or nightlife scene, so will basically just be wandering around the streets and seeing the sights, parks, gardens, churches, walking along the water, going into small shops, etc. Also don't care to pay to get into Canterbury cathedral, so don't take that into the equation.

Should I just give each a day? I was hoping to do some sort of train loop from Deal > Sandwich > Canterbury and then back to Deal, but it seems the trains either switch at Ramsgate or somewhere else and switch back on each other, which is fine, but they take a lot more time than I was expecting. Maybe I am not looking at the right routes? I looked into buses, but they seem to take way too much time.

Any advice is very much appreciated!

If you live in a parking zone, do you get visitor permits for tradespeople in vans, or do the wardens have an unofficial rule to not touch vans which are doing a job?

Location Help.

Late twenties couple looking to buy in Kent. Love Orpington but think we are priced out. Budget is under 400k. Need to stay within the TfL travel zones to avoid insane monthly travel costs.

Any recommendations for best places to buy in?

EDIT: happy with anything as long as it has a garden.

Thank you
