It was just shared on Chad's support FB page that he has died. After a head injury circa 2019, he was left unable to speak or function. He was in various facilities over the past several years, but he was able to communicate with others through movements and noises. Course of Empire has reissued two of their albums (and released an outtake album too) in support of Chad over the past few years.
I know that Course of Empire isn't a huge name around here. But they had a brief spell on a major label and they were truly unique, combining elements of industrial rock, post-punk, and noise rock...and they were one of the few bands to utilize two drummers simultaneously (and not just an extra percussionist either - actual full-blown drum kits for both). Chad was essentially an original member (he joined a few months after the band's formation but before anything was recorded anyway) and he appeared on all three of the band's albums. Along with vocalist Vaughn Stevenson, bassist Paul Semrad, and guitarist Mike Graff, Chad played with drummer Anthony Headley, who was replaced by Kyle Thomas, who was replaced by Michael Jerome. Chad also did a lot of the engineering and production work on the Course of Empire music. After the band broke up in 1998, he went on to do tech work at Dallas venues (I'm not from there so I don't know those specifics).
Here's a few standout tracks from Course of Empire. RIP Chad.
