I think that John and Chas's friendship is one of the most interesting parts of Hellblazer to me . On the surface it's just another show of how John manipulates people around him. But I like the way they both use each other. How they both envy each others lives in different ways.
It's a toxic friendship most definitely but Chas is the only Consistent thing in John's life.

My initial thoughts on the new Hellblazer omnibus.

Looking to get into Hellblazer, just curious where I start, what to buy, I’ve seen a lot of different options and I’m kinda confused lol

For those unaware, he played the Hellblazer in episode 3 of the sandman audiobook

I’m on issue 273 and Milligan is continuously PMO. I want to write a Hellblazer reboot fancomic. Is there anything important in this that I need to read before I start that? Or can I just abandon this and go back to John being himself?

I recently binge read this book over the last couple months and completely fell in love with it. Here my ranking of all the major arcs because why not.

For a while now I have wanted to read the original 1988'-2013' run of Hellblazer. I saw that a new HC omnibus is coming out and thought why not now!? I am not well versed in the Hellblazer runs or really collected editions in general and had a question about the order/how they are collected.

If I am understanding the contents of the HC Omnibuses that are currently out, the run hasn't been completed yet (printed in Omnibus format that is)? So I can only read up to it seems #250 with the latest release? From what I found the order would be:

Vol 1 (2024) - Delano

Vol 2. (2025) - Delano

Vol 1 (2020) - Ennis

Vol 1 (2026) - Jenkins & Phillips

Is it also normal to print them out of order?

Any information or guidance in the right direction to get started would be most appreciated!

I know the majority of Hellblazer fans hate Milligans run. So I’m curious, if you were given the book at #251 knowing you had to finish John’s story by #300, what would you have wrote? What would the final arcs have been? How would you characterize John this late in his life? Etc…

​I know this arc is quite unpopular, but I wanted to share my own interpretation of it. Stanley tells two stories. ​The first story: John tells Stanley he forgives him. It was a clever plan. He asks Stanley what happened between them during that time. He approaches Stanley and tells him, "Hate is a powerful emotion, but it’s funny how another feeling can be just as consuming." Stanley kisses John and gives him a gift. John says he has nothing for him, but eventually gives him some soil from Hell that holds great power. He tells the story of a bird that brings back soil from her travels. ​The second story: Stanley then says he told John that he had lost his parents, and John promised to summon their spirits. Stanley kisses him. John chains Stanley up and whips him. Then, Stanley sees the spirits of his parents, but they blame him, and John mocks him and leaves him. ​The second story is a distortion of the first. It is not the truth; Stanley redefines the past and reconstructs it. That is why Stanley’s shadow and the priest exist in the past in this version, unlike the first narrative. ​In the first story, John forgives Stanley. John speaks of hate and that other emotion, but he does not utter the word "love." ​My interpretation of John's dialogue: Hate is a powerful emotion because it puts the human at the center—only you matter, not the other. but when the power of hate is not used, it is no longer hate, but it is not love either; it is a new feeling—a consuming one (nameless)—that burns you from within. actually,This is the power of hate using you. Here, John was speaking about himself. Unlike Stanley, John did not choose hate, and in the end, no hate remained. So, he did not hate Stanley, but he did not love him either. ​His forgiveness was cold. His gift was poison to Stanley. When he tells the story of the bird, he sends a message to Stanley: "All I have from my journey with you is Hell." This is what angered Stanley. The gift was like a cruel remark—a cold truth. John had nothing more than that for Stanley. When Stanley saw John’s expression of agony, he killed him because he did not want to face his own reflection. He was a man who always played the victim; he enjoyed pain and torture. And John? He didn't give him the torture. What we saw was only a construct of Stanley’s mind to cope with a painful truth. ​Instead of revenge or love, John gave him a cold forgiveness—a human connection, but nothing more. Stanley did not want John’s indifference accompanied by a silent pain; he wanted John to torture him so he could find a reason to hate him. That is why this story was created in his mind, though since he felt guilty, the story was incomplete. The spirits of the parents John never summoned blamed him. So, he faced a painful truth: he could no longer play the victim. John’s caress was worse than any torture. ​When Joey and Graham spoke of Stanley’s desire for pain, John came and stopped the whipping. Joey thought seeing those lashes was new to John, so he stopped it, but simply put, John didn't just go with the flow. Even if the other person wants pain, violence is never justified. So, John gave Stanley what he wanted, but not what he needed. He didn't come to save Stanley; he came to hold a mirror of truth up to him. ​Stanley finally realized he could no longer escape. John gave him what he wanted—forgiveness and human connection—but Stanley killed him for it because John’s forgiveness was not what he expected. ​And John? John was neither an angel nor a demon. He was grey. He probably knew what would happen to Stanley, but perhaps in that room, when he spoke to Stanley, he was honest: there was no hate left (neither love nor hate, nor absolute indifference, but that third, nameless, and new feeling ).​In this story, the line between truth and lie, hate and love, and fantasy and reality becomes blurred. And Stanley was a man who did not believe in purgatory; that is why he forced John into the categories of good and bad.

Me personally I hope they do something more unique with him and don't just make him "edgy " . I'd love a take that focuses on psychological horror stuff like old hellblazer. Or one that plays with his anti hero status a bit either making him more good or bad.

Tales From The Forsaken Phantom is a sci-fi / horror comic book inspired by a lot of diffrent mediums and comics: Hellblazer / Doctor Who / Moon Knight / Blade Runner / Dredd / Resident Evil / Hellboy / Howard the Duck / Cyberpunk 2077 / Altered Carbon and a lot of old horror movies.

Plot:

We follow the mysterious mercenary Ronin Cayne as he makes his way through the galaxy, hunting monsters, catching serial killers all the while he loses more and more faith in mortal life. Even so, there is a small part of him that does try to find some semblance of a purpose to this worthless existence he has been bound to. Which is hard to do in this galaxy for it’s the worst, most pessimistic, dystopian nightmare you could dream off. The good guys don’t win, they die.

This first issue deals with children being snatched off the streets by a crazy scientist who wants to create a so called final cure to end all cures. Ronin Cayne is tasked to investigate the strange disappearances, not because he cares but because he really needed the credits.

I'll have print copies somewhere next week which is going to be so cool.

I know the edit isn’t amazing, but it was a quick thing I put together to visualize it. Matt Smith is great, and I love him in Doctor Who, but seeing the kind of character he plays in House of the Dragon really has me wanting to see him as John. I think he can pull off the attitude brilliantly. Just wanted to share my thoughts on if we ever were to see John in another show or movie on who I think would be great to play him.
