I'm working on a project that aggregates environmental health datasets that are typically spread across multiple agencies (air quality, drinking water regulations, nearby pollution sources, pathogen information, etc.) into a single map interface: mapyourhealth.info

One challenge I've run into is deciding which datasets are actually the most useful to include. There are hundreds of possible environmental indicators, but not all of them are equally valuable in practice.

Hi all :) I currently live in South Africa - where I am being sponsored by a major mining company to continue my studies in Geo Environmental Science. I do however, have a slight interest in Geoinformatics and feel that it may be a better field to grow into. Pursuing Geoinformatics however, would mean accumulating student debt as the company does not sponsor that programme nor do other private bursaries.

What would be the better option?

I should mention that this particular Geoinformatics degree is centered around socio-informatics, which focuses on the use of geographical information technology in the commercial sector.

I’m a 19yo female who has worked in veterinary medicine since I was 16. I’ve considered getting licensed for a while but regardless of how many schools I look into and the research on long term career growth it just doesn’t seem fruitful.

I’ve always had a longing to work in conservation but I’ve always been told that it’s a male dominated industry and is very challenging to get into. After months of consideration and bouncing back and forth between “what if it doesn’t work out” and “what if it does” I’ve decided to take the risk.

I’m starting school for my associates in science next month then planning on transferring to a local larger school to pursue my bachelors in environmental conservation. I’m very familiar with the data collection and field work job opportunities as well as Environmental Sustainability Officer jobs (despite them being few and far between) but I was wondering what other options were available?

My other question is what can I do to become a more ideal candidate for getting into a competitive school for my bachelors?

I know this is a ton of questions but I feel like when I do research online on get stuck going down a rabbit hole and lose focus of my original research intentions.

I’m convinced my ecology professor is very extreme, and I wonder if that’s how normal ecologists think. He is against everything human-made: wetland parks, backyard wildlife ponds, and ecological restoration (even where the seed bank is severely depleted). According to him, planting native plants in a backyard is equivalent to introducing invasive species because it will contaminate the genetics of the original local native plants.

I get that there are so many greenwashing projects here in my country, but is this view really viable?

He seems on verge of explosion when talking about this kind of things as well.

Thought of getting into sustainable management or environmental policy or public health to expand my career options, is any of these gonna be worth it?

There's nothing I am completely hooked into liking in env sadly but anyways I feel like not having much options left so continuing and don't wanna waste the degree I got as well

Too many are finding out that no matter how much they network and put out the umpteen number of applications, the ROI for this profession is a net loss and has been for almost over a decade probably starting since 2018. Plenty of people whether it's with a bachelors to getting a masters from recent graduates to those who've graduated 10yrs ago, still ends up all in the same position. Others tout and beat their chest saying "network network" or "max your skills" which is ironic because the universities ought to have provided said opportunities(as advertised before applying or transferring to university). Accessing additional skills outside of university in of itself is already sparse apart from working the damn job. In other words many are fighting over slim pickings. Students who've graduated had to go through the rigors of doing a capstone feeling proud, only then to have a professor or counselor giving them the talk that many may not make it in this career while in their last few weeks before graduation is baffling. That is very disheartening because as your getting groomed and pumped up by the professors who are playing along in the institutional delusion have to misdirect or reframe to up hold what's keeping them away from obscurity in addition to an abysmal job market. Institutionalists in academia know this but are choosing to gaslight students or those considering this trajectory of 'environmental science". It's much like Kronos-Saturn devouring his young because of the there being no other resolve in order to sustain longevity/stability.

So suppress and lie to others if it's going keeps one's academic career afloat. The irony in which people of environmentalism who are supposedly virtuous and idealistic are essentially deceiving themselves along with curious inquirers. Getting this off my chest, I know I'm not the only one and there are others far smarter and more educated than me that have been experiencing poor outcomes while resenting their trade offs and sacrifices put into this profession only to come out the other side empty handed. Why not just encourage others to volunteer at the park or get active locally within their city counsel as that means something more nowadays even if it doesn't pay?

I've just left college, having studied A-levels in Geology, Biology, Geography and Environmental Science, and, having received an unconditional offer, I'm starting a BSc Environmental Science course next year at a local university. I'm currently doing everything I can do to prepare. I've looked on their website and at the course information, but I can't seem to find a reading list, which I would like to get access to so I can purchase the correct books and resources before I start.

For those who are doing or have done this course or another similar course, which books would it be essential to have? or, where could I get access to a reading list?

I'm good at organising events which I would love to use in my job, and I consider myself a good talker, although it stresses me a bit. I'd love to do some educating, love both working in the field and labs, and if I need to sometimes sit behind the desk at home or in an office, I could do that too

I learn quite fast, especially if I can exercise the knowledge, my biggest passion are birds, but I also love insects and herbs. Something I deeply care about is eradicating invasive species and promoting natives.

I'm an academic in an unrelated field and I'm surprised that I can't find more papers on e.g., how bad for Eastern US ecosystems nandina and porcelain berry actually are, and the few that I can find aren't enough to persuade me to ask my landlords to get rid of all my yard's aesthetically-pleasing nandina.
