Long-term maintenance recommendations for Ecoboost Mustang

  • Buy 2020+ if you can (potentially fixed head gasket issue)
  • Keep it pure stock (engine-wise, and tune-wise)
  • Change engine oil and filters every 5k miles
  • Use a 100% synthetic engine oil
  • Change spark plugs every 25k miles
  • Pump only Premium fuel (for me it's 93)
  • Wait for 10-20 seconds before driving (after cold start)
  • Warm up the engine and transmission to the "green" zone of your gauges (usually 10-15 mins of driving) before going high rpm or boost
  • Monitor cylinder head temperature (CHT) when you drive hard to avoid going above 222F. Let the throttle off if the CHT is approaching this temp
  • Monitor boost gauge to avoid using boost before the engine is warmed up (be gentle on throttle)
  • Wait a few seconds before turning the engine off after hard driving

P.S. Owner of 2020/01/01-registered Ecoboost Premium (non-PP), 10R80, stock, no tune. The only modification on the car is the MBRP Street exhaust. 227k miles

Note on how I drive the car

Full auto (normal mode) until CHT and transmission temps are in the "green" zone. Then regular Sport (shifter in S) until trans warms up fully (above green zone), then I stay in S, or use S+, and at the same time keep the engine rpm above 3.5k using paddles - anything less is boring to drive in my opinion. I do occasional pulls, but not overdo it - I heard that Ecoboost loves high rpm, but not exactly likes boost. I keep it approximately 4-5k rpm all the time, so it's above the boost-effective range (if the CHT reasonably allows me to hold it). Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm not sure this driving style really affected longevity in a good way but it looks like it.

My Build I’ve built an app to share your build

Hi!

I built a web app for car enthusiasts to share your build and explore other builds. Is it something you’d use?

You can share your cars with all your mods. Just paste the link, and the title, image, and category fill in automatically.  You can also share planned mods, fitment details and more.

You can also explore builds, save the mods you find mods.

I want to make this as useful as possible for the car community.

t’s 100% free, no paywalls, no subscriptions. The web app is live, though there’s no mobile version just yet. Still in beta, so if anything breaks, I’d appreciate a heads-up.

I want your feedback. Is this something useful to you? What features would you add? Is this something you'd use?

Thoughts on burble tune?

Upvotes

What do u guys think about the burble tune from ems? Is it a massive risk on the turbo or just some extra wear? Ryan tells me it’s safe but he’s the one selling it lol. I’ve read it’s horrible for the turbo

App won’t unlock car

Upvotes

Anyone else have this problem? I go to the gym, use the app to lock/unlock the vehicle. I’ve been doing this for 2 years, but this is the 2nd time where I come back out and the app absolutely will not communicate with the car. I end up having to use the spare key to get back in. It’s only happened twice, but man is it annoying. Will never use this feature if I’m far from home.

My cluster theme and colors constantly reset to default as well so idk if this is a related software problem or a hardware problem.

AFR when partial throttle??

Hello lads and ladies

My breaking-in stock-tune mustang is not super happy about something when I'm partial throttle and making 10-14psi

It sits around 14.7-15:1 and pulls the timing all the way to 2° or even -0.25°

Anyone have some videos of their cars at around 50% throttle around 3k rpm by chance??? I'm curious as to what it should be...but I'd imagine it needs some fuel enrichment in there somewhere.

I threw in some snippets of logs that I took. Going to data log more today with a raw MAF value also.

The car is bone stock excluding a factory compression built bottom end, a rear muffler delete, and a Tial BOV.

My Build What mods do you guys recommend for my base S650?

Just hit 12,000 miles. I just got the windows tinted so that’s out of the way.

I’m thinking (in order):

  1. Lowering springs
  2. Cold air intake
  3. Blow-off valve?
  4. Intercooler?
  5. Tune after 30,000 miles

What do you guys suggest?

Is this noise normal? Driver's side and whirring/turbine

https://reddit.com/link/1v31meb/video/1cox21fmnoeh1/player

I am coasting in the video which allows the noise to be heard but it is that whirring/turbine like noise and it sounds like it is coming from diver side. I got into a parking lot fender bender and had to change a strut and the radiator :( but now I am tweaking over if this noise is normal or not. I'm going 55mph and coasting. It doesn't change when turning or shifting or accelerating. Just gets a little louder going faster and obviously if i'm not pressing the gas. Am I just a tweaker. I got new tires and I thought it would fix the noise but no

Radiator suggestions

Looking to upgrade the cooling on my ecoboost so I start considering some track days, any suggestions on the better radiator to install to keep head temps below 200?

I have seen this Mustang several times when I'm out and about. I know the general consensus these days is not to add louvers to any part of the car but in my particular area like almost every Mustang I see has them which makes me not want to add any to my current 2018 that's completely stock. Anyway, what is your opinion on this particular car I saw with the side louvers with none on the back? Looking at this car whoever it belongs to it grinds my gears seeing the back tinted window like that and not having it replaced. 😂

I got lucky...so what's next?

Hello all

Recently I posted about an Ecoboom situation on my 2017.

Turned out to be a ring land failure, and didn't scrap the block... somehow.

I ended up doing a DIY budget rebuild, and am 50 miles into the break in.

Callie's Compstar H-beams

Mahle 4032 pistons

King bearings (bimetal mains)

OE Clamping ARP main studs

ARP CA625+ head studs

Balance shaft delete

McLeod RST twin disk

Pocket Port - intake only

Waiting on a CVF street intercooler, and I have a buddy that is interested in modifying a factory intake to add port injection.

Next steps to utilize some of this available potential....

BNR525 or BNR600

With port injection, I'll probably just stick with the CVF street FMIC.

What kind of limitations will I be looking at with the stock head & cams?

The bottom end is capable of 500whp all day long, and I'm willing to bet that the head will be my limiting factor...just looking for.any and all input.

Edit: I'm open to exhaust recommendations as well. I don't have to worry about emission testing here, and want some inspiration for exhaust setups as well. DIY or kit, either I'd love to see and hear

Thanks!

Question Best wheel paint?

Love my ecoboost, but my driving skill wouldn’t show it. Hit some curbs HORRIFICALLY today, thinking I need to sand down curb rash & touch up the wheels. Does anyone know what the best paint paint to use for the 20 inch painted aluminum wheels for a 2026 mustang is? Should I just go with generic aluminum color or is there a specific one?

Do I need a tune

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hey everyone. This is my daily car. I have put 25k miles on it and I bought it only a year ago. Im thinking of doing the following mods
1 CVF intercooler
2 K&N Cold Air Intake
3 CVF Catted Downpipe
4 MBRP Street profile cat back exhaust.
I want to tune it on E85 and on 93 im doing with Ryan at EMS. My question is, Can I daily the car with absolutely no tune at all and also go back to the E85 tune whenever I want to drive the car and have fun? Would I mess up the car if I run it without tune?
