MADness coming from Fantagraphics!

For the last few weeks, I have been spending a lot of time making scans of my original Mad comics for the upcoming massive Mad collection coming from Fantagraphics. It was a pretty big secret for a while, but now that it has been announced in their catalog and the word is out, I think it's safe to give some details. There have been other collections of the Mad comic material, but this one will be the complete Harvey Kurtzman years meaning that it will also include the full contents of magazines #24-30 (this includes Al Feldstein edited issues that had backlog Kurtzman material). It will also, for the first time, have every house ad and paid ad reproduced, so it will be fully complete issues. Last night I had these two bad boys out making detail scans for restorations, and I couldn't help snapping a picture because I love any excuse to get out the original ECs!

Fantagraphics' EC Library: What's Left?

I have collected all but four of Fantagraphics' awesome hardcovers, and will hopefully get the rest in good time. But I am curious since I can't find the information clearly and plainly without spending a lot of time with my glasses on and a notepad...

With My Gun is the Jury, I assume we are done with the artist volumes? And aside from Impact and Aces High, the New Direction titles will be collected more traditionally? Is there any chance of the missing pre-trend content being collected, since it seems like there must be a lot more Al Feldstein stuff at least, even if it's bad I want to read it. Or has Terror Train and The Woman Who Loved Life covered what we are going to get? I mean, I am not even able to read Moon Girl without feeling dumber but I like the art!

I know some of you guys are writers for these books and work for Fantagraphics so this has to be the place to ask since I am off FB now.

Should original EC comics be slabbed?

I don’t have a single comic slabbed. I mostly save comics in bags and boards that I’d like to reread or check out the art again. Finding an original EC for $20 in terrible shape had me wondering about slabbing it. I’d rather use that money for more comics personally.

Probably overpaid a little for this .05, but I already had a Vault 32 so when I came across it I realized I could have both self-censored issues.

It’s not exactly a big secret that I am obsessed with the Big Book, aka Horror Comics of the 1950’s, I have multiple copies from distinguished collections, and they all mean a lot to me.
But none more than this one! There is no Big Book bigger in my heart!
This is Angelo Torres‘s personal copy, signed to him by Bill and Al.
This is of course the book in which his only solo EC story, An Eye for an Eye, premiered after being banned by the arbitrary comics code in 1955. His copy is such a big piece of EC history, and I can’t begin to describe how meaningful it is to me.
HOOHAH!!!

I have to say this was one of the adaptations for the Tales from the Crypt TV show that I enjoyed, and the reason I say that is that there were a lot of them that I didn’t really enjoy!
I’ve always loved how many fans discovered EC because of that show but so many of the adaptations were so far off from the original stories, to the point of being completely unrecognizable in many cases.
My favorites were always the ones that were the truest to the original comic stories, but I also know that people who hadn’t read the comics have their own favorites for multiple reasons - and at the end of the day I just love that so many people discovered the great originals because of that show!

I love the old house ads that appeared in the center spreads of the comics. This one was in Weird Fantasy #6

Not EC But...! Two Harvey Kurtzman paperback books, 1965 and 1961.

That Fun and Games is my original copy, bought at Cheap Charlie's drug store in 1965. Charlie may have been cheap, but he always had a superior selection of comics, paperbacks and magazines.
