Functional Nutrition

Upvotes

Hi all! I'm considering doing the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy course (to be considered an IFNCP). It's VERY expensive (around $5k!!!) so I'm curious if anyone has done it recently, and can tell me if it's worth it and how evidenced based it is.

I'm not sold on functional medicine as a whole - I think I'm mostly curious what this entails for our profession, and how it may create avenues for different schools of thought in regards to treating clients. Feel free to tell me if it's total quackery :)

I work in mental health, which is why I'm interested in learning more.

What tools do you use to review clients’ food logs?

Hi! I'm looking for a better way to view and review my clients’ food logs.

For those who use a food-logging platform with clients, which tool do you use, and would you recommend it? What do you like or dislike about it, and is there anything you wish it could do that it currently can’t?

Thanks in advance!

I need opinions (small rural hospital)

Hi everyone! Just wanted to get some advice/opinions on my current situation.

I recently just took a job as a dietitian at a small/local hospital with 60 beds. When interviewing, the COO discussed with me that she would like me to do inpatient consults. Additionally, she is wanting me to change the menu as this hospital has been experiencing high blood glucose levels. Then eventually start seeing outpatient possibly after being here for a while. It sounds like a lot I know, but I have to meet 56 hrs every 2 weeks for benefits purposes so I need to stay busy. However, consults come in like once or twice a week, which is very low. Per policy, the only time the RD gets a consult is for cases of potential malnutrition. No LOS, diet education, pressure injury, etc. consults… which is concerning.

I have been left with no training from the previous RD. She retired earlier in the year and no longer lives close to the hospital even if I wanted to get in contact with her.

I have been left with a computer full of files/policies and 0 guidance. The hospital is also in a rural area, and the system is very outdated. I’m not even getting consults to pop up. I have no clue how to even put in orders.

While looking through the computer, I keep seeing that the hospital uses the ADA 1800-2100 kcal diet rather than the consistent carb diet. I discussed it with the director of nursing and the dietary manager. The director of nursing is all for it. The dietary manager (who I have been warned about) pretty much just shut me down and said the doctors won’t like it (?). And I don’t want this to sound judgmental, but the dietary manager is not a dietitian nor does she have much education.

I know this post is kinda all over the place, but SOS I need advice!! I would like to see this job out as I will only be here part time with benefits… and it’s close to my house. There’s just a lot going on in my brain hahah

Update: just found out that there’s no SLP and that there is no MST or MNA screening done… I have no clue how the RD managed this place for 30 years

Monitoring for refeeding in the outpatient setting.

Outpatient RDs- how do you monitor for refeeding in the outpatient setting for a patient with a newly-placed feeding tube? They are often not in the hospital for long, so you are not able to monitor labs daily. Or do you leave it to the inpatient team?

Seeking Advice: Choosing an MSDI Program When You Plan To Move Cities Afterwards

Hi everyone,

I am currently going into my senior year in the Dietetics major and am currently based in Michigan. For many years, I have planned to move to NYC after school. I am originally from MI, moved to Chicago for a while and loved being in a city, but moved back to MI for school. While currently researching MSDI programs to apply to, I am completely overwhelmed about what to do.

I really want to act wisely with my finances and not move to NYC while having to work that full-time unpaid internship for several months, thus draining my savings. But, at the same time, I am not close to NYC at the moment, and I really want to establish myself there in some way.

I have a few ideas, but am seeking some advice/opinions from those who have gone through something similar, or are maybe even thinking it through themselves. I know there isn't exactly a "right" or "wrong", but here are some of my thoughts:

  1. Apply to an online master's degree program in MI and look to do most of my rotations in more affordable areas, but aim to do a few weeks of rotations in NYC
  2. Apply to an online master's degree program in NYC and do most of my rotations outside of NYC, but obviously a few inside the city (for anyone who knows some programs that offer something like this, would you please drop them in the comment section?)
  3. Attend my MSDI program fully outside of NYC but actively try to virtually network as much as possible while attending my program
  4. Look for a way to do a domestic study away in NYC for senior year or the summer before my Master's program begins

Any additional ideas are super appreciated!! I will be chatting with my advisor soon, but I surely thought people on this forum have been in similar situations. For those of you who wanted to move but maybe share a similar sentiment about wanting to save money, what are your strategies? Thank you in advance!!

Believe I should add: I have looked into a few online M.S. programs in NYC, and they charge an online distance learning rate/credit hour for their program, which many look to be cheaper options/credit hour compared to some of the programs in Michigan in-person. Additionally, when considering some rotations in NYC, I did not plan on staying longer than about a month if doing a rotation site there. I hope that is some helpful additional info!

Career as a dietitian.

I want to get my B.S in biology and become a dermatologist, but a family member of mine keeps insisting I do Nutrition. They at eating how many ears you could specialize in and that money isn’t everything. I do know that money isn’t everything but you will still be miserable if you do all the schooling and can’t afford to pay your bills.

What are the pros and cons of becoming a dietitian and what is the pay like and work schedule?

Paying for Masters in dietetics at Russell sage college.

I was just informed that by admissions that I was accepted in the applied Nutrition and dietetics program at Russell Sage college. They told me that they do not offer financial aid for the program. How did you guys pay for it? Did you guys get a loan or are there any scholarships that I can apply to?

rd to pa thoughts/advice?

hello!!

any RDs to PA-C's here who would be willing to share reasons for switch? currently in my masters for RD (sports nutr emphasis) but increasingly interested in more clincial side (after my hopital rotation earlier this year) of things. considering doing clinical dietetics for a few years to get PCE hours to apply to PA school. not sure if i see myself as a clinical dietitian for the rest of my life, BUT a big part of that is money. besides money, what are reasons people made the switch? like for example, what did your personal statement to PA school look like? looking to find some other meaning i might explore this besides more clinical say and better pay! wondering if others have had niche experiences they would be willing to share. on the other hand, if you were considering it and had a reason to stay RD (besides cost/time of PA school), please share! would love to hear people's thoughts and experiences. also, if there is a better thread for this, lmk!

Masters Discussion Help

Hi All, I was planning on getting an MPH degree in melbourne, however i have come to realise the job market in Australia is shit. (As is everywhere, in every field)

  1. I have a bachelors in biotech engineering, i am super interested in working in public health, social angle (humanitarian assistance, maternal and child health and vaccines) and learning more in this domain.

  2. I want to know from Public health officers who work in health promotion, how is the job market? what are other niches in PH that are often overlooked but well-paid!

  3. Should i be doing a masters in dietetics instead? Should i just become an RD? again super saturated market but is it a better and more rewarding job as compared to MPH? i love interacting with people and working in clinical settings so maybe this will also make sense to me. Later maybe can transition into online RD diet counselling? please RDs in Australia pitch in. what are some things i need to know before deciding to do Dietetics

All answers are much appreciated and welcome. I need to figure this out before i join a course and waste 2 years and lots of money. Thanks!

Monthly pay - rant

Today, I started a brand new job in home enteral infusion. While in orientation, we were walked through timekeeping and I was told to fill out the biweekly timesheet. My manager later emailed me to inform me that I am in fact a monthly pay employee, rather than biweekly. I feel a bit cheated/frustrated for a few reasons:

  1. Nowhere in the interview, offer, or on-boarding communications was it mentioned that I would be put on a monthly pay schedule.

  2. The person running orientation placed me in the wrong payroll orientation group so now I have to figure out how my timekeeping works on my own time. The health system is am under has a very convoluted timekeeping system thats different for just about everyone.

  3. I have never been anything but biweekly pay. I will have to either learn to budget or suffer the debt.

Personally, I don't think monthly pay should ever be a thing. I don't understand how anyone ever thought this was a good idea.

Otherwise, I'm content with the salary, benefits, and that I am under a union. I'm just frustrated at this major flaw in an otherwise golden opportunity.

Rant over. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Clinical 30 hours/week?

Right now I'm a full time salaried employee at a hospital doing adult and pediatric inpatient clinical work. We are having our second baby later this year and I'm considering cutting my hours. Our insurance is through my workplace because my husband is a stay at home dad / self employed house renovator. If I drop down to 60-75% FTE, I earn significantly less and benefit premiums double. If I work 75-80% FTE, the premiums are the same as they are right now, but I'll just earn less. The minimum I could work (75% FTE) would be 30 hours/week if I'm understanding the paperwork correctly (haven't talked to HR yet). I'm curious if others work 30-32 hours a week inpatient and how you structure your days/hours/time?

Resources for new NICU RDs

Starting my first RD job as a NICU RD. Any and ALL resources help! Also any advice on creating excel sheets for calculations (I’ve heard it’s a great idea but I’m not really sure where to start, which calculations I’ll even need, etc). Honestly a master list of all calculations that NICU RDs need to know would be amazing😊

Appropriate time to tell patients you’re changing jobs?

I do telehealth counseling and this is my first time quitting an RD job. I have a caseload of about 45 patients. My start date for my new job is in September. When should I tell my patients that I’m quitting? I see patients weekly, biweekly, and some even monthly. I just want to make sure I’m not leaving them high and dry!

Sodexo Dietetic internship Tuition relief

Hi everyone,
I’m looking into the Sodexo Dietetic Internship and a few others of course. I read that they give tuition subsidy for interns in exchange for a two year working commitment.
Can someone who has completed this program give insight on their experience?
Also, where does the working commitment take place?? Clinical, school nutrition, Food service? Does it matter??

I don’t have any rapport with the company, however. I checked the career tab on the website and they have job opens near me! So I wouldn’t mind committing myself if that means I can do my DI for free!

Thanks

Let’s talk greens type supplements?

I’m specifically thinking of the freeze dried, whole food supplements including super greens blends and mixed berries blends and things.

My grant is diabetes but a lot of my clients are elderly so the MIND diet has been coming up lately. I was discussing this with my aging parents and they asked about the powdered supplements for the foods that can’t figure out how to get every day.

I gave them my “the whole food is better but a quality supplement with independent lead testing can bridge the gap. It can be a decent way to include foods someone is picky about and won’t otherwise get” spiel.

It’s been a while since I’ve evaluated my stance on this though. Any updated recommendations or concerns with these types of supplements?

1099 job questions

I work for a woman as a 1099 contractor. I honestly feel like I’m expected to do a lot of work outside of what I’m paid for. I also receive texts for hours on my days off; how would you set boundaries on that?

Also, are any other 1099 contractors expected to do work for free? At what point do I say I have a kid and I simply don’t have the time or support to do all of the admin etc without payment?
The admin is also very specific and if it’s not done JUST the way she wants, we have a meeting about it and I have to go and “correct” everything.

Pay increases

How have you guys been negotiating pay increases? Our teams raises this year were not great (inpatient clinical). Any strategies? Competetors are paying a minimum, entry level RD roughly $2000 more than what our team is getting paid (i am 5 years tenured, colleagues are about 1-3 years tenured). Central FL if that helps
