Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Discussion Swapping Duet 5 for Dragonfly Elite

Hi all,

Bought a Duet 5 as my first Chromebook about two years ago, use it daily as a backup for work but the keyboard and using it on my lap and car drives me nuts.

Selling it and got a 16gb dragonfly elite refurbished for really cheap, should be here tomorrow😀

Anyone have any ideas what devices if any are gonna be eligible for Aluminium when it comes out? Happy to buy a Googlebook if I need to but would be sweet if the dragonfly makes the list.

Discussion Lenovo 300e 2nd Gen is EOL

It felt like yesterday when I got this thing but it's hit it's last upgrade.

Which is a shame, as ChromeOS has grown so much since I first tried it on a Samsung Chromebook 3 I got for Black Friday. I always have a habit of getting YEARS old Chromebooks to use as my daily driver.

I intend to keep using it, without Extended Support, until the system ultimately stops working for me on the apps I use it for. But for now I've enjoyed the ride. To anyone else who has a Treeya 300e. My hats off to you.

Troubleshooting Wifi on Chromebook always cutting off and needing to restart

Helloo, I've been experiencing issues with the wifi on my chromebook for almost a month now, the wifi keeps shutting off or disconnecting, and the only way to reconnect to it is by restarting my device, sometimes multiple times before it finally works. I'm the only one in my house that's experiencing issues with the wifi, so I think it's a problem on my Chromebook maybe? I've tried to forget my home wifi and reconnect to it (tried that at least twice). I also tried unplugging my home router, but none of that worked. It's a really annoying issue since sometimes when i'm using my chromebook and the wifi stops working, I have to restart it and lose stuff I was writing, and my chromebook is slow because it needs to restart every tab that was opened and every app, which makes it all super laggy and slow.

Does anybody know what I could possibly do?

News How to create a bootable USB on an old Chromebook (ChromeOS 93 or older)

If you have an older Chromebook and can’t use Chrome extensions like Chromebook Recovery Utility to create a bootable USB (for example, to install MrChromebox), you can use Crosh instead, as long as you have access to shell (such as in Developer Mode).

Steps
Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open Crosh.
2. Type:

shell

Plug in your USB drive.
Find your USB device:

lsblk

Write the ISO to the USB drive:

sudo dd if=/path/to/your.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress oflag=sync

Replace /dev/sdX with your USB device (for example, /dev/sdb).

Important: Do not use a partition such as /dev/sdb1. Use the entire device (/dev/sdb), as this command will erase everything on the USB drive.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions, problems, or suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.

Troubleshooting This has been going on for the past hour is this normal?

Post image

UPDATE: I found the issue, I just needed to restart my Chromebook

I updated my Chromebook around an hour ago, and usually after the update most apps on my Chromebook would have this screen for a few minutes, and then the app would go back to normal, but this is different, as after an hour none of my downloaded apps I have finished starting are there. Is there anything to do to fix this, or will I have to wait for a while?

PS: I'm not good at describing stuff, so it may sound a bit confusing, so sorry about that.

Buying Advice Chromebook Plus suggestions for college classes

I'm taking online classes and I'm going to try using a Chromebook as I am tired of windows and Microsoft. I still have my laptop just in case I do need windows.

I'm looking at the Asus and Lenovo Chromebook Plus sold on Walmart. I prefer them having at least 8 gigs of RAM hence those two. Thought about Acer, but I'm having second thoughts regarding their build quality. I'm open to any suggestions.

Buying Advice 11" N100 chromebooks: when will fleet users start selling these off?

I am shopping for an Intel N100-based laptop with 8GB RAM, in the 11" form factor. While nobody makes one today, Lenovo and HP made them until very recently. They just happen to be Chromebooks, which is fine with me. The N100 has the right performance characteristics for a machine I'm going to pull out mostly for personal use and occasional quick ssh connections and web-based devops and ChromeOS is also fine for those things. So I was all set to buy a Lenovo 100e or an HP Fortis 11".

However, the price to get a "renewed" or "remanufactured" one holds pretty steady at around $350 with 8GB of RAM. Right now I guess that's at least close to fair, because they are not outrageously old (the 100e 4th gen went on the market in February 2023), but it's annoying that you can pay only $300 for a *larger* brand new one, even though I want a remanufactured small one 😄

You can find a few eBay and Amazon reseller listings for much less, like $160, but I tried purchasing one and got burned: it was still enrolled to an organization. I returned it of course.

I assume that at some point a flood of these will crop up legitimately after they are de-enrolled by the schools and organizations that mostly own them. And then the price will drop.

I'm sure some of you are with schools and other organizations that use these... what's the life cycle like? When might I see them legitimately on the secondhand market in numbers?

Thanks!

Buying Advice Regarding buying the Lenovo Chromebook 14 plus.

I want to buy a Chromebook, and I'm confused about the Lenovo Chromebook 14 Plus, which is available for $649 at Best Buy. Or should I wait for the upcoming Googlebook?

I'm guessing the Googlebook will be priced around $1000+

Should I go with Lenovo Chromebook 14 Plus, considering it would get the upcoming Aluminum OS update or should I wait?

Troubleshooting School Chrome book help!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Haii, I’m an upcoming Senior and my school has provided me with a Chromebook since Freshman year and I’m planning on returning it on the first day of school especially given I’ve got my own computer and my school allows me to use it

My problem is however, is that suddenly it won’t cut on and it’s blinking and I’m praying it didn’t break on me since that means I’ll have to buy the school one and I don’t have that money.

Two things to note:

- one: that is not the original charger as the one I had was stolen from me around Sophomore year why hadn’t I gotten a new one? My school was being effy about it so I just been using my friends/ teachers the charger in the vid is my friend’s
&
- two: how long as it not been charged? The whole summer what type of Chromebook? I have zero clue our school of handed them to us around 7th grade and told us that for now on instead of using textbooks and such we’d be using our own Chromebooks

If a solution in a refresh button I don’t have one of the keyboard unfortunately.

Buying Advice Chromebook recommendation

Hi! This is probably the hourly "what Chromebook should I buy?" post but I genuinely appreciate any help!

Lightly I have been thinking of purchasing a Chromebook. I have a gaming laptop I bought in 2022 and it has been great, but I rarely play games and I don't really look at large 3d models for work anymore. I use my phone for 95% of my computer use but looking for something a little more convenient for that last 5% than my big old gaming laptop and brick of a charger.

I would mostly be using it for invoicing and banking stuff for work, as well as general internet-ing. I also work out of town once in a while, a week or so at a time and although I rarely play video games, something I can stream my Xbox to would be cool once in a while.

I would prefer something on the smaller side, definitely not full size laptop size

Something faster, I really don't like slower computers and waiting on basic shit.

decent battery life ( that being said my current laptop since new has had about 1.5 hours so anything is better than that) so I'd be happy to lean on this a bit

Also one odd thing I dunno if I could ever get on a Chromebook, let alone a small one is a number pad would be nice but not super critical

I dunno I'm not really a computer guy, I'm not brand biased, I just want something nice that will last a while.

Thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting Partially unresponsive chromebook (help needed)

So i just recently received an old chromebook from a friend, to be specifically an HP Chromebook 14 G5.

The main issue i have with it is, pressing the power button nothing happens, pressing reset+power button flashes the LED near the charging port once and then does nothing...

I can get into the recovery screen which i took advantage of and tried flashing a fresh chrome os on it... Sadly that yielded no results

I also tried getting into the dev mode but the keyboard on the laptop decided to be unresponsive. When i connect a keyboard via usb i can get into the dev mode screen but due to the "security features" can't enter the thing....

I admit i did use ai and search a dozen of websites + google support + hp support to try and figure out what's wrong but to no avail.

At this point i believe the device is bricked but I don't want to jump to any conclusions, even less opening up the thing.

Troubleshooting Chromebook stops making sound, then works again a couple days later (Reposting cause I need this to be fixed)

So sometimes when I try logging out, my chromebook just restarts itself. I wouldn't have a problem with that, but like half the time when it does that, my sound just stops working. The sound buttons don't work, except for the mute button. The mute icon stays and the sound bar just becomes gray, I can't even click on the mute button to unmute, it just doesn't work for some reason. Then, usually two days later, but sometimes less then a minute and sometimes a whole week, it just works again. Everytime this happens, I constantly restart my chromebook because sometimes it makes it work again after restarting. And very rarely, my sound gets stuck at max volume, even though the sound bar does work, forcing me to restart it again which usually leads to my first problem. This is becoming increasingly annoying, please help 😢 (Thanks in advance)

Troubleshooting Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 Charging Issue

It seems that only the left usb-c charges and the light turns on, but the right side used to but no longer works. When I plug it in on the right side, it shoes the power is connected, but cannot give a battery estimate of when it will finish charging.

I tried multiple hard resets and still does not seem to work. Is there another solution besides sending it in?

Discussion Problema no Chromebook GO 11 (XE310XDA)

Hoje consegui iniciar meu Chromebook normalmente.
