Saw a post in another metal sub asking for band recommendations without blasphemous or gory lyrics. One of the replies linked to here. Been poking around here off n on for a few days to learn about bands and the various views of people in here.
The original post got me thinking though, and I kept coming back to the same question. Why does it matter? If you are comfortable enough in your beliefs, why would it matter if a song is blasphemous? Especially if you're into the more extreme subgenres where you generally can't understand the vast majority of the lyrics anyway?
I listen to a lot of death metal, so blasphemy and gore come up a lot. In the imagery, the lyrics, sometimes even in the band name. But just because Cannibal Corpse for example has violent lyrics, doesn't mean I'm violent. If a song is about murdering I'm not suddenly going to become a murderer. I'm about as non violent as you can get. I just like the way it sounds. And in the case of people in the band or the band as a whole are bad people, I separate the art from the artist and don't support them financially (bootlegs/piracy)
Looking around here it seems opinions vary. Some are like the post that brought me here, where they do not want anything blasphemous in the lyrics. Some don't seem to care too much. But in general the vast majority seem to care in some way shape or form. So I ask the sub as a whole to get as many opinions as I can. Why does it matter if a band is blasphemous or violent/gory lyrics? Is this just my ignorance on the subject? Are some denominations more strict on stuff like this, leading to the varying opinions I see?
