Big Casio AE-1200 Customizer Update: Color Polarizers, Top/Bottom Negative LCDs, and More

Post image
76 Upvotes

Hey everyone 👋

Just shipped a big and long-awaited update to the AE-1200 customizer on MODDS.WATCH.

A fully customizable display, and all the display elements and symbols are now fully adjustable.

You can now flip the LCD between four states instead of the old positive/negative toggle:

Completely positive – the classic clean look

Top negative – just the upper segment inverted

Bottom negative – just the lower segment inverted

Full negative – the whole display goes dark

So if you've ever wanted that half-inverted "split polarizer" mod without cracking your watch open and swapping the film, you can preview exactly how it looks first.

Color Polarizer is the part I'm most excited about. Two color controls:

Symbols color – recolor the face symbols all at once. Which elements it touches adapts to the display state you're in, so it stays consistent with the polarization.

Display color – tint the actual LCD layer that's currently visible. Pick any color you want.

Both tools also have a small reset button in the top-right corner if you want to snap back to defaults and start over.

Try now: https://www.modds.watch/en/lab/casio/base/casio-ae1200

Would love to see what color/polarizer combos you all come up with. Drop your mods 👇

Building a global free directory for watch modders on modds.watch

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a project called MODDS.WATCH, a free community-backed builder for watch modders, and I recently added a feature that I think could be useful for the community: a Global Database of Modders.

The idea is pretty simple: I wanted to create a central place where clients can actually find people based on their location, the brands they specialize in, and follow their social links.

It’s completely free to join. If you want to be included, you just head to the homepage and hit the "Global Database of Modders" button to add your info.

There is a Patreon tier ("WATCH MODDER") if you’re looking to pin your card to the top or customize the background, plus support the project, but the main goal is just to get a solid, searchable directory going for everyone.

Hope this helps some of you get your work out there a bit more. Let me know what you think!

Really appreciate your support

Snagged an A1100D on sale after wanting one for a while. It's solid and the case finishing is great, but the bracelet and hairy arms don't mix well. I put an Anchor Strap Co Deployant Nylon on it, and I'm extremely pleased with the combo.

This is a custom AE1200 STN with green shift, no gel filters were used to make this.

Hot take: 3d printed faceplates still don’t look good/finished.

Just made my first 3d printed Casio Royale faceplate, so I could recreate it in white.

You know what? I don’t like it. Not talking about refinement, I can improve that. I refer to the large areas of blankness, flat feel, and face texture. It’s missing something, and Casio did well with its text and round window graphic.

Prove me wrong so I don’t give up on this technique.

Show off your 3d printed faces!

mod Artemis II Mod

I’ve shared this one before, but wanted to catalog it in my timeline of mods.

This was my first mod using colored filters. I don’t think this would have been as successful if [u/JellyLabLuke](u/JellyLabLuke) didn’t have videos of himself working through so many of his builds. It was easy to follow along with some 3M tape, Rodico to snag any dust, and otherwise it’s a solid, simple build.

I think that might be why so many people start with the space mods: it has enough pieces to feel a bit complex, and yields a well put together build in the end. The sense of accomplishment is out of this world!

The custom gradient is designed to resemble the exhaust fume of a rocket, based on his SpaceX Starship Staff Watches.
The moon decal is in lieu of the Artemis II mission around the Moon.
Then, there was this cool star decal I’d seen on one of Luke’s builds, that I added to the Alarm/Mute window.

I love the colors!
As with my other builds, I swapped the LED’s to a warm white, which I feel compliment the overall aesthetic nicely. Like spotlights on the launchpad, illuminating the rocket flames at takeoff.

If only I could find a way to make the moon actually 3D, so it’d have some depth to it.

In the coming builds, I start to bring my own creativity to each project, and they just keep getting more and more exciting!

Filters - JellyLab Watches
• Exhaust fume gradient - $9 (custom order)
• Moon - $9 ($12 at posting)
• Star Decal - $9 (custom order)

LF-20 Gradient

A popular color-wave for this watch, and I completely agree. I needed one myself, as it's the perfect summer watch!

It took me some time to get this done, it's not as popular of a watch as others, so its details aren't as easy to find.

So the thing is, the watch face isn't square. Due to the hard-to-notice asymmetry in the black/gray border the digital face is closer to 20mm length and 19mm height. I kept the dimensions of the print at 25mmx25mm so it would properly fit in place behind the built-in black/gray border (although I probably could've done slightly smaller, probably 24x24, but I figured easier to cut off ~1mm than to be too short)

I used Inkscape, since it's free

I had five nodes total for the gradient. One node at the top, one node offset at 0.23, the middle one at 0.50, then 0.77, and the last at the bottom. The top two nodes are the same color, and the bottom two nodes are the same color. This helps to make sure the richest of your colors don't get blocked by the built in border.

Once I had my colors locked in, the hard part was getting the lightness just right. I ended up with the lightness around 65% for the middle color, and at 44% for the other nodes. I tried a 35% lightness and that also came out well, just a little too dark. But anything between would probably be great, depending on preference or final color choice.

I was lucky enough to find a local place willing to print a few samples of each color/darkness for only $5 per pdf. I went with a UV print on a clear cover film. 100% opacity. This would work with LaserJet, one of my test runs had a LaserJet sample. But the fluidity and opacity just looks better with UV.

I didn't use any double sided tape. Between the perfect fit and it being UV print... I just don't think it's necessary in this build.

Next up: I think this watch would look great with a more "wintery" night sky gradient.

royale Titanium cases with sapphire crystal for the AE-1200?

I've been looking around for a titanium case with a sapphire crystal for the Casio AE-1200, but I'm getting mixed answers.

I've seen a few people mention that titanium cases exist, but I've also come across quite a few comments saying that only stainless steel and bronze cases are actually available on the market.

I know SKXMOD has some great options, but unfortunately that's not really an option for me because of shipping and availability where I live.

Does anyone know if titanium AE-1200 cases with sapphire crystal are actually being sold anywhere?

If you've bought one or know of a reliable website or seller, I'd really appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

Even if they're from a smaller seller or a less well-known site, I'd be interested in checking them out.

watch shot A168WEM-1EF with a positive display swap – How Casio should have shipped it

I picked up a Casio A168WEM-1EF during a sale and loved the smoky faceplate and bracelet, but I just couldn't get along with the factory negative display. It looked great in photos, but I found it difficult to read in everyday use.

So I swapped in an STN positive display that I originally bought from AliExpress for another project, and I honestly think it completely transforms the watch.

The combination of the STN display and the smoked crystal works much better than I expected. It's significantly easier to read, the viewing angles are excellent, and it still keeps that stealthy, monochrome look. To me, it almost looks like something Casio could have released as a factory variant.

I've included a comparison with my F-105 as well. The F-105 is still a bit crisper, but I'm really impressed with how well the STN display works behind the tinted lens.

I'm genuinely surprised by how much I like it now—I can easily see this becoming one of my daily-wear Casios.

What do you think? Do you prefer the original negative display, or would you make the same swap?

What Casio model deserves more attention?

There are a lot of popular Casios that everyone talks about, but I'm interested in the models that don't get enough recognition.

What Casio do you think has a great design, features, or modding potential but is overlooked by most people?

Share the model and explain why you think it deserves more attention.

I'm always looking for interesting watches I might not have discovered yet.

Finally finished my AE-1200WH stainless steel case mod.

Really happy with how it turned out, it completely changes the look and feel of the watch while keeping the classic Casio Royale design.

I was also thinking about trying it with a brown leather strap. Has anyone here done this combination before? If so, how does it look? Would love to see some pictures or hear your opinions.

Here’s my watch for reference:
