VIDEO/PODCAST Capoeira Unshackled: A Conversation with Dr. Matthias Assunção on the History of Capoeira

This episode centers on Dr. Matthias Assunção’s research into capoeira’s history and martial arts studies more broadly. Assunção explains how capoeira myths developed over time, particularly misconceptions such as enslaved people using their feet to defend themselves because their hands were shackled. He explained that capoeira's African origins are clear, but it was developed in Brazilian port cities rather than on plantations and emphasized that the art form can be used for both resistance and oppression. This episode also addresses the globalization of capoeira, including debates about singing songs in languages other than Portuguese and how the art form has been adapted in different countries, and the continued debate over capoeira's professionalization in Brazil.

Was really curious on other variations of movements in capoeira outside the Ginga. For the past few months, I took to learning them and naturalizing it to further incorporate my knowledge on the old carioca style with my contemporary capoeira school. (all the way in the UK but I'm really figuring it out from here after daily hourly practices on the style.).

For those who don't know. apparently in Old Rio style capoeira. there were various stances and movements completely unique to capoeiragem. possibly due to capoeiragem being a special style in the region and each person growing their own variant, although there were consistent techniques displayed.

examples include: escorpião, A guarda (defensive movement)

and lastly. peneiracao.

From what I've observed and experienced. peneiracao: With Ginga, it was the popularized base evasive movement in capoeiragem. focusing on circling, tactical footwork. more centered to frequently breaking rythms and alternating to various technqiues.)

the videos above depict the techniques from old, archived and modern visuals.

Kind of curious of witness accounts/ practitioners of this. Would be grateful for any, tips offered when staging it for techniques.

I would like to clarify, I'm open to every aspect of capoeira and would not dare to think one thing stands over the other because it's more "efficient" or whatever amuses roundabout stereotypes.

I'm objectively very open-minded on any martial art/culture I practice. capoeira is no different.

Would appreciate any insight, thanks.

Hi everyone,

I’m deaf and interested in starting capoeira, but I know there is a lot of music related in capoeira. Is capoeira deaf friendly? Did you guys had any experience training with deaf students in capoeira?

Thank you!

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Mestre Koyoti explains why violence in the roda must be avoided. And that kicks must be marked and not hit. And that if it is to use violence protection is necessary.

I agree with everything he says. Yet you can see in the comments here and there one saying, "Oh its because he marked the martelo, thats a provocation." Nonsense.

Imo, capoeira is a martial art made for physical and psychological conditioning to escape as a slave, which was forbidden to do as a slave unless you mask it as a ritual/dance.

It is hard for me to believe that the slaves were actually fighting to hit and hurt each other. If that was the case, wounds and injuries would quickly get the attention of the masters.

I need capoeira to feel better after long days of work where you deal with egos and stressful situations, it won't work if after all of that, i have to deal with more egos and nonsense.

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Best way or routine to extremely improve in capoeira

Hi guys! Im doing capoeira for 8 months now, and I love it so much. However im not really happy how bad I am at it. I can do basic kicks and stuff but it all looks pretty bad still. Also my balance is horrible, and when I see other people playing I just feel like I want to be able to do that as well. (I know they all trained longer and stuff but still)

So I came to the conclusion I should probably train more. Im thinking of doing an extra training day at a different group (because my group only has a second training on a day i need to work) so that I do it two times a week instead of one. (Is this allowed or should you stay at one group?)

I really want to improve a bit faster and also learn acrobatics because that is something I really want to be able to do, and i hope this helps, however if you have any other tips on improving faster please let me know!!

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Capoeira hair tips

Long haired capoeiristas… how do you wear your hair to train?
My hair is at that awkward length where I can tie it back, but my ponytail constantly gets in my face (it’s almost waist length).
The flyaways are driving me insane (I’m neurodivergent, so it’s a huge sensory distraction).
I’m experimenting with braids, but… let’s just say my braiding skills suckkkkk.
What hairstyles actually stay put through a full class and roda? Any tips or products you’d recommend?
Thx!

Note: wavy/ curly leaning hair (lots of it)

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Trying to start a capoeira community in La Romana, Dominican Republic

Has anyone here successfully built a capoeira group from scratch?
I’m trying to organize a free weekly training group in La Romana. There aren’t any active academies nearby, so my goal is simply to bring together anyone interested in practicing.
I’d love to hear what worked (or didn’t) when you were building a community.

HELP REQUEST Ajuda para identificar capoeirista

Thumbnail

alguém consegue me ajudar?

https://agendacapoeiragem.com/app

Qualquer sugestão, crítica ou ideia é muito bem-vinda. A proposta é construir isso junto com a comunidade de Capoeira.

QUESTIONS/DISCUSSION Why do you think there are comparatively so few women mestres in capoeira?

I’m researching this question for an essay, and my goal isn’t to make an argument or prove a point. it’s to better understand the topic.
I’m not looking for a single “correct” answer. I’m interested in hearing different perspectives, whether they’re based on history, personal experience, or observations from the capoeira community.
I’d love to hear from everyone, but I’m especially interested in the experiences and perspectives of women. Particularly mestras, contramestras, instructors, and long time practitioners.
What do you think has contributed to this, if anything?
