Question Clannad Was Great. Clannad: After Story Was Ethereal

Post image
209 Upvotes

I recently finished Clannad and Clannad: After Story, and I honestly think the difference between the two is fascinating.

Clannad was genuinely good. It was a beautiful story about friendship, loneliness, healing, and the small moments that make life meaningful. It was unique in the sense that it was a slice of life, emotional, supernatural, and had many different story arcs. It had this warm feeling to it; like sitting in a quiet classroom after school, walking home with someone you care about, or slowly realizing that the people around you have become your family.

It was a story about finding connections.

However, Clannad: After Story felt like it transcended into a realm of storytelling I never knew existed.

It stopped being just a romance story and became a story about life itself. Growing up, leaving behind the comfort of youth, dealing with responsibility, building a family, experiencing loss, and trying to keep moving forward even when life becomes unbearable.

The part where it showed Tomoya turned into his father, the very person he hated, was heartbreaking. When Tomoya reconnected with Ushio and they cried together, my heart melted.

I only like 100% happy endings and that's it. I don't like bittersweet, sad, or 50/50 endings. This story could've been a great story but a tragedy but it turned out to be a great story with a happy ending. I'm glad that everyone, and I mean literally everyone got their happy ending.

What makes After Story so powerful is that it understands that happiness is meaningful because it is fragile. The reason the joyful moments hit so hard is because the series makes you understand exactly what is at stake.

Despite all the pain, it never feels like a story about despair. It feels like a story about the strength of love and the resilience of people.

The first season made me appreciate the beauty of ordinary moments.

After Story made me appreciate life itself.

Clannad: After Story is one of those rare works that stays with you.

Clannad was great.

But Clannad: After Story was ethereal.

Spoiler Game still worth playing with spoilers? Spoiler

I know Nagisa dies, Tomayo's sister is illegitimate, and there is sword fighting in some arcs. Hopefully not everything has been spoiled but I was wondering if these are the defining moments that make it memorable?

Spoiler I feel so bad for those who haven’t finished the anime entirely Spoiler

Imagine watching episode 16 of After Story and thinking Nagisa really is dead. Only to realize, that was in that timeline. The newer one is where she is alive and made it through childbirth and her sickness. Anyways, I’m saying this because I believed she was dead for good and having only known episode 16 when I was 12, says a lot about me then. I had never watched any other anime other than Pokemon or Bakugan (at least in the first season) and my knowledge of anime as a whole was not well known.

Question Why is Kotomi's hair purple when her parents have both black and brown hair respectively?

Post image

I mean hair logic wise I think this is the only outlier considering Nagisa's hair lining up with her parents and Tomoya's being a wild card with how we don't really know his mum/moms hair colour.

Clannad Does anybody have a route tutorial for Japanese?

I tried playing through naked and presumably ended on a bad route, where Tomoya (?) is in the Illusionary world with the girl in the snow, after going back to his family home and 'giving up'.

Any sort of link will work, as long as it tells me which choices in Japanese. Thank you in advance

Question I bought Clannad a year ago and never played it past prologue, should I watch it or play it?

Asking as I have kind of stopped reading VNs in general and I am not sure if I will not drop it like I dropped CHAOS;HEAD at the very end of it (good VN btw).

On one hand apparentely the VN is better but on the other the gifs from the anime seem funny which can be credited to it being animated.

I could theoretically try reading it and watch anime instead if it won't hook me in enough for binge reading sessions.

Would like thoughts from you guys.

Kyou This was sad

I’m already on episode 19 and that last one was pretty hard to watch in that last part. Seeing how everyone realized Nagisa and Tomoya loved each other so much is so heartbreaking because how Kyou and Ryou reacted. they both loved him and I understand that it crushed them to learn he was into another girl

Clannad Update

I am officially 17 episodes into Clannad and I have 8 episodes till I’m finished with the show. here’s my opinions so far.

so far my favorite characters are Fuko, Nagisa, Kotomi, and Tomoya. I usually get really excited (pause) whenever Fuko makes a cameo in an episode because I kinda miss her.

anyway one of my favorite arcs so far is the Kotomi arc. it was really sad and beautiful and it made me ship Kotomi and Tomoya (is that ridiculous to say?)

anyways more updates soon.

Kind of an appreciation thread for Tomoya as he is one of my most favourite protagonists, so feel free to give your reasons on what makes him stand out from the other protagonists in anime

Discussion What happens to Nagisa in the other routes?

Does she stay a platonic friend to Tomoya, likely stays healthy (due to no pregnancy), but remains stagnant in her personal growth? My favorite route is Tomoyo's, and I am reading her route in the manga (Tomoyo Dearest) which is the adaptation of Tomoyo's route in the VN which I find quite enjoyable. I see that Nagisa is in Tomoyo's route, but was wondering what you all think how she ends up living her life since Tomoya chose Tomoyo, or even the other heroines depending on which of the other routes is your favorite.

Please share your thoughts on how Nagisa lives her own life since Tomoya didn't choose her because I'm just so intrigued by this possibility.
