Should try to engage in the comments section (don't have to reply to every comment, mind, but participate in the discussion)
Write their thoughts about what they watched (we are not going to dictate lengths but please don't just write one sentence and call it a day lol)
Don't add spoilers in the title, and if you are creating a photo post, please spoiler tag it if the picture reveals too much plot.
Some awkward situations
If there's a drama discussion already hosted, and you want to host, please approach the original host to co-host first. Don't try to double post - it'll be awkward for everyone as the mods will defer to the first host.
If you can't finish hosting the drama, try to get a replacement or let the mods know and we'll automate the discussions.
Mods won't interfere or dictate how people should co-host, but here are some tips:
If you see someone had volunteered already, reply to her comment and ask if you can co-host.

How closely should the discussion posts follow airing schedules?
We know how crazy CDrama schedules are, but here's a good guide:
Popular idol dramas (for eg Pursuit of Jade, The Double) should follow the airing dates as closely as possible. For eg, if episodes 5-6 dropped on Feb 2, discussion can happen on Feb 3).
Check the masterpost discussion for the drama. If it has above 50-60 comments, it's usually going to be really popular and people would probably be eager to discuss it.
As for other dramas (ie, one that the sub is not clamoring to discuss, I suppose) you can take a slower approach.
For eg, discussions for Swords into Plowshares and Man's Inhumanity to Man are still taking place even after the drama has stopped airing.
How do I write discussion posts?
Structure the discussions the way you want. Some ideas:
"Classic method" recap of what happened in selected episodes with thoughts.
Share favourite moments in the episodes you discussed
Group episode discussions according to character development
Express episodes / posts about the ending
We don't expect hosts to pay for express episodes!
You can ask the mods to create special express threads for the drama so that you, the host, won't be exposed to spoilers.
For commenters
Please do not discuss future episodes in a thread unless someone specifically ask for information/spoilers. And if you do share, please spoiler tag it.
For example, do not discuss plot points for episode 26 in a post about episode 19.
Those who spoil future episodes will get their comments removed.

On a personal note, I'm really not ready to say good-bye to these characters. It's been a marathon at sprint pace, so I'm barely catching my breath. This definitely warrants a rewatch (if only to fangirl Hou Minghao). The writing, editing, and acting were top notch, and it surpassed my expectations, especially AiMi. She proved that she can carry a drama - and what a drama to debut as a full-fledged FL! I look forward to following her career as she continues to take on challenging and complex roles.

Recap:XiaoWuyi and Xie Jiayu set out to save the Xiao family from execution, but everything immediately goes off the rails. Jiayu is taken by Li Mao, Wuyi is captured by the Eagle King, and it looks like the entire rescue mission has failed. Except…It was all staged!Wuyi and Mao planned the entire “fallout” to deceive Head Eunuch Feng An, who is secretly a Northern Qin spy. Their goal: to make the Eagle King believe his scheme to sow internal discord in Southern Ye was succeeding. The Eagle King, convinced he’s a genius, tries to persuade Wuyi to join him in taking down both empires.
And the Oscar goes to… Li Mao!
The whiplash this man delivers. Even Jiayu couldn’t see through him. But the bromance is back! This is me NOT complaining.
This whole thing was a scheme aimed at the Eagle King.
But… did they really sacrifice all those imperial guards and shadow envoys in the process?
Forgive me for giving up on you, Mao. Is it too late to come back? Good for you, u/-tether-, for holding onto hope I had already abandoned.
Honestly, the conversation with the miracle doctor was sus, and the Xiao family being that silent on the execution ground should’ve been a giant neon sign.
Wuyi deserves an Oscar too. Did nobles take mandatory acting classes in Ancient China?
Wuyi, choosing martyrdom
Wuyi explains everything in his letter to Jiayu — the staged betrayal, the fake fallout between ruler and subject, and why he kept her out of the plan. Jiayu is (very reasonably) furious and is now determined to figure out how to bury “the bastard,” per iQIYI’s translation.
But in his defense, he didn’t a) want her to stop him, and b) didn’t want her to succeed in stopping him, because she’s the only thing he’d actually live for.
Wuyi decides to be a martyr for his nation.

Northern Qin starts cracking
Wuyi’s capture immediately exposes fractures within Northern Qin.
The Emperor’s uncle rushes out an imperial edict demanding Wuyi be brought to the capital because they’re terrified that Wuyi might join forces with the Eagle King and snatch the throne.
Meanwhile, the Eagle King gets arrogant, bragging about his palace spy and regurgitating all the “intel” he thinks he’s gotten from Feng An.
So there we have it... are you all ready for the final episodes?
Final Comments
My heart is happy again that Mao is on the right team and that the Xiao family is safe. I’m most curious now to see what role Lejun will play, and if there’s a third person that the miracle doctor will be saving…

As the curious posts and comments about common tropes are, once again, on the rise, I consider it a matter of urgent public harmony to guide the new and returning viewers through the C drama trifecta and other plot devices. Consider this my public service announcement: a decoding manual of costume drama common tropes and how to navigate through them.
If you are a sleep deprived, chronically dropping, seasoned watcher like me, I urge you to share your words of wisdom.
First things first. What is the C drama trifecta?
Woman in man's clothing, blood spitting and cliff jumping are the holy trinity of costume dramas. These three stand the test of time and tribulations. Without any of these, your drama is getting dangerously close to reality. So.... let's get started.
How to decode them?
Woman in man's clothing - You are now watching the most ordinary, unnoticeable member of the menfolk. Eyeliner, lipstick, tiny frame and breasts must be ignored. Treat him as you usually do with men until the male lead says otherwise.
Blood spitting - Minor disturbance, or Cheng Yi. Former one is usually resolved by sitting down or lying on the bed. Treat it as normal occurrence.
Cliff jumping - Mid disturbance. Jumper(s) would be up and running by tomorrow morning. Treat as usual and move on to the next episode.
Now that we get the gist of these, let's move on to other tropes
Stabbed in the chest/neck/tummy/back - Minor disturbance. No infection or sepsis to be observed. An episode or two to be back on their feet.
Dry coughing - Terminal illness. Slow, painful death. From onset of the symptom to death would take about 5-10 episodes.
Papercut on the neck - Instant death
Hitting the head - Amnesia
Amnesia - Highly stressful situation, without brain damage. Expect to be resolved within 3 - 5 episodes, usually with the help of their love interest's erratic actions.
Tummy pain in women - Pregnancy. Success rate varies.
Tummy pain in men - Serious disease leading to the extended period of bedridden condition
Fake marriage - Real marriage
Real dating/situationship - Miscommunication
Secret identity - Common knowledge that everyone in the drama, and their mother, aunt, extended family and their neighbours' third cousin and the dog know.
Biting - Low chance of onset of cannibalism. Treat it as a love language.
What about commonly sighted items?
Chocolate balls - Miraculous medicine that would revive the dead. Must put it on the palm, slap said palm against the mouth and dramatically throw the head back. No possibility of neck strain. Usually followed by bringing the palm in front of the neck and pushing the air down.
Two inch long mask - Perfect cover. Wearer is unrecognizable by their own mother.
Rain - Immediate high fever
Wine - Poison. Or aphrodisiac.
Cold/stoic/ruthless/menace/God of Death general - Puppy eyed, lovesick man
Cold/ruthless assassin lady - AS ABOVE, but less obviously lovesick
That is the basic decoding guide, but far from exhaustive. Most of the newbies are armed to the teeth and would glide through 40 episodes easily. But I invite the fellow jianghu travellers to decode even more. Let the others know in the comments.
I thought I was the only one who noticed repeated and close shots of feet lmao. Then I saw another comment pointing this out and it made sense.
Once or twice would not have been that noticeable but every character's entry or even random shots of shoes and all is still present 🤣🤣
Another thing that my eyes are hurting from all those shiny, bright and overexposed frames. It's soo glamourous for a Republican Drama 🤕 tbh after watching few episodes of Overdo, I immediately went to rewatch Arsenal Military Academy and honestly it was so easy to watch for the eyes. It also gave a gritty and raw look to the drama. I know both these dramas have different genres but it's a observation of mine.
Since Overdo is focused on angst and revenge, the somber atmosphere would have been more exciting and thrilling. However the over glamorous atmosphere is only making it look like some cheap soap opera.

We open with the aftermath of Wei Mingzhen's death.
Miao Jing has to identify the body, Chen Yi goes with her. She needs to fill out paperwork, Chen Yi goes with her. Shes goes and vomits, Chen Yi goes with her. She needs to transport the body to the cremation mortuary, Chen Yi goes with her ( and calls Uncle Zhou who comes with a hearse). He's a puppy following her around but will bite if needed.
During the funeral, a very awkward funeral ngl, 3 men show up demanding payment of debts. Wei Mingzhen owed them money and they have a contract. Chen Yi insists it's illegal and then Uncle Zhou shows up. He also insists that loan sharking is illegal and the collectors are only owed the principal, not the interest.
Afterwards, they go back to work, but Miao Jing's hearts not really in it. Zhang Bin is doing shady things and is definitely not really trusting Chen Yi.
Chen Yi is planning to leave for a few days and asks Uncle Zhou to keep an eye on Zhang's people. Zhang Bin knows about the police keeping tabs on them, especially one Zhou Kan An. He believes this trip of Chen Yi's is a great opportunity since he's aware that the latter is a police informant.
They take her mom's ashes back to Jiang City, where her maternal grandparents are buried. A pickpocket finds the urn and freaks out. Everyone on the bus believes they're jinxes and won't sit next to them.
They bury her in a cemetery. Afterwards, Miao Jing reveals things about her childhood and how her mom failed as a parent. But she just remembers all the good things her mom did.
Chen Yi dreams of running away to Jiang City, opening a little shop, and living above it and leaving all of the pain of Teng City behind. But wouldn't that be a waste of her education? Since Chen Yi sacrificed so much just for her to get out of Teng City?

- k i'm offically done with this mom arc. We spent an ENTIRE episode on her freaking FUNERAL. Even Chen Yi's dad death got like 10 minutes of screen time max and that one was extremely impactful to the plot. this... this is character arc yes but not worth 4 episodes. this is excessive.
- uh, i have no other thoughts besides when do we get to find out about the past and when is Zhang Bin going to make his move? he seems like the tames of all villians. Not even a villian just a businessman who likes Pool.

Surprise encore
I’ll cover this one in a more quick and dirty fashion due to time restraints and will try a bit of a different format sorting everything by character.
Two sentence summary:
Everything turns on its head (once again) as Li Mao seizes the opportunity to imprison the whole Xiao family when Northern Qin makes a move and Xiao Jun gets implicated of killing Grand Tutor Xie. Xie Jiayu and Xiao Wuyi try to save them.
Some general things at the start of the episode

Li Mao
visits an old sounding guy he once saved and who promised him three lives in return. The first one was the young emperor, so no wonder he is still alive (which means the Empress Dowager is also still alive, thanks for reminding me of her Basil) The second one would be Xiao Wuyi, because Li Mao wants to beat him so bad he can’t see him die first. Even at the cost of other lifes, whatever that means in this context.
He has this big chip on his shoulder about his need to beat Xiao Wuyi. Insecure to the bone, despite all his posturing. And tells his former best friend point blank that while Xiao Wuyi has not much time left, Xie Jiayu and himself have many years. So no need to rush and I guess he’s talking about rekindling his relationship with his ex after her husband dies. With a smile on his face. Nice guy.
He listens to Xie Jiayu’s very logical explanation of why the Xiao Ju who killed her father must have been an imposter, but decides to use the situation to his own advantage: On his order the whole Xiao family is imprisoned in secret and awaits sentencing. In secret to not give Xiao Wuyi a chance to flee.
At court, while punishing He Juanyi, he gets a secret message by the Brocade Guard: A Black Cavalry squad of the Beifu Army is travelling day and night heading straight for Jiankang. That shows that Xiao Wuyi deployed troops back, which he is not allowed to do. A rule set by Wuyi himself, but breaking it shows his disregard for the imperial order. Might be a pure distraction.
Li Mao wonders about the secret escape routes Xie Jiayu has to take to escape the guards within the city. He really hates not being in control of the situation. Not even emperor and already getting paranoid. He orders the guard to keep a close watch in Xiyue restaurant now that Xiao Wuyi is back in the city.
Grand Tutor Xie
apologises for everything he has done to his daughter. I think he really means it, but I’m also glad Xie Jiayu is able to just step away from that situation. Some things are very hard to forgive.
still a great performance by Peter Ho.
“Do take care to stay warm.” are his last words to his daughter, not that they both know it yet. But it’s nice to see him going back to care for her, like the first episodes showed him to do.
While preparing his move he decides to leave a lot of his books to the Imperial Academy.
He really seems to embrace his daughters words of the new generation having to find their own ways.
Unfortunately he is confronted and killed by Xiao Ju. Or some Northern Qin agent posing as Xiao Ju.
Xie Jiayu
tells her father she looks forward to the Ye Xiao Wuyi tries to build.
Despite all the strife between them she is deeply shocked by Xie Huaigui’s death. Even more shocked by the revelation that he was killed by her father-in-law. But she is level-headed enough to realise that the whole thing is a set-up and that someone from Northern Qin, wearing a face mask like Cui Jun, must be behind it.
She is shackled and brought to the palace and can’t even get angry over Li Mao’s betrayal. She just doesn’t understand him: “I still can’t tell when you are acting and when you are being genuine” (same girl, same). She thinks that makes him perfect for being an emperor.
She is determined to carry on Xiao Wuyi’s legacy if he has to leave her so early.
On the way to the palce Ye Xing rescues her in a cool action sccene, while she attacks Li Mao with something peach-related because he is allergic to peaches.
They find temporary shelter (and food!) with He Yuanji.
Highest priority goes to warning Xiao Wuyi not to return to Jiankang. Xie Jiayu sends Ye Xing out of town to achieve that.
Liu Yu’e, Empress Wenix’s former maid steps in to keep Xie Jiayu save in his absence. She reveals to her that there are many Shadow Envoy’s like her in Jiankang.
Xiao Wuyi
before his return to the North he will first inspect the capital’s defence for three days.
he destroys the Phoenix Heart Token, Xie Jiayu can tell them about the whereabouts of the mineral deposits in the future, if they are needed. That also gives her a more secure position in the capital, even after his death. I like the idea of casting the remains into a hairpin for her.
he doesn’t like war but knows it’s needed to secure peace
While on the inspection tour Li Mao orders him to be brought back and striped of his post.
When Ye Xing reaches him with news from Jiankang his first thought is Xie Jiayu’s safety. Sweet.
He, accompanied by Qing Long and Yan Yue, sneaks back to Jiankang via ship. They are nearly discovered but able to escape.
They try to pose as drunks to enter Xiyue restaurant. Luckily Wuyi notices the Ghost Lamps before the restaurant that warn him of the lurking danger, so they leave.
She is sure that Li Mao won’t expose her identity in the future, since he didn’t while announcing the exam results. It’s still something he could easily blackmail her with and that’s exactly why she thinks he will be more secure in letting her work for him.
We get this beautiful sequence of her entering the palace while Xiao Yao leaves it. Those two have a real ‘two ships passing in the night’ feeling to their relationship that is never the relationship some of us anticipated. At least it’s very beautiful to look at. I love the shots where the one closer to the camera is out of focus, they are both out of reach for each other.
She submits a memorial in favour of the Xiao family to the regent and gets scolded for doing so while not being a censor.
Her (very reasonable) argument is that the Xiao family is Southern Ye’s backbone against Northern Qin, which should led to a more thorough investigation of the whole issue. She gets 30 strikes with the cane for speaking against Li Mao.
Li Lejun & Mulian Yu
Li Lejun tries to flee from her husband (? I assume they are married) and Northern Qin
Mulian Yu catches her and reveals that he knew about her spying for her brother all along but never intercepted her letters.
Nanxing
She is no longer registered as a slave, but as the manager of the Miraculous Craft. Good for her.
She is quite indignant at the possibility of her being into Qing Long and lectures Xie Jiayu that Qing Long is totally into Yan Yue and trying to spent more time with Yan Yue through her. Nanxing also likes to be around Yan Yue. This sounds like the background comedy we didn’t get to see. Especially with Ye Xing being thrown into the mix.
But the most important person to her is still Xie Jiayu, so she will try to earn more money for her.
The poor chap’s downfall is that he gambles behind his wife’s back: there are no witnesses to this, whereas Commandant of Justice Lu and a whole host of people were able to witness his alleged killing spree.
The confession he wrote to Empress Wenxi at the eve of the old Capital’s fall is used as evidence against him: According to this confession he brought 200 people of the Lu and An families to the execution ground knowing all to well they were innocent. Allegedly this confession was in the Grand Tutor’s hand and Xiao Ju killed him to silence him and this evidence.
The confession is in fact real: He acted that way back then to suppress the uprising of the other noble families. But it must have fallen in Northern Qin's hands, which lead to this whole ruse.
Xiao Yao & Yao Yunzhi
On Li Mao’s orders they are both arrested.
Finale
Liu Yu’e and Xie Jiayu sneak into the Court of Judicial Review to set the Xiao family free. Li Mao and his guards are already waiting for them. He knows she used Xiao Wuyi's return as a distraction.
Xie Jiayu stabs him before Xiao Wuyi, Qing Long and Yan Yue appear on the scene. Xie Jiayu calls Li Mao for being unreasonable in all of this. He accuses them of already planning to dispose of him in the future with all their secret Shadow Envoys and passages in the city.
He also threatens Xiao Wuyi with executing his family the next day. Xiao Wuyi has no other option at that moment but to escape with Xie Jiayu, but not before saying what many of us will think after this episode:
I've been tolerant enough with you.
Some Thoughts:
I’m so glad even the character’s are struggling to keep up with Li Mao’s contradictory actions and don’t know what to make of them and him. After watching the episode I especially don’t know what to make of the first scene of him trying to get Xiao Wuyi healed. Or is his family the sacrifice that has to be made? Not sure what the reason could be?
I really loved “Xiao Ju” stabbing Grand Tutor Xie. That was such a well done shock moment. Although it quickly became clear what was actually going on, for a few moments I thought we were being shown that the Xiao family isn’t perfect either. What a great way to bring those face masks back into play.
Not sure where all of this will end tomorrow. I was really hoping for them to team up against Northern Qin, but Li Mao’s self-doubts and paranoia won’t allow for that.
He Yuanji is really come far and she has some real backbone.
Seriously, I've not laughed so hard watching a Chinese drama before! 😆 Very few Chinese dramas make me laugh, by the way, but Xiao Fang actually managed to make me giggle and burst out laughing throughout the entire first episode.
The story is pretty simple: Xiaofang and her boyfriend Xiao Wei hail from the same village, except that their families hate each other. Somehow they end up together and Xiao Fang gets pregnant. Both return to the village when she is well and truly pregnant and showing...and very unmarried.
I like how this drama tackles this issue. Granted, it's just the first episode, but I like how undramatic they made it. It's like, yeah, she's pregnant, so what? They'll get married anyway! Of course, we have the gossipy villagers who think it's a scandal, and their families are equally alarmed. But there are some family members who are great. Like, I legit love grandma - whom I am convinced where Xiao Fang got her sass from. Grandma is so completely accepting of Xiao Fang's pregnancy from the start and didn't make a big deal out of her being unwed and all. I love that the oldest generation in the family is the most accepting of Xiao Fang's condition.
Wang Yinglu is as usual a natural at playing quirky characters so she's a delight as usual. I found myself surprised by Xin Yun Lai (Xiao Wei) - I found him a tad, er, stiff in Glory, but here he's pretty natural with comedy and seems more at ease. Maybe he should star in modern dramas more.
I am so looking forward to more episodes.

Welcome to the recap and discussion of Key to the Phoenix Heart, episode 23. We finally get the entire background story to the An-Lu families’ tragedy and execution from 20 years ago. Several loose ends are tied up and new beginnings abound for our characters as we head into the final arc of the drama. Let’s begin!

The An and Lu family tragedy finally comes to a head in this episode
The resolution to, and entire background of, the An-Lu family tragedy from 20 years ago finally surfaces and is rectified. Everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief, especially Xie Huaigui. As u/BasilOrdinary3617 has observed, the new generation is intent on rectifying the mistakes and sins of the past generation, and that is certainly hopeful in heralding a new era of internal peace and cooperation amongst the throne, nobles, and commoners.
Despite the many setbacks (and torture) Xiao Wuyi endures, he remains steadfast and committed to accomplish his goals of reform before he dies, while Xie Jiayu’s personal growth and real life experience has made her a force to be reckon with, as Li Mao soon finds out. General Xiao Ju and Xie Huaigui have their own confrontation about the past, which implies that there are some secrets yet to be revealed which may hold relevance to our present time. In other news, He Yuanji, our resident He family head and scholar, was able to take the imperial examination and scored a first rank, conferring both an academic title and opportunity to become a court official!!

When seeking justice become obsessive revenge: the An and Lu family tragedy
Xie Huaigui’s obsession with the An and Lu family tragedy, and his fixation on revenge have interlocking personal and political reasons. He had an affair with Consort An, a royal consort of Emperor Wenxi. Li Mao is their child from that affair. On the conviction of treason, Emperor Wenxi executed all members of the An and Lu families, including Consort An, over 20 years ago. But, the families were framed. Emperor Wenxi, to suppress the power of the noble families, falsely accused the An and Lu families of colluding with Northern Qin. These families were tasked with stabilizing the riverbanks to withstand the impact of floodwaters. They came up with a creative and unique solution to preserve homes successfully using bamboo cages filled with different shaped pebbles in a complex arrangement to disperse the waters. But, the emperor fraudulently cited this method as evidence of the An and Lu families deliberately damaging the waterways and colluding with Northern Qin. This, however, created internal strife, and gave an opportunity to Northern Qin to invade Ye all the way to the capital.
Yuanji’s appointment and the final Showdown with Xie Huaigui

All the secrets regarding the An and Lu families tragedy spill over during a ceremony in which Yuanji is about to enter the Imperial Academy due to her first rank score on the imperial exam. Earlier, the Lantai gathering was replaced by a spring examination to rid Ye of nepotism in the official ranks. This was to open more opportunities for intelligent and talented, but poor, scholars to obtain a court position, and establish a meritocratic system of governance. Xie Huaigui insisted that one of the exam questions was to find a solution to the floodwater problems. He Yuanji’s answer, which gave her the highest score, was a creative alternative to the predicable answer normally given by scholars.
Xie Huaigui takes the opportunity to protest that this alternative method was actually implemented by the An and Lu families, yet was also used to implicate them falsely of treason. If Li Mao accepts He Yuanji’s exam answer as the best, that proves that Emperor Wenxi was mistaken, and wrongly convicted the An and Lu families.
The bamboo cage and pebble method of waterway construction that the An and Lu families implemented
Back at Jing’an Manor, Xiao Yao brings a model of the bamboo cage and pebbles, and it seems that Xiao Wuyi and Xiao Yao knew about this An-Lu alternative solution to the flood problem. Xie Jiayu joins Xiao Yao at the Eastern Palace with a mechanical model that simulates the flood waters, and using the bamboo cage with pebbles, they demonstrate that this method is better at protecting homes from the impact of floodwaters.
No one is innocent
Xiao Ju and Xie Huaigui reminisce about the accumulative injustices against innocents
Xie Huaigui’s vengefulness extends to the Jing’an family, General Xiao Ju in particular, because the general concealed the truth about the An and Lu families’ innocence.
Outside the Court of Judicial Review General Xiao Ju confronts Xie Huaigui about their shared past. When Xie Huaigui used the collapse of the grain canals to bring down the Jing’an household, it confirmed the general’s suspicions that the rumors about Grand Tutor’s past affair with Consort A were true. Xie Huaigui spits back that Xiao Ju knew the accusations against the An and Lu families were false, yet he remained silent. But, things are not quite so black and white. Xiao Ju recounts that the nobility abused their absolute power in those days, defying imperial authority and oppressing the people.
Xie Huaigui fixates on the injustice of executing the families under false accusations, and charged Xiao Ju with obtaining his rank by sacrificing those innocent noble families. Xiao Ju admits that he is not innocent, but that for the poor scholars, Emperor and Empress Wenxi, and the country, he burned his own ships. I’m curious to know if what he says here is meant to show his actions were always patriotically motivated (and therefore excusable) or if it hints to other past histories yet to be resolved. He challenges Xie Huaigui with a rhetorical question: in terms of wrongful deaths, who will champion the poor scholars and those also killed unjustly by the An and Lu families?
Commentary and Analysis
Tragic hero, tragic villain
Edit: I chose a different image than the one originally posted because I think this montage perfectly captures their unity, shared ideals, unwavering commitment to each other, and devotion to face whatever comes their way.
Well, it doesn’t get more glaringly obvious than a military book written in blood to reflect the sacrifice given for a country’s peace, nor the author’s tenacity to ensure that peace continues even after he’s gone. This is one of the qualities that make Xiao Wuyi so endearing, and perhaps tragic, as a hero. He truly isn’t looking to fulfill some self-interest. He may take dangerous risks, be ruthless in his pursuit of reform, and make unilateral decisions that adversely affect his health, but all of this is in service of a vision and dream greater than himself. What also sets him apart is a rejection of living in the past or rectifying wrongs done to him. He has no ambition to retake a throne that rightfully belongs to him, nor to preserve the reputation of his biological parents. He does not seek revenge, even against Xie Huaigui. He remains focus on his patriotic ideals: to protect the Ye people from floods and open the grain canal to the north as soon as possible.
I want to feel sympathy for Xie Huaigui, but when you turn evil in order to extract justice, you're gone off track.
What I find interesting about Xie Huaigui is that even though he’s our villain, by all accounts, he was an idealistic scholar in his youth who couldn’t let go of an injustice he witnessed and suffered through. That makes him no less of a villain, but certainly a tragic one. He couldn’t let go of the past (perhaps understandably), but chose to join in the political game of scheming, plotting, and seeking revenge rather than true justice. That kind of unforgiveness perpetuates the injustices he suffered by his own actions for revenge (under the guise of poetic justice).

An honest conversation about living on borrow time ends with tears, promises, and a lot of love
There’s so much to rave about regarding Xiao Wuyi and Xiao Jiayu’s relationship. The first is that even though their interests are different, they are compatible and complementary to each other. They both seek out the flourishing and peace of Ye, but in their unique way. Xiao Wuyi wants to root out the corruption, rectify wrongs, and reform the system to eliminate nepotism. Xie Jiayu wants to invent and create things that improve the lives of the everyman. He wants to raze everything to the ground, but for the sake of rebuilding a better life. The end goal was never destruction, but to construct a better future. In other words, they may be acting in their own realms, but sequentially their work is tied to each other. I wouldn’t be surprised of Xiao Wuyi knew this instinctively, which is why he encouraged Xie Jiayu to travel, gain real life experience, all the while honing her inventor’s skills. The country may need him for a moment of reform, but it needs her even more to rebuild afterwards.
Secondly, I’m really enjoying how they depict Xie Jiayu and Xiao Wuyi’s relationship as it has developed in this series. They both had growth arcs, but things were logical, realistic, and resolved as they worked and suffered together for the justice and safety of Ye. I love how their relationship doesn’t have needlessly petty and contrived conflicts and misunderstandings. Their bickering and tussles are usually within the realm of comedic relief, but when it comes to serious matters and strategies, they are united in their ideals, values, and actions.
In this episode they finally have a heart-to-heart about his illness, and how they will face it together. One way in which they are still at odds with each other is how to use the time they have left. All his actions are in preparation for a future without him, whereas she is focused on living fully together in the now. What remains unspoken is Xiao Wuyi’s strategy that gave her time to mature into the independent and capable woman who could seek her own happiness and well-being after he is gone. It’s a noble thing for him to do, but she rightly points out that she would have chosen differently had she known the truth. She asks that he operate with the intention to stay alive for as long as possible. It is a difficult decision to make when you’re living on borrowed time, and both parties have good reasons for the choices they made (or wanted to make). Is there really a right answer or a best answer to their predicament?
A man with no vision does not know his own desires

Li Mao displays erratic emotions throughout these last few episodes. He does not hesitate to stab Xiao Wuyi while he is chained to a cross for torture. But, when the medical physician expresses congratulations that Xiao Wuyi will soon die of the blood stasis, it sends Li Mao into a rage. He vows never to be anyone’s pawn, yet seems continually to be under the directive of either his father or Xiao Wuyi’s guiding vision.
When Li Mao was still young and full of ideals of a perfectly just Ye
He seems willing to throw everything away to protect people he loves: Li Lejun or Xie Jiayu, but a casual stroll around the capital triggers a memory of when Li Mao was young and said that he hoped for peace and prosperity for Ye. He had a vision back then. At the end of episode 23, he makes several sound and just judgments. Will he stay on the right path of reform, or he will let darker ambitions take hold in the future?
Remaining Questions

(1) Will we ever find out Xie Jiayu’s real parentage? Will it be important to the plot?
(2) Earlier, Xiao Wuyi cited three reforms he wanted to implement, but we never hear the third one. What could it be?

Miao Jing and her mom, Wei MingZhen, walk around town. Mom seems to be trying to re-create some of those moments where she let Miao Jing down. Miao Jing‘s not really having it. Wei MingZhen tries to win a stuffy from a claw machine. Miao Jing ends up actually winning it herself. They go to dinner. It’s awkward. Wei MingZhen gives her the gold bracelet she bought for her. Miao Jing puts her up in a hotel room in the same hotel she’s staying at. Wei MingZhen ask Miao Jing if she will go with her to visit her mother's grave. Miao Jing doesn't reply.
At the end of work Miao Jing says she want home and Cen Ye volunteers to take her. He follows her up to the apartment and they open the door to Tu Li drying her hair. There is a moment of shock. We know what this looks like. We also know that it’s not what it looks like. But at the same time, it totally looks like that. Chen Yi comes out and wants to know what Cen Ye is doing there. It’s like he’s totally oblivious to what the implications of this look like. He just wants Cen Ye gone. Tu Li says this isn’t what it looks like. At least she has some situational awareness. Bao shows up to break the tension. Miao Jing tells Cen Ye to leave. Tu Li explains about her ex and Bao to Miao Jing.
Tu Li’s psycho ex, Yang Dajun, starts banging on the door and Chen Yi throws water at him through the door. The Yang Dajun says he won't leave. He starts going off on the fact that Bao is his son and unless Tu Li gives him money he won’t go or he’ll take the kid. Chen Yi starts to head through the door but Miao Jing grabs him, pulling him back. And she handles it like a boss. Miao Jing turns the tables, calling Yang Dajun out on his gambling debts, which is why he needs money, so he can leave or she’ll call the police. When Yang Dajun says he won’t leave, she calls the police and he leaves. Chen Yi standing there looking so proud as Miao Jing just handles the entire situation.
Super cute moment while they are all eating hot pot when Bao says that Chen Yi is Miao Jing’s Bao. It’s freaking adorable. Also true.
Tu Li and Bao spend the night in Miao Jing's room. Tu Li talks a little bit about her past and wonders if she is a good mother. Miao Jing says that if Wei MingZhen had been more like Tu Li, she would have had a happier childhood. Chen YI is out on the couch and thinks back to living with Wei MingZhen and Chen Li Bin. Why is Chen Yi sleeping on the couch? There’s another bed. They’re in Miao Jing‘s room. Maybe that way he can put a stop to the ex if he comes back up? In the morning Tu Li and Bao are gone early. Miao Jing tells Chen Yi about her mom's request and says she will do it because they owe each other nothing. Chen Yi asks Miao Jing if she’s moving back in. She says we’ll see.
The audit is almost finished. Cen Ye and Ma Yang need to go Lingang because there is an issue with the cash flow for one part of Haoyun but everything else is legit. Miao Jing recognizes the name of Liu Bin Bo. Or Liu Shan Bai . I'm pretty sure these are the same character but the show has one name and the wiki's another. He was there the night Chen Yi had to play pool for Zhang Bin. Miao Jing finds this odd because it was before Chen Yi was hired. She convinces Cen Ye that she should go on the business trip instead.
Wei MingZhen is taking pills. Miao Jing texts her that once she can take leave she will go with her to Jiang City to grandma's grave. In Lingang, Miao Jing discovers that the code on the toys being delivered is different from the stores.
Chen Yi is a mopey little puppy without Miao Jing. He makes a countdown calendar for when Miao Jing is back. Eventually, he ends up at the pool hall and Bo Zai and Da Yong try to figure out how to help him. They are no help. The only thing they got right is he’s mopey because he misses Miao Jing.
Episode 26
Qiao Qiao shows up and they all go back to our newlyweds apartment for food. I don’t know if it’s lunch or dinner. It looks like lunch to me, but then it seems like dinner so I don’t know. Bo Zai has lots of bad advice. Qiao Qiao actually has some practical stuff. She points out to Chen Yi that a relationship is building a future and that one person cannot do all the giving. Chen Yi takes Qiao Qiao advice and calls Miao Jing, basically to tell her he misses her. She said she’ll be home soon. This makes him amazingly happy.
Chen Yi then gets a call from Ma Yang. Wei MingZhen collapsed in her hotel room and they brought her to the hospital. Chen Yi goes to the hospital and fills out the paperwork. Wei MingZhen has breast cancer. Chen Yi asked her coworkers not to spread this around at work. And then he calls Miao Jing. We don’t actually get to see him call Miao Jing and before he does, it seems like he’s not going to. But then he did. But I’m kind of wishing they’d put that in because it’s a little bit more of a shared responsibility as opposed to trying to shield her from this. Anyway, it’s character growth and we didn’t actually get to see it.
Miao Jing leaves her business trip and comes back. Chen Yi tries to figure out if Wei MingZhen wants money or Miao Jing‘s attention. Miao Jing talks to the doctor and learns that Wei MingZhen has stage 4 breast cancer and it’s in her bones and brain. If you know cancer, especially in any type of show, that’s basically the kiss of death. Miao Jing decides that she still wants to do treatment for Wei MingZhen. Chen Yi learns that she got married and has a stepson who is a student. Wei MingZhen got sick a year ago, but the treatment got too expensive and she and her husband split.
Chen Yi and Miao Jing get Mom set up in a private hospital room with a nurse to take care of her. Miao Jing shows up after work and tells her mom she’s gonna take some leave. Her mom says not to, that she needs money. Wei MingZhen wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to get up. Even though the doctor said not to, Miao Jing helps her into a wheelchair and they go outside. Wei MingZhen expresses some regret. And asked for lots of paper money to be burned for her after she dies.
Chen Yi spends the night in the car. His car is not very big although I’m pretty sure he could lay one of those seats down and then stretch out his long legs. Anyway, sometimes I question his life choices. Miao Jing wakes up and realizes her mom is no longer in the hospital room . Also, she has changed out of patient clothes into street clothes. Chen Yi and Miao Jing go running through the hospital looking for Wei MingZhen. Miao Jing finds her in a bathroom on another floor putting on lipstick. Wei MingZhen says that she won’t die that bed looking like a dirty old rag. Wei MingZhen collapses. Miao Jing catches her. Wei MingZhen dies in Miao Jing‘s arms.
The nurse lets Miao Jing know that the morgue charges by the day so funeral arrangements should be made quickly. The nurse‘s bedside manner is a bit abrupt. Death really is a mercenary business. Chen Yi comforts Miao Jing.
Thoughts:
I am still enjoying this show, I just wish that there was more tension. The first half of the show managed to carry the tension and character development. Recently there is potential for tension but the episodes are not carrying it as well. I really want to feel the threat that Zhang Bin is and it keeps getting sidelined. Chen Yi is a police informant, Zhang Bin doesn’t trust him. Miao Jing is investigating him. The tension is there, it’s just not actually present in these two episodes.
Chen Yi is finally understanding, just a little bit, why Miao Jing is upset with him. Thank goodness for Li Qiao Qiao. He needs to make an effort and think about their future together. I think we made some progress in these episodes. He helps but lets her handle it.
Wei MingZhen is the type of character I love to hate. She is selfish and has made many mistakes. She's screwed people over again and again, including her daughter. She is constantly trying to get to the next thing, mostly at the expense of other people. At the same time, Wei MingZhen does love Miao Jing, at least a little. She is just too little, too late. Her return is to see her daughter again before she dies. Miao Jing is the character that I actually care about. She wants that relationship with her mom, She just doesn’t trust it and I don’t blame her.
So how do we feel about Wei MingZhen death? Are we going to get some resolution of the fire? Is Chen Yi going to get caught by Zhang Bin?
