He used to be a better dad when I was kid but around 6th grade (2012, previously from 2008-2011 his only sins against me where slapping me in the face over homework, grades, me lying about them and comparing my grades against my peers as soon as I give him anything with a grade on it), my mother and him started fighting because my mother was allegedly texting a male doctor at work from a burner flip phone but there is no proof she did anything physic as I remember my dad brought her to my bedroom in the middle of the night as they thought I was sound asleep after the discovery and made her swear on my life she didn't do anything, and there wasn't a lot of peace in the house for a couple of years.
Shortly after, he started becoming paranoid with thinking that someone is coming inside the house, hacking out computer network, and tapering with electronics while we are all there asleep and that someone is doing black magic on us so we each had to bathe ourselves in a herbal mixture when I was kid.
Now in 2026, he's unemployed for 2 years after almost 2 decades in technology. He started a company 2 years ago which is him just telling a small group of poorly-paid even for 3rd world standards developers in South Asia vaguely what to build with and even though he's developed 2 software products his company only brings in less than $1500 a month before expenses of the company and that is from other technical services not from the software he's spent 2 years on. He only has 1 paying client (my mother's friend)
He started this company because he doesn't want to take a tech jobs that pay under 140k even though he has gray hairs because he earned as high as 200k in the past back in the mid 2010s. This leaves my mother (who's high earning over 200k) having to pay the bills as I job search as a new grad which if you didn't know is difficult because of ghost jobs, AI-screening, AI automation/displacement, high-interest rates, tech layoffs, uncertainty due to politics and because the global population is expected to decline. The company is extremely poorly run because its just my dad and a bunch of fresh graduates working for very little and I interned for 2 months myself and saw the lack of PM, lack of code reviews, documentation, and lack of funding and no seniors other than my dad who isn't a software guy or even a coder, which to other people in tech shows the company and its software is brittle. I overheard him talking on the phone with his friend saying that "I'm doing this so I can say I did something fearless". The issue I have with it is because he choosing not to take jobs that pay 90k-110k. He leaves my mother with all the bills, which according his own religion he practices is a sin.
He has in the past hit my mother and my mother has hit him. He's quite lazy and the only thing I've learned from him is "why do something yourself when it's easier to have someone else do it."
I don't agree with either of them hitting each other but I do feel the father should take the high road to at least show his boys what restraint is.
I've realized that he basically just got lucky at a few important things in his 20s (got a visa before 9/11, got into tech pre-Y2K, got married to a doctor, and that what I thought was work ethic was just lucky positioning in an economy and global society that was at its most prosperous and open.
I feel I have learned more about what it means to not be a man from my father than I have learned about what it means to be one.
I am very grateful for my gem of a mother (who has her own problems and damaged me a bit as a kid by giving me benzodiazepines to sleep at 12 which made me interested in drugs, giving me body image issues, comparing me to my closest friends my whole life in looks, and grades, and stopping my social life whenever I had one) but is very smart, responsible, and caring outside of a few mistakes I don't think she meant to do to me.
tl;dr
AIO for being harboring a strongly negative view of him and for hoping I don't become like him for these reasons:
- puts his ego over the family's needs for stability and my mother's need for an early retirement.
- being a paranoid nut-bag.
- used to slap me in the face as a kid over homework and lying which as I'm learning now is not normal thing that all kids have to deal with.
- used to pull my ears and i have bigger ears now.
- does the dishes incorrectly on purpose resulting in them being dirty after being washed in the washing machine which is the 1 of 2 chores he's asked to do.
- has no regard or concern for my mothers health and well-being.
- taught me nothing, no mentorship other than learning how to protect myself against black magic which isn't a real life skill and I could've just asked a member of our religion's clergy.
- was always late whenever he had to pick me up as a kid 30-45 minutes generally maybe 10 if I was lucky.
- judges me unprompted
- fought with my mother my whole youth
-Hit my mother
- Mistreats her (hasn't spent on her on ages, other than cheap chocolates and flowers on certain occasion, won't lift a finger to make her life easier.
- thinks father is the supreme leader who can never be defied or wrong
