Welcome to r/AppBuilding – The Hub for Building, Shipping, and Scaling Apps

Welcome to r/AppBuilding! 👋

We created this community because we saw a gap. Most app development spaces are either flooded with "I have a billion-dollar idea, build it for free" requests or are too fragmented between specific languages.

r/AppBuilding is the central hub for the entire lifecycle of an application. Whether you are a solo indie hacker, a startup founder, or an enterprise engineer, this is the place to:

  • Build: Discuss tech stacks (Flutter vs. React Native vs. Native), solve complex bugs, and share architecture tips.
  • Ship: Talk about App Store optimization (ASO), rejection horror stories, and launch strategies.
  • Scale: Discuss backend infrastructure, monetization, and user acquisition.

The House Rules

  1. No Low-Effort "Idea" Posts: We are builders. If you have an idea, tell us how you plan to execute it. Don't just look for free labor.
  2. Zero Tolerance for Spam: Self-promotion is allowed only in the weekly "Showcase" thread (coming soon). If you are an agency, share knowledge, not just your link.
  3. Be Constructive: We were all beginners once. If someone asks a basic question, guide them. If you disagree on a tech stack, debate the code, not the person.

Introduce Yourself!

To kick things off, let’s get to know who is here. Drop a comment below with:

  1. What are you currently building? (or what do you want to build?)
  2. What is your preferred tech stack? (e.g., React Native, Swift, Flutter, No-Code)
  3. One struggle you are facing right now.

Let’s build something great.

Can I buy Google play installs? Is it effective?

Hi app dev here, and I have been thinking about trying to buy Google play installs for my app just to see if it actually does anything. My app has been on play store for a while now and my install numbers are low, which makes my listing look like nobody cares about it. I started looking into this mostly as an experiment to see if a push in installs changes how Google play ranks my app in search results.

Before I spend anything though I want to know a few things, like does buying playstore installs actually help my app show up higher on Google play or does it not matter at all, do the installs stick or do they just disappear after a few days, is there a risk of my app getting suspended or my developer account getting flagged for it, how do I tell if a provider is legit or just going to take my money and deliver nothing, and do the installs come from real devices or is it all bot stuff that Google play can detect right away?

If anyone here has done this before with their own app I would really like to hear how it went.

Genuine question for anyone building RN/Expo apps:

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Is it me but its annoying when i change something in my expo app and then i go over to check and its not it

and i wish that it would be way faster, like just make a change and instantly on your phone without having to reload the app to see the change

and i also wish that i could just edit my app like Figma and just see the change instantly and not having to worry about finding that one line of code that i need to change

so thats why i build Basalt, an IDE extension that lives in your Cursor or VS code

It’s currently in beta, so please commit your app to Git before using it!

I built a digital commonplace book

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

People have been hand-copying passages for centuries. That was the original commonplace book: find something worth keeping, write it out by hand, and close the book.

I used note apps for a long time. Features, brushes, layouts… I’d open them and forget why I came. Sometimes I only wanted a few quiet minutes copying something I liked. Instead I got pulled into whether my handwriting looked good or not.

So I built this app around one behavior: pick a short passage → copy it by hand → leave with a small finished page. No productivity system. No streaks. The point is the copying itself—something that helps empty my head.

It’s in the App Store review (no public download yet). Waitlist if you want it when it goes live:
https://properworks.co/moodscript

I'm also curious if you have interest in this kind of app or any thoughts or suggestions for me.

Could someone break it down for me how I would go about getting constant, reliable grocery price data imported in an app I’m building?

Looking for Play Store/Android "Closed Testers"

Recently re-started Flutter app building and need some help rebuilding my "closed tester" pool for the Google Play Store to reactivate my production distribution button.

If anyone is interested, feel free to DM me so I can add you to the list. If you're interested you're more than welcome to actually poke around with the app, or leave it alone.

I'm looking for 10-12 emails to add to the tester list. TIA!

Here's the listing on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/shootsmart/id1643072633

TL;DR: ShootSmart is an app that lets users track their performance at the range, get computer vision enabled coaching tips, as well as provides them with a shot timer and ballistics calculator.

A $3 habit tracker with no subscription

Post image
1 Upvotes

I know there are already a lot of habit trackers out there.

I made this as a smaller project because I thought I could use a simple one myself, something that doesn’t take much effort and doesn’t come with a subscription.

This one is intentionally simple:

- See your whole week at a glance
- Tap once to complete a habit
- Add, remove, and reorder habits quickly
- No account
- No subscription

Because it was a smaller project, I wanted to keep the price low and let as many people as possible try it.

It’s free until the second Sunday after you download it, so you always get at least 7 days to use it properly.

After that, it’s $3 lifetime

App store link: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6787936049

I’d love feedback if you try it out.

TestFlight error: "Could not install - The requested app is not available or doesn't exist"

Hey everyone,

I'm facing an issue with TestFlight on a newly activated Apple Developer Account (individual).

The Issue:
In TestFlight, the build shows up fine, and the "Install" button is active. However, when I tap "Install", I immediately get the error:
"Could not install Vowed. The requested app is not available or doesn't exist."

What I've verified so far:
- App Store Connect: The build (Build 8, iOS 1.0.0) is in "Ready to Test" status. Export Compliance is completed.
- Testing Groups: Assigned to an Internal Testing group with my Apple ID added as a tester.
- Build Details: Built via Expo / EAS.

What I've tried:
- Re-inviting testers and clearing internal tester lists.
- Verified eas credentials and provisioning profiles.
- Contacted Apple Developer Support (Case ID escalated to internal engineering team, awaiting follow-up).

Has anyone experienced this specific CDN / provisioning profile sync lock on newly activated individual Apple Developer accounts? Is this purely an Apple backend sync issue, or is there any EAS / provisioning flag I might be missing?

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Built a gift card manager app with password manager level security, sharing the story and my approach to building

A bit of my background, I'm a software developer of 20+ years and took interest in Android development some 15 years ago, joined big and small companies (including startups) working on mostly consumer Android and iOS apps. The latest startup company that I joined ran out of money and I'm suddenly out of job, so while looking for job (job market pretty grim for mobile devs right now) I took the opportunity to work on this project which I wanted to do for some time. This is not vibe coded, but AI is used of course to speed up development, especially the non essential parts like the landing page website (sorry). Being a veteran developer, I'm still trying to adjust the mindset of utilizing agentic AI in day to day workflow, but so far so good - planning and brainstorming with the AI feels like sci-fi, and so far I'm loving the boost in productivity due to these tools, and of course I'll be careful not to let AI take the front role seat when designing and coding the essential parts of the app.

Btw this is not my first commercial app, I've published an Android only app called Credit Card Manager more than 10 years ago as a hobby project, it still has active users.

The Story:
Me and my wife like stacking discounted gift cards, particularly for weekly groceries. SuperCards, while great, does not have native gift card support for balance tracking.

There are many apps in this space, but most of them work strictly offline due to security and privacy concerns. I use BitWarden to store shared cards between me and my wife, such as credit cards (for auto-fill when shopping online), and eBay gift cards, using their ‘share vault’ feature. It works great but they do not support barcodes.

So I thought of building one such app that combines the features of gift card managers with BitWarden’s password manager level security and ‘share vault’ feature.

I called it CardWarden. (not very creative with names)

Designed from the ground up, I want the app to instantly sync data between family members in real-time, with security done right - zero knowledge server architecture (server can’t see user data, attacker of a breach gets nothing) with client-side encryption, public/private key exchange when sharing cards (true end to end encryption), and also without sacrificing privacy or handing our sensitive financial habits over to a third party.

The UI is built to be reactive, so if my wife spends a gift card at the register, the remaining balance on my screen updates instantly without requiring a manual pull-to-refresh.

The app is cross platform Android and iOS. Check out the screenshots and join the beta here if you're interested:

Looking For Feedback on my AI Fitness App Need Genuine Reviews

Another workout app, sorry. After feedback on it.

DropSet Beta is live on Android and iOS.

Crowded space, so here's what's actually different:

50 built-in multi-week programs. 5/3/1, GZCLP, PPL, Candito, beginner routines. Not blank templates — the app runs the cycle and does the progression maths between weeks.

Custom programs. Build your own block if none fit.

Bring your history. CSV import from Strong and Hevy.

Analytics that go past a volume chart. A 0–100 recovery score from four signals (volume load vs your 4-week average, RPE trend, frequency, sleep), a deload recommendation that fires when several of them line up, and ACWR workload ratio with the optimal band marked. Alongside that: strength index, muscle balance and weekly sets per muscle against MRV, near-PR tracking, goal forecasts. Every number has an info button showing how it's calculated — no black-box scores.

Landing page: https://dropsetapp.com

Program catalog: https://dropsetapp.com/programs/

Feedback I'm after:

Recovery scoring — genuinely useful, or do you ignore that stuff and just train?

Built-in programs vs building your own — which would you actually use?

What does your current tracker get wrong that nobody's fixed?

Free during closed beta - first 50 waitlist signups get lifetime pro access - few spots remaining. Thanks for reading!

Building the Ultimate 2am App

Thumbnail

I love channels like Fern, Neo, Johnny Harris, Wendover, and all those well-made documentary videos that send you down random rabbit holes.

The problem is I don't always have 20–40 minutes to watch one, and social media usually fills that gap with brain rot instead.

So I'm building an app that turns those kinds of topics into short, high-quality rabbit holes you can read in 5–10 minutes.

need genuine thoughts

After 10 years building open source (Heroic Games Launcher, 20M+ downloads), I built the gym app I always wanted

Hey everyone! I'm Flavio, a Brazilian dev. Some of you might know my main project — Heroic Games Launcher, an open-source game launcher with 20M+ downloads and ~500k MAU.

This past year I built something completely different: HeavyMuscle, a workout tracker for people who lift. I used Jefit and Fitbod for years and kept hitting the same walls — so I built my own, with the things I always wanted:

  • An AI coach (two modes) that builds a full workout from one sentence and adapts to your injuries and equipment
  • Every set pre-filled with your last numbers, plate calculator, auto warm-ups
  • Muscle recovery body map + weekly volume heatmap
  • 100% offline-first — login optional, your data stays yours
  • iOS + Android + watch apps, 6 languages

To keep the training science honest, our small team includes a PhD in exercise science.

Free to start (unlimited workouts, no caps). Site: https://heavymuscle.app

I'd love brutal feedback — the app, onboarding, store pages, anything. I answer everything.
