A friend is renting an apartment at Castle Apartments in midtown. It looks nice from the outside. Anyone have any intel on the place?

I spend a lot of time thinking about the future of Anchorage and Alaska. But getting people to talk or even think about the future in daily life can be surprisingly challenging. Visionaries and forward thinkers of Anchorage, what do you think living in the city will be like in 10 years?

I just got home from the Skid Row Walmart, and I am so fucking frustrated with how customers are treated at that store.

Tonight, I had everything I needed to make a really good dinner. I found two packages of pork stew meat that had been marked down, which matters to me because buying marked-down meat is one of the ways I can actually afford to cook decent meals.

I got apples, onions, barbecue sauce, and everything else I needed.

Then I got to the checkout.

The markdown barcodes on both packages of pork would not scan. The workers tried, but apparently whoever labeled the markdowns did such a poor job that the meat could not be rung up properly. Instead of getting the dinner I had planned and budgeted for, I finally got so frustrated that I left the pork, apples, onions, barbecue sauce, and everything else behind. I bought chips and soda and went home.

And honestly, this is not an isolated experience at this Walmart.

Try buying cold medicine that is locked behind a case. You can stand there waiting forever trying to get someone to unlock it. Sometimes you wait 20 or 30 minutes, and when someone finally comes over, they act like you are inconveniencing them. Like you are wasting their time because you had the nerve to ask them to unlock merchandise that Walmart itself decided to put behind glass.

The attitude from some of the employees is unbelievably rude and disrespectful.

And I have also noticed that depending on what you look like compared with the employee helping you, you can be treated very differently. Some customers are spoken to normally, while others are talked down to, treated like they are stupid, or made to feel like they are somehow a problem just for asking for help.

I understand retail workers are overworked. I understand Walmart can be a miserable company to work for. I am not expecting anyone to roll out a red carpet for me.

But I do expect to be treated like a human being.

I should not have to beg someone to unlock cold medicine.

I should not have to stand around for half an hour while employees act annoyed that I need assistance.

And when Walmart marks food down for sale, I should actually be able to buy the damn food at the price they marked it down to.

Tonight I walked into Walmart planning to make myself a good dinner and walked out with chips and soda because the whole experience became so frustrating that I just gave up.

That is not how customers should be treated.

Hello everyone! Trying to find any information on this boat flag that my mom passed down to me. She was born and raised in Alaska but seemingly no one in our family can identify this flag.

Pretty thorough searching on the internet has turned up nothing so hoping a fellow redditor might recognize it! I can’t seem to find any history of an Alaska Yacht Club or Anchorage Yacht Club, my guess is that it is probably from the 1970s? Thanks all

Came across this driving through town today with my wife. We debated with each other on what exactly the goal or incentive is for the person giving them away. Like are they going to sell a service? I know some cities have free phone programs for underserved and low income families but this hardly looks legit. Any guesses?

Longtime lurker with a nagging memory. Around 2008 there was a sit-down restaurant in Anchorage that was basically the local version of an Applebee's or Chili's — big American menu, booths, casual — but it wasn't one of the national chains. Could've been a local spot or a smaller regional chain.

The detail I remember most clearly: they ran half-price appetizers after 8:00 or 9:00pm.

I've already ruled out Sea Galley, Pepper Mill, Peanut Farm, Gwennie's, Sourdough Mining Co., Snow Goose, Humpy's, F Street, and Bear Paw. Any longtime locals (or former servers) know what I'm talking about? It's driving me crazy.

I was playing for the Glacier Pilots and would often go there after games.

We’ve always thought our neighbor’s homebrewed extensions encroached on our property. They were kind of difficult so we opted to keep it chill and not fight about it. Now they’re selling and it seems like this transition is the time to fix the one extension that blocks sunlight and dumps snowmelt into our yard. So I'm up here on my honeymoon, and I've been lurking for months watching the "where's the best xyz" posts. I've been searching out the best spots for our travel plans, learning tips like not going out on the mudflats, figuring out the gear we need to bring, and where to find the best food. You've all been very helpful for navigating Seward, Denali, Katmai, and Anchorage.

You guys don't fuck around. We've been to the Moose's Tooth four times since the 5th. Each meal has been amazing. We haven't tried the pipeline cake until tonight (we've had almost everything else on the menu ok!), and legitimately it just made me cry. Maybe I'm tired, overwhelmed, still excited to be here, loving the weather, but I put that first bite in my mouth and my whole face just broke into tears. Moose's Tooth slaps, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. Everything else we've eaten everywhere else has been awesome also (thanks to all your recommendations), but there's a reason we keep coming back here.

I've developed my own rating system for chowders. We've had good tacos, tons of good fish dishes, breakfasts, ice cream, hikes, local made souvenirs, and I just picked up a pair of Xtratufs. Idk where I'm going to need those boots in Nevada, but I need them in my life.

You all are amazing, your state is amazing, thank you all for all your recommendations, and I'm so glad to still be here for a couple more days, we still have to hit up the Anchorage museum, the Native Heritage Museum, the wildlife conservation center, and we're going to hike around Kincaid to look for moose.

This is to share a different perspective, since all of my friends and coworkers are consistently complaining these days. And that drains me.

This level of rain is something farmers dream of, as a kid I grew up with adults appreciating the good rain and the joy for the crops it would produce. With that said, I realize anchorage is not home to rural folks, so I’m minority on this mindset. Just thought I’d share the other side.

The lower 48 are in a drought, we live in a life of abundance up here!
