Anyone else struggle/Struggled with over-analyzing and constantly pausing/rewinding episodes? Need advice. Lately, when i'm watching anime or reading manga I'm hyper-fixated on capturing every single detail. I constantly rewind to catch the subtitles, fight scenes, and expressions of the characters perfectly. Like i don't wanna miss out something cool or important that happened in a panel or a scene and want to appreciate whats i'm seeing. I want to feel engaged while watching the anime/ reading the manga so I try to to focus and understand what the characters are feeling, and seeing what they did in the fight. A 20-minute episode takes me like 40 min to finish, a manga volume on a website takes me like an hour and it's pretty exhausting, in the past i didn't have that problem. Why did my brain start doing this, and what do i need to do?
Some anime have a dub in my language, but I don't want to watch it like that because it sounds a bit weird, I enjoy watching it in English or Japanese with subtitles in my language.

u/wloff 10h ago
If you're enjoying it, is there a problem? I do some rewinding too, though not to that degree, and only for shows I really enjoy and wsnt to catch some awesome scene or animation a second time.
But if it's bothering you, depending on how you normally watch anime, maybe try hooking it up to a proper TV once and just physically staying away from the controls? If you make it too difficult and annoying for yourself to rewind, surely you're bound to do it less.

I feel like this isn't such a bad place to be? As opposed to needing to tap something on your phone while watching anime. I think it's great that you can dedicate a lot of attention to one thing.
I used to obsess over individual anime more, but as I got older and just watched more and more shows - the reduction in personal time on top of each show becoming one of an increasing many - I ended up just being more nonchalant with things.

Renge treating adults like peers feels least typical; the odd questions and self-contained games feel much more like a real kid, imo.

Can't remember what show a clip is from. A girl is working at a cafe, then she pretends to not understand japanese by robotically saying something like "sumimasen, nihongo muzukashikute", the cafe owner buys it and he's like "oh yeah right", then after he's like "wait she was just speaking japanese"
Thats all I remember. Big thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

I'm just about to finish what's available of apothecary diaries and I really enjoy it! But I'm also worried of being done - since I always struggle to find/catch onto new shows. Anyone got any ideas? I love witchhat, made in abyss etc. For me art style is just as important as the story. ^
1
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 7h ago
This season's Though I Am an Inept Villainess is very Apothecary Diaries-like. Also try Raven of the Inner Palace and Yatagarasu, which have more fantasy elements.
And it's completely unlike Apothecary Diaries, but try out Kyousougiga if you like style and animation.

I think I'll end up dropping the cat dragon show
It's not bad, but each episode makes me wish they took that first story and made an entire season around it instead

Are there any good video essays about Evangelion? Caught the Death/Rebirth screening and gonna see EoE tomorrow. I’ve seen the whole series (and Rebuild movies) before, though it’s been a bit, but I like sometimes having a long form video in the background and Eva has so much going on having something to listen to and sort it out would be nice.

Yo u/Shimmering-Sky, hit me with your Bleach wallpapers. I've watched up to TYBW episode 31.
They brought back [TYBW part 3]not only Aizen but also Grimmjow! And whole lot of others. No sign yet of the bookmark guy (Tsukushima iirc). Would be funny if they all try to defeat Yhwach and can't, then this chap comes in and makes him think he's his real father and somehow convinces him to stop the madness. Best way to end the Thousand-Year Daddy War. Sadly, don't think it'll go that way. They have to bring that guy and the other one back though. Why make a point of showing us they're in soul society otherwise?

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 17h ago
hit me with your Bleach wallpapers
Here's the full album! It's sorted in the order I made them in, so you can kind of follow along where I was in the show for a while (I made a bunch of them alongside the 2020 rewatch), but then there's also a bunch of jumping around. There's also still some characters I haven't gotten around to yet but really need to at some point.
Oh there's also a few filler characters in there, for the characters you won't recognize while scrolling.
The very last image in there is why I wanted to wait just to be safe.

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 15h ago
Chair-sama!! These are all really good. I love the Gin ones; the smirk really comes through in all of them. Senbonsakura just looks amazing always. Your Renji love really shows. And smug boi of course. Love the whole album.
Did I miss them or are there no wallpapers of Yhwach?

Haven't done him yet. The last two are the only TYBW-related wallpapers I’ve made so far.

Can anyone who's read the original Sparks of Tomorrow novel chime in an tell me how they're doing with the adaptation? Since it's KyoAni with a novel, I expect significant changes to the story, and I would like to know it you think they are for the better or worse.

u/oedipusrex376 13h ago
1
u/amd_hunt 12h ago
Unfortunate for them. Seems the tweet was made before the show actually aired anywhere, and it’s Kyoani so the entire season’s probably already finished. The novel is only one volume long, so this season might be the entire story. I wonder if there’s going to be any controversy stemming from this or the rest of the episodes.

Latest Star Detective Precure episode was absolute cinema. No notes from me.
1
u/Donnie-G 11h ago
I feel like the episodes leading up to the whole "Who is Eclair" shenanigans kinda made it too obvious who it was going to be. [Star Detective Precure]I'm also slightly annoyed at my own lack of observation skills. I initially didn't even know there were "Eclair candidates". When Shiruku showed up, I was like yup, that's Eclair(and sadly she's not). The other three didn't even register to me. It was only later through twitter discourse that i discovered that it was a 'thing'. I was also half expecting the answer to be 'all of them' or 'none of them' so I'm slightly sad that it ended up being kinda straightforward.

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 10h ago
Yeah I mean it’s kids programming, I wasn’t expecting a big mind-blowing surprise, but still, the way everything just came together was so good.

I'd be interested in what comes out as your favorite of the season, when you've finished em. I have a clear top three, with Nakamura, Witch Hat Atelier, and Awajima being the best of the new spring series. I think if I was going on which show had the complete package with nothing I would change, I'd give it to Nakamura. I enjoyed it as much as Polar Opposites, which would have topped my Winter list if not for the excellence that was Ikoku Nikki. That one still the best of the year, so far.
2
u/theangryeditor 18h ago
Ikoku Nikki is still my AOTY at the moment without a doubt.
For Spring I'd say Awajima and Candy Caries are my favourites with an honourable mention to Nakamura. WHA is good but has yet to hit me on a deeper level. NGO is the only wildcard left since I've only watched up to episode 7, and while I'm interested in what it's been doing up to that point it too has yet to resonate in a rawer place. But I'll see how I feel about it once it's all said and done.
I also enjoyed Lulutto Lilly, Nippon Sangoku, and Ramparts. Marriagetoxin had its fun parts and uninteresting parts. Akane-Banashi got better towards the end. Kirio was a thoroughly mixed bag and more miss than hit for me. Did not care for Kamiina Botan. Yomi no Tsugai makes me wish I was killed in Higashi village at the start. Liar Game is really bad but also really good. Tanteicure has been kinda meh overall but the Cure Eclair arc has been good. Digimon Beatbreak takes the story to some interesting places but the character drama has a lot of room for improvement and the pacing is borked. Kozame and Rilakkuma are nice and comfy.
I think that's everything I followed in Spring.
1
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 17h ago
WHA is good but has yet to hit me on a deeper level.
This is how I feel about it too. I enjoy it on the same level as Frieren, which is the most comparable show I've watched in recent years, but I am more enamored with the world in WHA than I am the characters, which is the reverse for Frieren. With Frieren, I like the world well enough, but the journey and characters take center stage and are more engaging. Different strengths for similar shows, that ended up enjoying equally.
Yomi no Tsugai makes me wish I was killed in Higashi village at the start.
I'm still holding out hope it can materialize some level of hype for me, but the last episode really is reminding us all all that it stands in the shadow of a greatness that came before. Twice.

[Odd Taxi Episode 11]At the start of the episode, we get some good characterization on Nikaidou and the formation of Mystery Kiss. Makes sense for Nikaidou to hate losing, and the idea of losing the center to Yuki would be unbearable. Her calling out to ask her to step down from the center. But by calling her, you can see the guilt she felt. Yuki would be alive if she didn't call her out.
[Odd Taxi Episode 11]It's that guilt where you can understand her relationship with Baba. He's the sort of dork she needs to forget about all of her troubles. The concerning thing is that Sakura mentions she got 4th place in the tryouts, and she got connected after Yano's side got involved. I think it seems clear that she is the boss's friend's daughter.
[Odd Taxi Episode 11]As Gouriki is learning more about Hiroshi. It seemed that Hiroshi's parents committed a double suicide, and the fact that Hiroshi made it out alive was luck. Though it seems he has no memories of that incident. Curious what Hiroshi wrote in that notebook if it holds clues.

Your Spoilers tags aren't working.
But I feel like it has good ideas; just the execution is off. Strangely, things are just happening so fast. I wanted more time for the leads to build a dynamic, but now Yosuke is being pushed even more, and in a way, I am not a fan of.
I will stick with the anime; I just hope it doesn't become An Agents of the Seasons for me.

u/mekerpan 16h ago
I loved Agents, but find Sparks virtually unwatchable story-wise and character-wise (which includes dialog-wise). An insane mis-match between visual quality and content quality.
1
u/oedipusrex376 15h ago
I haven't watched the 3rd episode yet, but the show is starting to lose me in the 2nd episode. [Ep2] It spends roughly 70% of the episode chasing the girl and the book, with the only real plot progression happening in the last 30%. The vibe is kinda off, like it's trying so hard to be goofy that it forgets to move the story forward. And when it does, it happens in a rather contrived way, with Kengo (the tall guy) coincidentally finding out about the book and that the MC is his little brother. It just feels unsatisfying. I wish they had spent more time polishing the story and animation so the two could complement each other.
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 18h ago
During the third episode I just kept thinking about how far Inako is going for a guy that I'm fairly certain she just met by chance? Or if there was some sort of connection between them they're not exactly selling it well.

100 Girlfriends really went there. Bravo.

u/ptd163 17h ago
If you're waiting until all 100 girlfriends are in the anime you'll probably be waiting in the ballpark of another 15-20 years. At 37, we're still waiting for another 63 girlfriends. At the current pace of 9 chapters per girlfriend that's another 567 chapters which is over 10 years. That's just for the source material. Then there's all the waiting for each season to be produced.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 20h ago

You and I are Polar Opposites is my favorite romance anime since Kaguya-sama, this show is so beyond cute at times.
5
u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 20h ago
Polar Opposites is an interesting one because I do think it's becoming one of my favorite romcoms ever but it's like almost in a death by 1000 cuts type of way.
There's not like a ton of definitive "I'll remember this" scenes, and none of the couples are my absolute favorites in anime (although I love them all) but everything is just so well done from the music to the really relatable takes on characters and situations, and how well characterized their personalities are and their dynamics between each other. Like the only real critique for me is sometimes it overexplains itself, so each episode feels a bit denser than it has to be.
But yeah, it's insanely cute and there are so many great characters. It's a really clear cut 9/10 series in my book.
6
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 19h ago
It doesn't have flash highs, but it's really, really consistent. Which tbh majority of RomComs can't even get that consistency, let alone quality.
5
u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT 19h ago
I only ended up watching the first episode but I’d say a “flash high” moment was her in the bathroom taking a break from people. It was very standout in how human it felt.

u/PGleo86 https://myanimelist.net/profile/PGleo86 21h ago
Found myself staring at the play button for today's KimiShinu for almost as long as it would've taken me to just watch the damn episode. Not a great sign this early into the season... and thus, dropped. Premise sounded interesting but I just don't think it translates into something I actually want to watch.
5
u/marshmallow_sunshine 19h ago
And you gave This Monster Wants to Eat Me such a high score too! I think they share some similar themes regarding loss & finding things to live for. A melancholic setting with the ever looming threat of death mixed in with light-hearted moments.
2
u/PGleo86 https://myanimelist.net/profile/PGleo86 17h ago
Honestly, a lot of that show's rating came from how INCREDIBLE the audio design is. I was saying it every chance I got while it was airing - watching it with a high end sound system completely transforms the experience. I could see This Monster... getting the drop treatment too if the production were the same as KimiShinu.
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 20h ago
As someone who read the manga (at least the official translations), it felt like the idea is more interesting than the execution.
[Light KimiShinu Manga Spoilers]I would categorize it more as a tragedy than a dark fantasy if I were to promote it. I wished they would explore the world, but rather we stay at the school. I do think the emotional storytelling is there, but to be quite frank, it isn't a series I care to revisit a 2nd time after reading the manga. Would add if they portrayed Mimi well, they would really have to showcase her childish personality. Considering the romance progress, it might feel more uncomfortable to watch than it was to read.
1
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 14h ago
Oh, they’re portraying Mimi childish enough for better or worse, so no worries on that front lol. Personally I love that, so far, the show is limiting the worldbuilding to the school and its characters, because on one hand it makes it more focused and streamlined and on the other hand it makes the “outside world” way more intruiging and mysterious by not really telling us anything which allows the viewer to wonder about all the concrete circumstances surrounding it.
1
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 20h ago
That one is a weirdo for me. I don't enjoy it, but I don't want to drop it either. It's not a hate watch, it's more like morbid curiosity.
3
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 19h ago
I feel like it would be a better watch if it wasn't a romance.
4
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 18h ago
I have to admit that I find the
kissinghealing scenes repellent. I straight up never want to be that close to characters' mouths. Zoom tf out. Also kinda funny to watch two seasons after Bean Counter. Kissing to heal? How quaint. My boy got his back blown out in episode two to treat an overdose.
2
u/PGleo86 https://myanimelist.net/profile/PGleo86 19h ago
I kinda feel that same way, but with zero draw to actually watch it. No clue how else to explain it. It's like, I know once I open the episode it'd at least pass 20 minutes just fine and I'm not uninterested in the story, but... I just don't like watching it. If I'd rather stare at the option to start the episode for 20 minutes away it goes. Maybe I'm a bit too trigger-happy on that since I've had 20+ seasonals for the last 3 seasons in a row now? Definitely has felt heavier than the previous couple years.
1
u/Korkez11 21h ago
I'm trying to guess in which prefecture Non Non Biyori takes place and it's difficult because the climate there is weird. In one episode it shows snowless (and even pretty greenish) New Year's Eve and the very next episode has a blizzard.
Probably Hokkaido though. There's definitely no blizzards in southern prefectures.

It's a completely meaningless statistic, but Crunchyroll finally dubbing those two sets of specials for The Quintessential Quintuplets has brought my total number of anime on MAL (i.e. including watching/PTW/etc) up to an even 500. I still haven't actually watched that series yet, which I guess is a good thing in this case.

Nice, I was hoping they would get around to it someday.

To be fair, they didn't even have them, period, until somewhat recently. So while it's weird that they weren't there in the first place, I can't blame them too much for the pace.
(And while this is good news, it does make me wonder once again wtf is going on with Kaguya.)

u/oedipusrex376 22h ago
Recently watched a whole season of MariMite (Maria Watches Over Us), and I enjoyed it. It's pretty much the quintessential Class S anime, and an important piece to watch if you want to understand the trope. The show can get dramatic at times, but it's not the over-the-top kind of dramatic you get with Oniisama e. Not that I hate that kind of drama though (I like dramatic).
The intro of the first episode cracked me up. It has that infamous Fate/Zero intro where everyone's walking around having serious conversations about things I have absolutely no context for. Like, they're throwing terms like sœur and bouton at you in the first minute of the show. The best part is the aesthetic. I've spent forever looking for another anime with the same elegant style as Kageki Shoujo!!, and I finally found one. Even the character designs have those sharp, ikemen chins I always associate with Gintama and Mouryou no Hako.
Some parts are really funny. I think it was [Episode 9] where it had this anime trope of a character adoring someone they've known since kindergarten. I don't know why, but that setup always feels absurd to me. It expects a kindergartener to have this grand perspective on someone, which I find kind of hilarious.
This is so ridiculously my type of show. Might even buy the entire light novel volumes.
2
u/zambonijesus 21h ago
I watched the first two seasons earlier this year and while I am definitely not the target audience, I found it really interesting from a learning more about where tropes came from point-of-view and will watch the rest of it eventually.

u/Jusenkyo_5 22h ago
Keep us updated as you go through the seasons, I've had my eye on this show for like 10+ years and I'm curious to see if you're happy with it all the way through.

We're at that part of the season where anything I'm not actively watching has been preemptively dropped. Sorry to Ghost in the Shell and Witch in Mongolia, a combined 7 episodes behind will put you on the PTW list with the other 2,000 seasonals that I've skipped over the years.

Hey, it's me, back again with another crazy, incoherent rant about Hibike: Euphonium!.
Because for some goddamn reason I can't get this school concert band anime out of my mind.
(Seriously, the hell is wrong with me? Why am I taking this show so hard? I still find myself randomly thinking about [S3]Episode 12 and then I'll start choking up out of nowhere. It's getting kinda tiring.)
Anyway, my agenda for today: Taki-sensei. The piece of shit.
A really well-written and believable character, but man, do I hate his guts.
[Hibike! S1-S3]He's a fine conductor -- he must be, the results speak for themselves. But as a teacher, a leader, an instructor? Just as a music director in general? Absolute garbage.
[Hibike! S1-S3]When we first met him in S1 and he started causing chaos with his weird antics, I thought his smile and soft demeanor were hiding some kind of a hidden genius. But no, it turns out he just doesn't know what he's doing, and he's hiding his insecurity.
[Hibike! S1-S3]Yeah, initially he had the defense that he's new as a teacher, he was in a new situation, and he was making newbie mistakes. His first year, that's totally valid. But his third year... not so much. He's just repeating his same mistakes, over and over again -- no, he's making them even worse. After everything that happened with Kaori and Reina in the first year, how the FUCK do you make the exact same mistake again? How do you again unceremoniously drop the respected, admired and beloved senior in favor of an unknown newcomer and ONCE AGAIN give absolutely zero explanation as to why? How do you NOT realize by now that you're going to cause massive resentment, confusion, loss of motivation, and loss of focus in the band? And ONCE AGAIN when you clearly see it's happening, you do ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL about it? Just let the bad vibes and resentment simmer while you keep your fake smile on and pretend that everything is fine? If it wasn't for Kumiko being an absolute superstar, with god-tier humility and leadership, and salvaging the cohesion of the band -- which would have been YOUR job, by the way, Taki-sensei -- your competition journey would have ended right then and there.
[Hibike! S1-S3]And yet! And yet! In the third audition, you SOMEHOW MAKE IT EVEN WORSE! Clearly you realized you fucked up, you want to restore Kumiko as the soloist, but somehow now you're scared shitless and such a massive pussy that you no longer can even take responsibility. So you make it a popular vote. In the process, you rip to shreds what little you had left of your credibility. You're saying that the two are too close for you to call, so what again was the reason for tearing down the president in the first place? Did you NOT have a vision that absolutely required Mayu to play the soli? What the fuck was all that chaos for, if at the end of the day, you would have been equally fine with having Kumiko play it?
[Hibike! S1-S3]Here's how you do it if you're actually a teacher, or a band director, who isn't completely trash. You hold the audition, closed or open, whatever. Then you sit down the players -- possibly the band too, but at the very least the players -- and you explain the decision like a goddamn adult. "I'm picking Mayu to play the soli, because X, Y and Z. These are Mayu's strengths and weaknesses, these are Kumiko's strengths and weaknesses, this is why I think Mayu should be the one to play the part." That's all it takes. Yes, there's going to be some sadness and disappointment, but everyone knows what the goal is and everyone would have gone along. But no, because Taki-sensei is such an incompetent piece of shit who has zero clue what he's doing, he damn near lets the whole band explode in his face, and it's only thanks to Kumiko's heroics that the outcome is salvaged.
[Hibike! S1-S3]"But, u/wloff", I hear you say, "surely you're being way to harsh. Yeah, he made mistakes, but Kumiko covered for him, and he does bring home the gold in the end. All's well that ends well, right? Maybe he's a bit incompetent as a teacher, but surely that's not enough to say you actually hate him?"
[Hibike! S1-S3]And I say, no. It's not that he's incompetent. It's the fact that his incompetence keeps hurting his students. More than anyone, he's hurting Kumiko so much, all throughout the third year. Can you imagine how fucking humiliating it is for him to unceremoniously drop the president from playing the euph soli part? No explanation, no rationale given, just, "oh, by the way, I'm giving what's essentially a slap in the face and a vote of no confidence to your president"? And the same thing in the absolute travesty that was the blind audition. Can you imagine the feeling of having to stand in front of the rest of the band, seeing who voted for whom, and having to face the defeat that way? Just because he's too much of a weak, insecure pussy to take charge of the situation, act like the adult in the room, and explain why he chose who he chose, and still confirm that he has great trust and respect for Kumiko? 'Cause, in case you missed it, he never ever fucking does that.
[Hibike! S1-S3]Taki-sensei owes so much to Kumiko. Without her, the band would've fallen apart. Without her, they wouldn't have made it through the prefecturals, let alone won gold in the nationals. And all he ever did for her was beat her down, humiliate her, and force her to do what should have been his job all along. Not out of malice, sure, but out of sheer incompetence. And that's only slightly better.
Whewwwwww...
Anyway. That's off my chest now. Sorry about that.
Also, Kumiko is AMAZING.
Also, go vote for Kumiko.

I'm generally used to stories where the coach/teachers are useful or helpful for their clubs (Haikyuu, K-on mostly off the top of my head) so how much the band had to work against Taki was certainly a surprise. Agree that he was a very poor excuse for a teacher, though admittedly it allowed Kumiko to shine even brighter sooooooo

Walkure Romanze is... not half bad. I was expecting the ecchi to be a lot heavier, but it's really not that bad. I've seen worse. The comedy is pretty hilarious when it lands, and sometimes it has the same kind of dry humor as Yuru Yuri. The visuals and fantasy setting are gorgeous, too. If the quality keeps up, this might be the second show after Ganbatte Ikimasshoi! that I've liked with a score under 6.5 on MAL.

It's impossible to understate how much of an inside job these Crunchyroll awards are. Even when they give awards to actual gems like Odd Taxi instead of battle shounen #2643, it's only because Odd Taxi was produced by Crunchyroll. Takopi's Original Sin, on the other hand, wasn't produced by Crunchyroll so it got a donut hole.
Also they once nominated fucking In/Spectre for the best OP or something, lmao.

Just finished Denpa Onna and it did not land with me. I do think this might be one of the anime that I would have enjoyed more if I was 10 years younger. But I found majority of characters really annoying and distracting. Like characters of MHA are unique, but they're indivially not distracting. But characters in this show felt really distracting. Like, let's make 10 different noises while we talk and let me do this gesture why we talk.

[Odd Taxi Episode 10]It really shows the evolution of the internet that you can figure out a person's home with pictures from the internet. It is a reminder to be careful of what you post online because someone could very well figure out your home.
[Odd Taxi Episode 10]Hiroshi is quite lucky that Miho was around. It's interesting from her words that Dobu has his own justice. Now the thing is, while we know he is a diligent worker, is there some bias here? After all, at the end of the day, we know Dobu is a criminal. Still, could he be brainwashed by his boss? Well, it is not out of the realm of possibility. Interestingly, the phone that Yuki left was replaced by a tracker. More than likely, Tanaka. With how the episode ends, there is more to Yuki than meets the eye.
[Odd Taxi Episode 10]Dobu's plan seems to have Yano pick up the 1 billion yen, but in reality it is 1/10 of it. Meaning only 100 million yen. It seems the plan is laid out for Dobu to steal the 900 million yen easily. But his declaration of war, aka his ego, wants him to even take the final 100 million yen. The plan is definitely a lot just for that final case. The plan is dependent on the little police officer helping and Yano taking the counterfeit money.
[Odd Taxi Episode 10]It's quite interesting to see Hiroshi coordinating things with both the idol manager and Shun. It gives the feeling this story will try to go for is that everyone is a victim in some way. Either from someone or a victim from themselves.

Decided to not watch seasonals this time because I kept falling behind last season when I didn't even watch much. But Jaadugar girl is tempting me every day from the side bar. Lara also seems to be everywhere on my social media feed.
Did finally finish a series from my 2026 short list with Nodame Cantabile S1 though. Expected it to be a bit more grounded drama heavy. But it's pretty light with its comedy and eccentric characters. Of course characters have to face themselves and grow, but with every stumble you feel like it will be alright. A new chance right around the corner. Very easy comfort food esque watch with that. Even though it also pulls a bunch of drama staples I’m not a fan of with overhearing a private conversation or getting sick at the wrong moment. Also really not a fan of Stresemann and his harassment which made certain scenes in the first half pretty rough.
Bit of a pity that the animation lets the performances down. No idea how good the music actually is, but it sounded good to me. But the performances are very limited visually. And then I don't even mind the CGI hands, because then at least you've some movement. And I'm always in for some postcard memories (and I fully believe modern anime should use it more often). But outside of that there isn't really much going on. Did make me interested in going to a concert again, so hey the performances and the characters did still sell it enough. Anyway on to s2.

u/mekerpan 16h ago
Stressemann seems important in terms of certain story needs, but I would say his rather extreme behavioral traits can be disturbing. One wonders if the mangaka did not have some problematic real world model(s) in mind.
4
u/GondolaMedia zj: 1d ago
I'm 19 episodes in to S1 and echo lot of your points. Stresemann was rough.
I actually quite like the performances being so limited visually because they mostly let the music do the talking. You got your monologues and reaction shots of course but it's not excessive like some other anime about orchestras.
2
u/Puddo x3https://anilist.co/user/STPuddo 20h ago
Hmm, yes it does fit it's all a bit subdued and turning it into blood pumping stuff would certainly feel off. And to be fair the few times I've watched an orchestra live I've noticed I often look at the ceiling or whatever just to be able to focus better on sound of the entire orchestra. Still as an animation fan I do love me some character animation, so I could always do with more.

Actually, to follow-up from earlier, I don’t know how good “your tastes have changed” necessarily explains away people saying “anime doesn’t hit the same as it used to”.
This implies that if I were to go back and watch more of the same shows from the same time period that I thought was great, that I wouldn’t like them, which in my experience isn’t usually what happens.
I think more realistically it is that anime has changed. Not necessarily gotten worse, mind you, but has changed. The person making the post got into the game for a very specific set of reasons and industry circumstances and if that changes, it wouldn’t be too strange for them to think the new stuff is worse.
6
u/OldGoldDream 23h ago
There's a simple answer to this: you got older.
The vast majority of anime are adaptations or originals in the shounen/shoujo demographic, meaning they are aimed at teens or adolescents. If you're no longer a teen or adolescent they might not appeal to you as much.

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 23h ago
I mean the point is that’s not necessarily true. Your media tastes are formed in your teen years, sure to some extent it might be a matter of aging, but I’ve known guys who will go and watch new shows from the 90s or 00s or what not in the same genres as there favorites and have that same reaction that “things were better then”. So in some ways it is nostalgia, just more for a broader style than a specific show, and that’s kinda how taste works after a certain point. People’s media tastes don’t drastically change after your mid-20s because the nostalgia but for those old times become almost too strong (or as we would say “their tastes have solidified”)
2
u/North514 20h ago
I mean the point is that’s not necessarily true.
It is true for most people. Like even for myself, someone who doesn't mind YA writing, it does get more tiring on me, compared to the past. Romance especially, has to hit a very high bar for me to care, whereas when I was pre teen/teen I would watch every romance anime that interested me.
This is notable in most other media spaces, where people will age up with their fiction. A common example is going from Harry Potter to LOTR, to A Song of Ice and Fire.
You eventually want stuff that can cater to your current demographic, what you are dealing with in the here and now. I can empathize with youth, however, I am not youthful anymore. It's fun to return to that however, if you only linger in it, that can become tiring. And yeah, there is a lot out there, that isn't YA however, most is, and I can get feel a bit out of touch, with what the medium is shoving usually in your face, and needing a pallet cleanser.
I mean sure you know guys however, how many guys out there, just literally quit the medium because they feel they are done with anime/manga as a concept, because they feel it's too YA?
I would say that is very high.
1
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 21h ago
“their tastes have solidified”
This is not about age, it's about receptiveness to trying new things. Being closed-minded or unwilling to try new things is a personality trait you find in all age groups. Some people only like one thing. Some people are generalists. Taste is unique to the individual.
4
u/North514 1d ago
Nostalgia is very important though, you can't discount that. Would I still love classic DB today, to the degree I do, if I didn't have the fond memories of watching it on youtube in 480p back in the day? Probably not. You can't actually know.
This implies that if I were to go back and watch more of the same shows from the same time period that I thought was great, that I wouldn’t like them, which in my experience isn’t usually what happens.
Your experience however, I do think there are a lot of people whose experiences would be very different. The average person who makes this statement isn't combing through the vast amount of stuff, that came out in that decade. And if they did, actually, try watching a lot of that, I don't think they would enjoy it that much. I did start doing that years ago, and yeah like for every Dominion Tank Police, I get a Dallos too.....
I think more realistically it is that anime has changed.
Sure...that said...2010s>2020s, honestly this feels like the decade that has changed the least. So that, I don't get. There really isn't much distinguishing the 2010s from now, which is unlike any other decade of anime before.
7
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
There really isn't much distinguishing the 2010s from now
I think this is wrong lol.
It's not as obvious, but there are differences. On the genre front, mecha is pretty much entirely dead, romance has shifted much more into the "girlfriend simulator" sub-genre and isekai is way bigger and more prevalent now (in all its forms). Battle Shounen has also massively changed. Long-running shows are non-existent (even OP now takes large hiatuses), and there's way more of them. The mid 2010s barely had any new traditional Battle Shounen until My Hero Academia and Black Clover, and the latter was not exactly received well on launch.
Styles and formats have also changed. Demon Slayer made a shit ton of money and so shows moved into having more digital effects to create a more "realistic" style to varying degrees of success (as opposed to more "harder" styles like were popular across the 2010s). Demon Slayer also made a shit ton of money (did I mention that) which along with Your Name's success in 2016 has reinvigorated high-profile anime films which were largely dormant across the previous decade (only really picking up at the very end). Canon movies have also become more prevalent as well as ONAs for less traditionally feasible ideas or runtimes.
Pretty much every studio at this point has adopted 1-2 big "tentpole" franchises that they can then siphon money from to other smaller projects, since adaptations have dominated the discussion and the TV market's saturation makes it really difficult to get a show without an established fanbase through to being a breakout hit.
Not to mention that animation styles have also changed as a lot of new gen animators come in and have started to in the last few years embrace looser styles in their sakuga cuts.
So yeah, there are a lot of ways in which the 2020s have changed over the 2010s. They're maybe not as grand as previous decades, but for an industry seemingly reaching its maturation point, that's not too surprising.

It's not as obvious, but there are differences. On the genre front, mecha is pretty much entirely dead,
Dude....that was true in the 2010s too. Just like in the 2010s, you have Gundam going strong, and the occasional show that gets some traction like Frankxx in the 2010s or 86 in the 2020s. Mecha was basically on it's last legs in the late 2000s, in terms of being a big relevant genre, in the medium. Most of it's peak was before digital animation even got going. The death of mecha, was a 2010 trend, that the 2020s largely continued, with the rare case of success.
isekai is way bigger and more prevalent now (in all its forms)
It was highly prevalent in the 2010s too, and I do actually think it's slowly going down in favor of more traditional fantasy. This is not a major change.
romance has shifted much more into the "girlfriend simulator" sub-genre and isekai is way bigger and more prevalent now
These are are very very subtle changes, and personally I don't feel romance is that different but I am not as invested into modern romance, as most so outside of saying, I don't notice it much in some of the bigger ones I have actually watched...that is about it.
Long-running shows are non-existent (even OP now takes large hiatuses), and there's way more of them.
That was also dying by the 2010s. So again yeah not a new change.
The mid 2010s barely had any new traditional Battle Shounen until My Hero Academia and Black Clover, and the latter was not exactly received well on launch.
So then the 2020s are a return to form, and if we are talking about the decade as whole you need to include DS, and even works like Fire Force were at least relevant when they came out, and were not drastically different in terms of the formula.
Styles and formats have also changed. Demon Slayer made a shit ton of money and so shows moved into having more digital effects to create a more "realistic" style to varying degrees of success (as opposed to more "harder" styles like were popular across the 2010s).
Artistically however, these are subtle changes. If you showed me a show from the 70s, 80s, 90s or 2000s I could identify it by the decade, based on the character design, I could not do that as effectively in the 2010s to 2020s. They look different from everything up to the 2000s but from each other? There isn't a significant difference. Shows like The Apothecary Diaries or Frieren could have come out in the 2010s too. And I mean, tons of fans can't even distinguish 80s anime from 90s anime, which have significant artistic departures...you really think they are going to find the way more subtle differences in the 2010s to 2020s?
Demon Slayer also made a shit ton of money (did I mention that) which along with Your Name's success in 2016 has reinvigorated high-profile anime films
For a select few works, and again, while sure you get high budget battle shonen films, really the only notable change is they are adapting canonical main story plot lines, and again, the stories themselves and art styles are not different from what has come before.
And, I don't actually think the anime film industry is that much healthier. It's still in a pretty weak spot, though sure a bit better from the last decade.
Pretty much every studio at this point has adopted 1-2 big "tentpole" franchises that they can then siphon money from to other smaller projects, since adaptations have dominated the discussion and the TV market's saturation makes it really difficult to get a show without an established fanbase through to being a breakout hit.
I guess I would like to hear examples of that, and how that differs from how the studio operated in the past. At best this is really a case of we are getting more sequels....which fine. I don't think that is going to impact how a fan sees the wider decade though.
Not to mention that animation styles have also changed as a lot of new gen animators come in and have started to in the last few years embrace looser styles in their sakuga cuts.
In some action works, sure, maybe I can notice that, however, I still feel like that was something that was trending in the late 2010s too.
So yeah, there are a lot of ways in which the 2020s have changed over the 2010s. They're maybe not as grand as previous decades, but for an industry seemingly reaching its maturation point, that's not too surprising.
Yeah but unless you are looking for it, which you seem to do, I don't think most would notice that much of a difference. Which is what I am really getting at, not that you can't notice changes.
Like am I saying there have been no changes? Of course not, for instance, female targeted media, I think has been doing better this decade, compared to the pretty bad 2010s however, a lot of these are pretty subtle, or only matter if you care about that specific niche. There are no wide sweeping changes, and that is why, compared to past decades, the 2020s are notable in how little has changed, compared to say even the big shift between the 2000s and 2010s.

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 23h ago
Just like in the 2010s, you have Gundam going strong, and the occasional show that gets some traction like Frankxx in the 2010s or 86 in the 2020s
No. There were a few series in the 2010s, many of which started strong and burnt out in spectacular fashion.
The 2020s thus far across seven years pretty much just has two seasons of 86 (outside of Gundam) and even the spider mechs are closer to Tachikoma than classic giant fighting robots. Mecha was dying in the 2000s and it died in full with the 2010s.
It was highly prevalent in the 2010s too, and I do actually think it's slowly going down in favor of more traditional fantasy
That last part is true, but the first part is not. You had your trendsetters like SAO, Konosuba and Re:Zero but it wasn’t until the tail end of the decade where the swill really started to take root and eventually blow up in the 2020s. To paraphrase Mother’s Basement in Fall 2019 (when a record 6 isekai were airing that season) “guys I don’t know if we can handle more isekai a season” (then the next half a decade would blow that number out of proportion).
That was also dying by the 2010s. So again yeah not a new change
Again, “dying” and “dead” are two different things. One Piece was still airing weekly, Naruto and Boruto did the same, and Pierrot even tried it with BC in 2017 (which honestly sort of worked) but by 2022 the last of those besides OP dipped, and in 2024 OP started to take massive breaks eventually leading to its new pseudo-seasonal release model.
if we are talking about the decade as whole you need to include DS
It would be as disingenuous to say that DS was indicative of 2010s anime as it would be to say that Gundam was indicative of 1970s anime or One Piece of 90s anime.
Artistically however, these are subtle changes
But they are still changes. I didn’t say they were big changes, just that they were certainly changes.
I could not do that as effectively in the 2010s to 2020s
Something like Angel Beats does not look like something you’d see today. A lot of that style of digital color grading largely does not exist today, so there are examples where this certainly holds true.
the stories themselves and art styles are not different from what has come before
I didn’t mention it, but this also isn’t true. The post-Attack on Titan wave of “dark Shounen” didn’t hit Jump’s pages until the late-2010s and wouldn’t be adapted to screen until the start of JJK in 2020. When people are calling out a character like Yaiba for being essentially an old-fashion Shounen protag, things have absolutely changed.
1
u/lalunafelis 20h ago
A lot of that style of digital color grading largely does not exist today
Not to start anything, but can you explain how? I can't really tell how digital color grading nowadays differ unless they are emulating pre-digital cel style.
when people are calling out a character like Yaiba for being essentially an old-fasion Shounen protag, things have absolutely changed.
I'd more say in Yaiba's case that it's less than that and more that he's a child character acting like a child in a comedy show and not a mini adult and had the disadvantage of not having the goodwill shield of nostalgia like Naruto or kid Goku. Other protags with the same personality type, even retro ones get a pass when they're a young adult/adult, mostly in a prestige tragedy.
1
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 20h ago
Not to start anything, but can you explain how?
A lot of shows across the 2010s, especially out of the battle harem and similar genres really couldn't help themselves with colored light, oversaturated colors and that glossy, gradient hair that is just a gradient and then the one line of hair reflection or whatever you want to call it.
Shows like K, The Irregular at Magic High School, Myriad Colors Phantom World, Dusk Maidens, The Asterisk War, Divine Gate, Black Bullet, No Game No Life, The Fruits of Grisaisa, Accel World, MM! and Baka and Test are a few that come to mind. Like, GoHands caught shit for it, but they were far from the only ones. Even as late as 2016 you've got shows like Prince of Stride: Alternative and Servamp that are varying degrees of this.
That's not even bringing up the other style trends like the brightly colored hair, big eyes, and overly detailed hair (think Is This a Zombie?, Haganai, Maid Sama or even Highschool DxD) that carried over from the 2000s and stayed longer than it should have.
It'd be wrong to necessarily say that anime was brighter since the trend was more that these shows were "darker" (really edgier tbh), but colors were often way more saturated and pronounced than these days when things are much more washed out and neutrally lit. A lot more pastels or muted tones. There are exceptions sure, but these tend to be the stand outs for a reason.
2
u/North514 21h ago edited 21h ago
No. There were a few series in the 2010s, many of which started strong and burnt out in spectucular fashion.
The 2020s thus far across seven years pretty much just has two seasons of 86 (outside of Gundam) and even the spider mechs are closer to Tachikoma than classic giant fighting robots. Mecha was dying in the 2000s and it died in full with the 2010s.
Gridman and Brave Bang Bravern! exist. Also so what? Mecha fans have counted shows like Bubblegum Crisis as mecha too.
And again, nah, like don't pull this oh a few series. This is literally fighting over scraps. The last decade, that had a decent size list of good mecha anime, was the 2000s, and many of those didn't straight up burn out either. No mecha fan, is going to say the genre was doing great in the 2010s....it sucked, whether it sucks more or not, the fact is they both sucked, in both decades, therefore not a new trend. There is a major difference in what that genre offered even in the 2000s (which wasn't exactly a great decade for it either), compared to the 2010s and 2020s, the shift was in the 2000s to the 2010s.
Again, “dying” and “dead” are two different things.
They really aren't. What they indicate is no substantial change, which is what I argued, not there is no change. I am not arguing the medium doesn't change, I just don't think it would notable for the person you are talking about.
Naruto was at the end of it's run in the early/mid 2010s, BC didn't blow up and Boruto... yeah same. It was pretty much dead. And again, OP still was airing weekly right into the 2020s as you literally pointed out. All the major new battle shonen starting to air in the 2010s went to a weekly model, the trend started there. I mean I remember being shocked, as a fan getting back into anime, that battle shonen now aired in a seasonal format, rather than the one I grew up with.
It would be as disingenuous to say that DS was indicative of 2010s anime as it would be to say that Gundam was indicative of 1970s anime or One Piece of 90s anime.
Well then we might as well kill this discussion entirely because decades don't really serve as an appropriate time frame anyway. Frankly every early part of the decade is different from the latter half.
But they are still changes. I didn’t say they were big changes, just that they were certainly changes.
Well great that I am not arguing there were no changes, only that it hasn't change much in a noteworthy way, and most people, who don't hyper analyze these trends, aren't going to notice them.
Something like Angel Beats does not look like something you’d see today. A lot of that style of digital color grading largely does not exist today, so there are examples where this certainly holds true.
Ah so you complain about me cherry picking DS, for being more like anime in the 2020s and then do the same thing. Fair lol, if only that this undermines your original point, that battle shonen was lacking in the 2010s. If you want me to say most, then I will say that. Find me numerous ones like it, that aired throughout the decade and you might have a point. I will give you Angels Beats is a rare exception of a series looking more like an anime that came in the 2000s. It still had the lingering lay over. Most are very distinct.
And that change, is really just going back to older shifts in battle shonen. Honestly it's less dark action shonen, and more the significant shift to urban fantasy to me that is more noticeable in that genre. Even still, this isn't as significant in massive changes to art style, entire genres rising and dying like sci fi and the school life/SOL focus of the 2000s or any other major shift.
I mean you yourself admit there is less change, which is what I am saying. Whether we agree on the degree is kinda irrelevant and more about feels, outside of your point on mecha cause that dude....is just wrong lol. I have been around, and just anecdotally, the move into the 2010s felt more significant to me, than this decade. That is all I can say really.

Gridman
Which was more just carry over from the 2010s anyway
The last decade, that had a decent size list of good mecha anime, was the 2000s, and many of those didn't straight up burn out either. No mecha fan, is going to say the genre was doing great in the 2010s....it sucked, whether it sucks more or not, the fact is they both sucked, in both decades, therefore not a new trend
Never said it was doing great, but with the high profile let downs of Guilty Crown, Aldnoah.Zero, and Darling in the FranXX, the 2010s were the decade where people more or less accepted that mecha was officially dead and buried and by now the studios have more or less stopped trying.
They really aren't
They really are. Dying indicates a genre that is on its way out, but that a scattered few seem to have some hope of maybe reviving it, usually only to fail. A dying genre or format is usually characterized by someone thinking that the problem is just no good shows to scratch the demand from the audience. A dead genre recognizes that the audience is no longer there. OVAs, for example, were dying across the 90s and the early 00s, having been crippled by the bubble economy popping. Even though they were still putting out the odd hit, the format at large was showing steady decline in quality and quantity of more ambitious entries. By even the late 00s, the format had (for all intents and purposes) drawn its last breath.

This implies that if I were to go back and watch more of the same shows from the same time period that I thought was great, that I wouldn’t like them
Nah, that's not really how that works.
You would need to watch those showsfor the first time nowto actually get an unbiased test of that.I think I misread that statement.Anime has changed of course, as all things do, but I don't think that change is comparable to the change a person has from when they are 15 years old to when they are 30 (at least over a similar timespan).
1
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
Eh.
I mean what’s the difference between a genre and the general style? If someone says they prefer the 90s style (as typically stylized as “90s anime art was peak, modern stuff looks like shit”) how is that too different from saying “the Big 3 were so peak, modern stuff is written like shit”?
I actually don’t think people’s tastes change all that drastically. When surveyed, most people think that [insert literally anything] peaked in whatever time period corresponds to their early teen years. Other studies have found (looking at music specifically) that your taste starts to form in your early-mid teens and by 30 you’ve more or less stopped seeking out new experiences (nostalgia being the big reason as to why). This is often cited as to why “pop music sucks now” is such a common sentiment. It doesn’t necessarily actually suck, it’s just different from what you subconsciously view as “good”.
So it’s not unreasonable to say that a similar thing happens in anime too.
3
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 1d ago
That's actually my point, but I don't blame that phenomenon entirely on the "thing" (in this case anime) changing.
People's taste doesn't really change a ton after a certain point, but they change greatly as people, especially when going through that period from teenager to adult. For example (I'll use video games cause I haven't been watching anime that long), I can say that I have a harder time finding games that really "hit" for me nowadays than 10-15 years ago. Games are different now, but how can I really compare these 2 different periods in my life when I have so much else to care/worry about now as an adult than when I was a teenager? Not to mention the fact that I have, at most, an hour a day to play games and when I was a teenager I could often play for like 3-5.
So while everyone's situations will be different, I tend to think that the change in a person is going to have a larger impact on this sort of thing than a change in the "thing" (at least over the same time period).

Dropped Sparks of Tomorrow unfortunately. It's just Towa no Yuugure but with better visuals.

u/thehaxorman https://anilist.co/user/detritus 1d ago
If I forced myself to watch Sparks all the way through like I did Yuugure I could definitely see myself hating it just as much. Two episodes was enough for me though.

Idk how you can come to the conclusion these shows are similar in any way.

u/flamethrower2 21h ago
I had to ask AI "What was wrong with Towa no Yuugure" because I only watched Episode 1. I liked that episode.
I have to watch a "hard left turn" show one of these days, like Wonder Egg Priority. Well-known train wrecks you can identify from Episode 1, like Ex-Arm. But then again, not always, like Uzumaki.

It's still at the bottom of the 13 shows I'm watching but today's episode was pretty good. I'll raise my 1/10 to a 6/10 I guess. I think it'll probably land around a 7 for me by the end of the season now that I'm settled into it a bit more and my expectations for what it is are more properly aligned.
The visuals are top tier.

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
Tbh I kinda agree with that one guy getting ragged on for saying newer shows don’t hit quite as well, even if his examples and argument are kinda bad.
Is this just an opinion? Yeah. Of course. No shit.
HOWEVER, I have numbers because I’m built like that.
Now I don’t think the overall quality of anime has dropped by a statistically significant amount, but there’s an important note to be made there. Looking over my list of the 50 Best Anime of the 2010s, 38 entries were populated by TV anime, while on the current 50 of the Last 10 Years that number has dropped to a mere plurality at 24, with trends suggesting that that number will continue to fall over the next couple years. This has been counterbalanced by a rise in atypical formats like ONAs or the resurgence of anime films, but with the next numbers not really budging, it would indicate that to counterbalance this TV has started to dip in terms of overall consistency.
You can certainly disagree, that’s just my take.

Ehhhh even being more picky with the stuff that I watch, I think I ended up with more 9/10s and 10/10s for stuff made in the last decade than before then? Like within my 10/10s, for older than last decade I have LoGH, Clannad, and Ping Pong the Animation, while within the last decade I have Kaguya-sama seasons 2 and 3, AoT seasons 2-4, March Comes in like a Lion, 86, and Apothecary Diaries S2.
Granted, 3-5 isn't that much of a discrepancy, especially since I've probably watched more anime made in the last decade than before... but eh, I don't find so much of a quality gap as some others do.
Edit: somehow forgot to add AoT oops.
1
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
I mean personally I haven’t given a 10 out in 5 years at this point (release year wise), which is the largest gap between 10s (and growing) since the 90s. You’d have to go back to the span between Akira and Princess Mononoke to find my last drought this bad.

Eh, I don't really feel the differences between decades are that significant, it really just depends on what your bias is. Frankly it's too soon but if the 2020s can have a few more solid years, to end the decade, I am taking it over the 2010s, even if the 80s/2000s are my favorite decades.
Everyone can get more cynical with a medium, or feel the quality is dropping but yeah his argument isn't very good. It's easy to compare highlights to the current season or year (and this one has been pretty exceptional in my opinion). For me, I almost always just compare highlights to highlights, as I do not feel the need to watch every show in a year lol. Still I have encountered bad anime, and I have encountered them from every decade.
Frankly it's just simple to say, I don't find anything appealing anymore, and leave it at that. No one can dispute that feeling. I just don't like fans who are like hey let's take this classic and compare it to this glut seasonal...If you are going to attack a decade, then at least explain why the actually critically acclaimed stuff isn't vibing for you, rather than just listing out great shows, and saying oh they don't make them like anymore.
1
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
For me, I almost always just compare highlights to highlights, as I do not feel the need to watch every show in a year lol
Tbf my read is that this was what that OP was doing. His scale was janky, which is usually the issue, but it seemed like he was comparing the best to the best (which is likewise what I prefer to do).
4
u/North514 1d ago
The issue is that he wasn't specific. If you are going to say hey 2010-2016 is better than 2020-2026, and this is why x best shows and x average shows are better than current best/average shows, then you know what fair, even if I disagree.
The problem I have with era comparisons they aren't specific, or they aren't fair, not that I disagree with them. Compare by a specific fair period of time, compare by genre/demographic, and also ensure that your comparisons are critically on the same level, and then yeah I am going to take that more seriously because it's actually fair.

u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
Since I am a man who appreciates the fine arts though, I will add to my previous statement that Bleach does completely mog every other Shounen sub maybe JJK when it comes to overall quality of its OPs. The original run of Naruto OPs is laughably terrible after the first one, One Piece doesn't put out a real contender until almost 25 years after it started and they were able to convince Ishitani to put out.
Bleach's very first opening is a contender for one of the greatest of all-time and it fills it out with a strong follow-up whose worst option (OP 3) is about on-par with the best that its competition was outputting. EDs is a little weaker, as is with most Shounen, but punctuated it with "Mask" still standing as one of the all-time best EDs of any anime, even 14 years later.
I think the only run I've seen that's so absolutely dominant among Shounen titles is the reaming that JJK and CSM have been doing to my end-of-year ED lists, and even when that's done it won't get anywhere close to the sheer quantity that Bleach landed.
2
u/Charmanders_Cock 21h ago
Bleach OP 6 is forever stuck in my head and it’s debatable whether it’s even a top 5 for the series. The opening shot with Kon singing is sort of classic in its own right. Whoever called the shots on the music for the series was a homie though. Also going to add that I was joking earlier if it wasn’t obvious. I have a lot of love for shonen OP’s across the board but no series have ever stood out to me for consistency like Bleach.

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 22h ago
The original run of Naruto OPs were pretty good tbh, especially #2, #3, and #4

Nah. Songs maybe, but the visuals are genuinely horrendous beyond the very first one.

Of all the long-running Shounen, Fairy Tail of all things might just have the best run of OP and ED songs.
Sorry, not sorry.

This is really just a music taste thing, but that said if your answer isn’t bleach for this you might have shit taste in music.
2
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 1d ago
Does Gintama count here? Because that would be a tough choice with Bleach.
2
u/Charmanders_Cock 1d ago
True, I don’t really look at Gintama as being a battle shonen (even if it sort of is). But if we’re just talking long running series I’d say you have the best taste in music here so far.
1
u/Salty145 https://anilist.co/user/yLSalty145 1d ago
It's a close race, and I'll accept either answer. If I just considered OPs I think Bleach takes it, but its EDs range way too drastically for it to take the total package.
1
u/Charmanders_Cock 1d ago
Fair enough I hadn’t really out too much stock in ED’s when making this point and don’t remember enough of Fairy Tail’s to really say they’re bad tbh. I do remember that Bleach clears for OP songs though.
0
u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago
100% agreed, followed by Black Clover, Naruto, Bleach, and then One Piece.
Fairy Tail openings 1 and 3 are all time classics.

I might move Bleach up to #2, but besides that yeah I’d agree

I just finished watching Kaguya-sama after brushing it off for quite a while. I never caved in to spoilers and trailers so everything I watched was new from S1. It was phenomenal, but I never expected it to be that good compared to other anime I watched. After finishing the last episode of an anime you always get an empty feeling inside of you, but this time I felt like nothing I will ever watch will top it. After every single anime I watched I could pin point a flaw that stopped me from calling it phenomenal, but today I couldn't complain about a single thing.
Thanks for reading my rant.
1
u/Ok-Cod5254 1h ago
Yeah, by far my favorite rom com because it was great for the sum of its part - great comedy with a colorful cast of characters, romance with legitimate pay off, great platonic relationships, and many characters actually get some development and aren't just gags.
6
u/Gruntagen 1d ago
I've been in such a mood rut that I've started rewatching Xabungle.
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago
Definitely one of the anime of all time.
1
u/Gruntagen 1d ago
Have you actually watched it?
1
u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago
I have!
I think it's a nice little show. Maybe not my favorite Yoshiyuki Tomino anime but I really liked the idea they were pitching in the end with the [mild spoiler]class warfare
I think it's a bit of a messy series conceptually with [spoiler]Jiron sidelining the Xabungle like halfway through the series or his awkward relationship with the green haired girl, or his longstanding beef with Timp
Fantastic opening song though, and it's one of the more fun Tomino anime to watch while still preserving what makes his anime unique. I'll probably rewatch it myself some day but I still have yet to see Dunbine and some of the other Tomino one-off anime.

First episode impressions, (part 1, part 2) part 3:
Kaiju Girl Caramelise — Yes I would still love her if she was Godzilla. Immediately endearing, looking forward to more.
The Ogre's Bride — The family seems cartoonishly abusive toward her but I don't doubt some people have to deal with that in real life. Prologue done but dunno much about the male lead yet so will have to see where it goes from there, while it does seem like it's leaning more toward the drama side it could be another "abused girl whisked away to a life of happiness" kind of series. I generally don't vibe with "human girl enters world of yokai" series but so far this seems like it won't have much of a hidden world aspect.
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You — Opening scene made me think Kowloon Generic Romance, not a bad thing. Don't really like the idea of smoking as a central theme but not going to let that get in my way so far, I like the dynamic they have.
Red River — Now I regret not watching Fushigi Yuugi last year. Love the Dezaki-style shots, the music has my attention, the setting's interesting too [though] I only know of Hattusa from the Civilization games. The OP at the end has me pumped for more, reminds me of The Twelve Kingdoms and Yona.
Victoria of Many Faces — This is nice. Not tagged as romance but still has potential for at least some mutual interest there.
Grow Up Show: Sunflower Circus — CGDCircusT? Eh, still has my interest as an original series and I like Rie Kugimiya's role here along with the dark-haired girl doing dark-haired girl things (though not quite living up to the likes of Reina and Hikari).

Ogre's Bride - how similar is it to My Happy Marriage?
6
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 1d ago
Ogre's Bride is more of a daytime soap opera, while My Happy Marriage is more prestige TV.
2
u/SMSmith230 https://myanimelist.net/profile/smsmith230 1d ago
daytime soap opera
Sometimes I need a little drama in my life and this is scratching my itch for that reason.
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 1d ago
It follows a Cinderella-type story like My Happy Marriage. But I found the writing to be much less coherent in this aspect. The character is writing much worse than in My Happy Marriage.
2
u/mekerpan 1d ago
I thought the writing in Happy Marriage -- both plot and character -- was consistently disappointing. I haven't made up my mind with Ogres Bride yet. But I like Hayamin's performance of her character more than I liked her Happy Marriage counterpart.
1
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 1d ago
Well, more so comparing it early on. Like the reasons for Miyo to be as emotionally abused were aggravating, at least they made sense and were coherent. It made sense why Kaya was favored, why the stepmother hated Miyo and why the father lost interest in her.
While in Ogre's Bride, I just find why Karin being favored so much over Yuzu makes no sense. Unless at birth they knew she would be a bride. But that is a giant assumption.
Also, how the series treats human males is kind of, well, they are screwed, huh? Well, if you treat the series as a pure wish fulfillment, you are bound to enjoy it, like how we have numerous wish-fulfillment anime for males.
Sadly, with how we aren't allowed to talk about Donguha I can't mention Colored Pencil Animation which has made some great works like Fated Princess. Ogre's Bride is made by their Japanese studio Colored Pencil Animation Japan. Very good work that I plan to check out in their other future work. I just made my peace with Ogre's Bride that it would be better for me to drop it.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
2
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
Hard to say from one episode though it's a modern setting and Yuzu (female lead) is a lot less passive than Miyo was at the start. The demon clans are functionally similar to the families with powers in My Happy Marriage for how they affect the sociopolitical landscape though Yuzu doesn't have any abilities herself.
3
u/mekerpan 1d ago
Red River initially looked promising, but the characters and overall writing drove me away. It can't survive in a head to head with Jaadugar. ;-)
2
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
I haven't started Jaadugar yet but I expect it to be a different kind of series and not warrant any direct comparisons; Red River's very much in the classic isekai of the '90s realm for me as a first impression.
3
u/mekerpan 1d ago
MAO is perhaps a closer comparison (quasi-isekai at least). I really enjoy MAO -- retro style and tone and all But Red River fell unexpectedly flat for me.

I'm gauging interest for a Monogatari series rewatch. Check out the thread if you are interested :)

Highly recommend anyone that's on the fence to watch this. Bakemonogatari alone is one of the greatest anime ever made and you still have like 5 fantastic seasons after that.
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago
Fun anecdote (fun to me anyway) is that I only ever watched 1 thing from this series, but I watched it (well, mostly listened to it) probably 500 times.
(And NO, it's not the one you'll first think about!)
But yeah, it's always been on my radar, but the 5 million episodes (and a 2-3 episodes a day rewatch) is killing it for me.

Hey, at least it seems like Code Geass did one thing right. You're finally on the right path: don't waste another second of your life on recommendations unless it's from someone whose tastes you can ascertain, or better yet, respect.
I have Eva to thank for closing that door of random recommendations.
3
u/mekerpan 1d ago
Recs can open a door. But I feel no compunction on closing it promptly again if something grates ,(and promises little ultimate reward, other than ticking off a supposed must-see).
4
u/wloff 1d ago
Nah, hard disagree. Try everything. It's not "wasting your life", it's an experience that's going to teach you something. Even if that something is just "okay, I don't like stuff like this".
But yeah, maybe bail out before you're in for 50 episodes of something you hate.

6
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago
Sure, but to any journey, there is a path, guideposts that take you to the next stop, and then to the one after it. I'm not saying that one should abandon the curiosity in what lays outside, but rather that they should follow their own curiosity down whatever obscure rabbit holes and mazes it might lead, instead of some curated list of "masterpieces". Picking a show for yourself that ends up being bad is an experience that doesn't carry that weight of expectation the way a recommended masterpiece does.
9
u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago
Code Geass has a lot of flaws but at no point would I consider it "boring".

Then they drop the name of the villain of the week - Rudolf Symboli. What a pretty minor detail about his 'hobbies' but funny that they would deliver on the references.
