That moment when Yuki is repeatedly striking Essei and then the beach houses are on fire. And then Yuki is crying at the bar.

Seeing the same highway at the end of the movie that is present in the anime's OP feels oddly nostalgic.

The hour and a half flew by! Music and visuals are great as always.

I just finished marathoning this yesterday and enjoyed the heck out if it. It's a pretty unique experience and I'm glad there's a new episode to watch before me diving to the light novels.

I think experience is the key word ,as seems voyeuristic, not because of scantily dressed characters but, you seem to be watching from afar, I get the dislike. I liked it as was different , the pace, the long pauses , the repetition of words etc.

Anime normally works as just cut to pure essence, no extraneous stuff in normal TV dramas, like poor set, or that actor is crap, are they going to eat the food ?, or was he that movie etc

This makes it all fuzzy , spaced out - so is different , yet still an underlying story

when i went to Disney World as a foreigner in 1988, I purposely at age 22 went in with child mindset , i will do every ride , teacups, small world , space mountain etc. yeah easy to go as cynic , same for this , just go with the flow, would be easy to say pretentious crap , artistic masturbation etc . I willing to try most things , currently watching a romcoms , or straight romance slice of life animes , surprised how much i liked them.

I get someone at a different stage of life , watching say episode 12, they are just standing there, nothing is FN happening , switch to std anime

Yuki wasn’t as calm or collected in this round at first. She couldn’t even tell if she really was the killer or not. I guess Essei’s fake death in that mutilated manner really fucked with her head. That, or it was the toll of playing like 40 odd death games. Finding out your dead mentor isn’t dead probably doesn’t help either.

8

u/RelativeMundane9045 8d ago

Yeah, I didn't really get Yuki's blackouts. If it's meant to just express psychological trauma I'm not sure it was conveyed very well.

It's also possible we're not meant to know what's going on with that yet, or it may have just been too high concept for my smooth dry brain.

11

u/Several-Length1242 8d ago

I wouldn't think too hard about it. This director has a very strong sense of artistic impression.

4

u/ashes2asscheeks 7d ago

I think it’s DR/DP or some kind of dissociation plus lingering effects of the drugs for sedation and body mods probably

Anyone else felt Essei played this way too stupidly as a 50-game veteran? It's one thing if deaths counted towards her 3-kill objective, but the fact she has to be the one to kill them makes it so her strat is terrible.

Everyone was under the impression it was just an escape/survival game during the first night. There's your easy first kill. Definitely use the shock device on Yuuki or another veteran.

Second night, a little harder, but should still be possible. Hindsight 20/20, but people were still alone.

Third night, you probably have to brute force at this point, but it's definitely less risky than what your actual strategy was...which is to entirely cripple yourself then act as a silent killer...which offers no benefits out of just killing people normally. More than likely what would've happened is they just start pairing off, or you get your 3rd kill while standing watch. She's a 50-game veteran so I'm assuming she has some combat expertise.

Now if the game was just deaths, then sure, 1000 iq strategy. But imagine this goes another way and they start killing each other instead. None of those deaths counts towards your kills and it just gets harder and harder.

11

u/Tyroil6 8d ago

I agree that Essei's decisions didn't make sense. I was more focused on other aspects of the movie (mostly the direction), so it didn't bother me that much. Writing isn't Shiboyugi's strong point in my opinion.

u/drt0 8d ago

Maybe that's why during the fight scene between Yuuki and Essai it is revealed that Hakushi thinks Essai is a "genious in a bad way" and has high hopes for Yuuki (implying she favors Yuuki's chances over Essai).

9

u/Jellionani 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think Essei is a product of mechanic abuse. She thought she found the secret sauce to win in that specific scenario, but as Hakushi pointed out, she's a genius without forethought. Who knows how much games Hakushi won with her secret technique, even Hakushi knew her time was up after Candle Woods and quit even if the 100th game was there. For me, it's a last ditch hail marry for survival, not something to keep using.

The difference between Essei and Yuki is the latter is willing to keep winning the games with as little body modifications as possible. To her, the body is one with an overall advantage, and willingly giving it up is a fool's errand to an early grave. On a death game where body modifications can easily win the game this is a disadvantage. Meanwhile, Essei is a genius that got fixated on Hakushi's last game, and finding out the secret technique. It's a mean way to win, but it's still an incredibly risky way to win. Yuki wins by being a generalist build, with a social kit that doesn't get under people's nerves. This is compared to Magumi, who trusts only her own body and skills to survive, hence instantly knowing the Cloudy Beach gimmick.

I think to Essei, it was a state of pride to use Hakushi's secret, and one against Yuki, Hakushi's other surviving protégé. Yuki saw Hakushi's corpse, and was the only "one" to survive the Candle Woods incident, and that weighs heavily on her that it blinded her judgement during Candle Woods Cloudy Beach.

I assume that Essei trusts that these veterans, few of which she's played with, have enough experience to not just start killing each other, while nobody trusts each other to pair up overnight(Except Airi-Yuki). With Magumi off to the forest on her own relying on her survival skills, nobody else has the overwhelming physical strength to quietly kill a veteran. At the same time, the rule of the game is only known to Essei. Kill one person per night, up to 3. Nobody else knows if it's one of the players, or a third party, or something else.

u/towardselysium 8d ago

I just love the targeting order. She chooses Herself, I guess to have an easier time, the student of the sin of pride, and the student of a serial killer. Instead of the rookie 10 game girl who's afraid of the wind, the girl whose dipping her toes back in, or the 6ft tall military goddess who can probably flex away bullets.

Personally I find the fact that she couldn't hit a single person with an automatic rifle when their standing in a tight group to be the bigger fail

2

u/Big-Duck 4d ago

Yeah that scene with her in the cave was like, either someone lied to her about the downsides of this thing big time or she is straight up throwing. Stealing the gun from the ship did seem like a pretty clever move, I guess maybe she just expected to recover faster. She did look much healthier by that time compared to the cave, so there's clearly some regeneration aspect.

I also found it funny that after faking her death, aside from putting herself back together, she also cleaned up all the "fluff" scattered around the room.

On a positive note, the girl faking her death in the shower to avoid the killer was a slick move.

1

u/BosuW 8d ago

Well, Yuuki did say she didn't look like combat was her specialty.

1

u/Christopho https://myanimelist.net/profile/furrytoes 8d ago

In the sense of hand-to-hand, etc. This is just a logic problem though. Logically, she should be able to come to the conclusion that this was a terrible plan.

At the end of the day, from a meta perspective, it really was just about shock factor, a student copying her mentor's methods, and to obviously reveal that Yuuki's mentor isn't the only one capable of seemingly revive from the dead.

u/Training_Bother_1663 8d ago

I know that this film will have divided opinions, so that people who only watched the anime and will love it, but for light novel readers it will be a disappointment.

Personally, I liked it and I really like some original scene from director Souta Ueno and the truth is that seeing the mental state of Yuki was incredible, I also liked the relationship between Yuki and Airi, I was surprised by the psychopathic murderer behind the murders, to see finally a conversation between student and teacher was beautiful.

As soon as the technical animation department did an outstanding job, Studio Deen and the entire creative team of Souta Ueno, in what stood out the most would be the sound direction, the setting, music and the cinematographic direction, and the performance of the seiyuus was a sublime work.

My overall score is 9/10.

18

u/drt0 8d ago

I love the artistry the show and now this movie displays. I hope they adapt more of this story, or at least continue creating unique media.

15

u/Training_Bother_1663 8d ago

Right now, Studio Deen and Souta Ueno are working on a new project with Aniplex called Dengeki Daisy, which will be released in 2027, and without a doubt, the little that has been demonstrated with a teaser trailer will be a quality project, but at the same time, a very problematic anime, but I will also be there to see their work.

5

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 6d ago

He is doing Dengeki Daisy? colour me surprised.

Maybe I should check it, it is a classic

3

u/Training_Bother_1663 6d ago

It is a classic and very good shoujo, only if you ignore the age difference, you will see that it is a masterpiece of a classic that will soon arrive next year with its anime and I know that Souta Ueno will do a good job touching on a very delicate theme.

11

u/BosuW 8d ago

The way this anime uses cinematographic language to make you experience the life of each character is easily my favorite part of watching it.

4

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

As an anime only, what I really liked and I assume might have a point later on is that they subtly ignored a big mystery: Who killed the third victim? Essay mentions she wasn't able to kill anyone. So who did? Combine that with the fact that Airi claimed that she would have seen if someone entered Mitsuba's hut, but seemingly didn't see Essay going in, the only conclusion is that Airi is the killer.

And the reasoning was probably to help Yuki. She might not have believed that it was her, but proving it is a different beast altogether. Yuki didn't believe her lie after all (I assume she didn't observe the whole night instead of seeing some hooded figure and lying about that part), so the only option is for her to stay with Airi the whole night. And while Yuki sleeps, Airi kills another person to help Yuki believe she is not the killer.

It also tracks with the fact that the victim is the same person that almost killed Airi during the day. So she might not have big issues with doing it.

The only thing that doesn't seem to fit well is that seemingly the muscular girl never reappeared either. Did she just hide the whole time or did she do something else as well?

7

u/mrsomeawe 6d ago edited 6d ago

On day three of Essei's pov, Essei is shown standing in front of someone who fell in the spike pit. This is probably how the yellow-eyed girl Hizumi died

Not sure why Essei bothered to move the corpse back into the house, or how Yuki survived it straight after, but instincts diff I guess.

1

u/Big-Duck 4d ago

The only thing that doesn't seem to fit well is that seemingly the muscular girl never reappeared either. Did she just hide the whole time or did she do something else as well?

She really did just peace out and just never showed up again lol

Eh aight, all's fair.

u/Hokaze-Junko 3d ago

The movie feels like a revisit of EP5 where we first experienced Yuuki's perspective as her sense of reality began to blur and the her world became surreal. But this time, it's after everything that went down in the anime, with characters like Mishiro, Kyara, and Hakushi still weighing heavily on her

The best part is definitely getting to experience Yuuki's perspective again. Being lost, confused, doubting herself, and isn't even sure whether she has actually gone insane. Just like Yuuki, I was constantly confused and unsure of what to believe, which made the whole experience really thrilling as an anime-only watcher

And yeah, really looking forward to Dengeki Daisy, excited to see Souta Ueno deliver a whole new kind of experience, especially within the shoujo genre

It's good to see Yuki again, she looked great in that bikini! I'm glad that even though it's a movie released in theaters in Japan, we didn't have to wait for God knows how long to watch it.

Although with all those murders, rainy weather and Souta Ueno's direction, it didn't feel like I was watching a beach episode :(

Yuki having a mental breakdown and thinking that she was the killer was a really interesting idea. I liked that Airi giving her a lap pillow was enough to bring her back to her usual self lol.

I also liked that Yuki discovered that Hakushi is alive after Koyomi told her in a casual conversation that she had gone out with her for a drink recently.

Here my screenshot albums from this episode/movie:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Like the show, the movie's unique direction is the main reason why I like it. You can tell the people creating the show are trying to express something. They aren't phoning it in or just trying to make money. I feel myself drawn to works like this, regardless of other qualities. Anyone else agree?

Movie specific thoughts:
A lot of this movie is highlighting Yuuki's trauma from her past killings. Mitsuba confronts her about Mishiro. The state of the bodies reminds her of Kyara. Airi helps her overcome the trauma, but then the game ends with Yuuki killing her fellow student, Essei. It felt like Airi's temporary reassurance was wiped away by another killing. Yuuki also finds out her role model, Hakushi, is still alive and decided to retire before completing 99 games. What is Yuuki's motivation now? She seems tortured by the killing she has to do, and she no longer has to "avenge" her teacher.
I think her real motivation for playing the games was never tied to completing 99 games on Hakushi's behalf. She is only playing because she has no sense of self outside the games. If this is the case (I could be wrong), I think the writing is a bit underdeveloped. I want to feel her emptiness more. I want to see how boring or purposeless her outside life is. I need a little more context to feel connection with her character. Thoughts?

24

u/towardselysium 8d ago

It demands that you think, the silence takes your attention, and its genuinely emotionally compelling. It's not for everyone sure but for what its trying to do it nails it.

Yuki's goal is to complete 99 games and prove herself the best, but the why is still a lingering question. Her primary fear in this game is that the why is because she's like Kyara and enjoys killing which is a valid fear very unhelpful by the fact that there is yet another terminator in this show. The ending is excessive and brutal in a way that highlights how afraid Yuki is but at the same time if someone can be A Okay missing half their organs what else can you do other than literally dice them into pieces.

13

u/drt0 8d ago

I agree with everything else, and regarding Yuuki's motivation, I feel like in the first season they showed how empty her life was outside of the games - she was even more ghostly when she was back home. Maybe they should explore her life before the games.

I think you hit the nail on the head that she now has to confront her real motivation to continue the games, because revenge was already looking like a flimsy excuse. When Kyara's ghost confronted her in the movie, Yuuki was barely able to raise objections and seemed shocked when Kyara told her the feeling she has when living in this deranged world is called love.

5

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

I did comment on that during episode 11. I think the whole point of these episodes was that Yuki remembered Candlewoods after her 30th game (which is why characters appear that were part of later games). During this, it is already shown that her motivation goes beyond just reaching the 99 game half of fame. She is "remembering" all the girls of the games. A big part of the story is that these girls have no real personality. Just fake names that are quickly forgotten afterwards. And Yuki wants to make sure that at least she remembers them when no one else does. Which is why she has this ritual of saying the name of every fallen girl after finishing.

There is also a second part in that episode. She gets a school uniform and goes outside again. She is able to do that now. And therefore, she could go back to a normal life. But she decided to follow her motivation of helping all these other girls in similar situations like her (not being able to live a normal life, either because of money or just that they are shunned by society due to their character). Even if it is just remembering them and their personalities.

This game now follows a bit the trauma of that decision with her having to come to terms that she also kills a lot of people during that. And of course, even if it is more of a facade, the fact that Hakushi survived is putting a damper on her saying she is trying to get to 99 games for her sake. She basically can't rationalize this anymore for herself and now has to go deeper into her alternative motivation. Which is why she didn't need much time afterwards to think. When she heard 85 people died in a different game, she knew she would continue because now there are 85 girls that won't be remembered at all.

4

u/BosuW 8d ago

I thought this was already clearly communicated since the season already tbh. Not in explicit words but it doesn't need to because it's in absolutely everything else. The whole cinematographic language is defined by Yuuki's sense of disconnect and emptiness.

24

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek 9d ago edited 9d ago

Airi looks stunning in this movie. I totally didn't recognize her from the previous game.

Also, I'm glad Yuuki found out about Hakushi. I like it when loose threads are resolved.

3

u/BosuW 8d ago

Have we met Airi from a previous game? I was wondering about that but couldn't think of a case.

17

u/Manicnow 8d ago

She was a Stump in Candle Woods.

3

u/BosuW 8d ago

I see, thanks!

6

u/ResearcherPretty4139 7d ago edited 7d ago

Candle Woods had 3 Survivors:

Yuki, Airi, and Hakushi (Yuki had thought it was only 2 Survivors her and Airi until the end of this episode, which was why Yuki both struggled with combating Essei another Hakushi-disciple at the end and also why Yuki trusted Airi even to the point of sleeping in her lap without even considering being murdered whilst asleep during a Death Game)

Even though Yuki and Airi were on separate teams for Candle Woods by the time they actually met up in the game enough people had already died to where both of them would be allowed to 'win', she trusted Airi more than Essei a fellow disciple. Also, Mitsuba (the disciple of Mishiro) also trusted Yuki more than Essei since Yuki was the one who ended Mitsuba's mentor, not the 'fake' disciple Essei. So Mitsuba wouldn't give Essei the satisfaction of killing her and committed suicide instead to rob Essei of the 'win'.

Also why the after-credits phone call to Yuki was so significant (a 2nd Candle Woods happening with only 3 survivors during the Cloudy Beach game!?!? Pretty coincidental!)

6

u/YumeKioku 6d ago

That phone call is the prologue of Yuki's very next game (45th game)

2

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 3d ago

> Also why the after-credits phone call to Yuki was so significant (a 2nd Candle Woods happening with only 3 survivors during the Cloudy Beach game!?!? Pretty coincidental!)

Could you pls elaborate on that? What’s the supposed implied connection between the 2nd candlewood game and cloudy beach?

It was a coincidence because there were 3 survivors in Candle Woods and also 3 survivors in this other game that happened during the Cloudy Beach game.

lol that's it, I'm sorry if I implied there was more to it than that, I don't know anything that happens next it wasn't supposed to sound cryptic or conspiratorial. Just an observation I made at the end of this film.

It's basically a teaser for the next chapters of the source to be adapted to anime, a cliffhanger for Yuki. Will she be able to complete 99 games with potentially another mass murderer on the loose in the Death Games?

10

u/Wokco30 8d ago

Bro's aim was awful

3

u/BosuW 8d ago edited 8d ago

I'm betting they just gave her the "joined the insurgency today AK" course: this is the part that spits lead so try not to put your face in front, here's the fire selector/safety, push it all the way down, now you killing, push it all the way up, now you ain't, put it in the middle, now you're fully fun, push the paddle to release the magazine, to insert a new one you have to rotate it back a bit, then you pull and release the charging handle; okay Boss she's good to go, SEND IT!

3

u/ResearcherPretty4139 7d ago

Yuki pre-spoiled the fact that Essei was a "thinker, not a fighter" way before they even figured out Essei was the culprit. Also, Essei was severely diminished physically from her self-mutilation to the point where she had to rest up on Days 4-7 to even be able to put up a last minute fight when the rescue boats arrived after the week was over.

That's the reason why Hakushi told Yuki that she might have what it takes to make it to 99, and didn't tell that to Essei who only knew how to copy Hakushi and not think for herself. In retrospect, it was a dumb idea to try to copy Hakushi when Hakushi only made it to 95 before retiring, Essei should've teamed up with Yuki to win Cloudy Beach but she over-strategized and defeated herself.

10

u/BosuW 8d ago edited 8d ago

They gotta release this internationally bro. In IMAX. I'll watch it three times.

🖐️😑🤚

Also huffing mad hopium that Sota Ueno sees this one through to the end because I am NOT ready to let it go I need more!

Okay so, the movie. I think the narrative this time was about the continuation of Yuuki's resolve to be present and care, and thus we saw her emotions actually arriving this time around. It was pain. Schizophrenia!Kyara said she's human because she hurts. Are we thinking Yuuki self-harmed in her cabin and that's how/when she found the device?

Yuuki also spilled tears at the end. Season Yuuki would never! I'm telling you, she's on that Violet Evergarden Arc (except the killing shall continue until morale improves for this case). Although to go up she had to reach rock bottom first. That's why she starts with the whole walking/killing thing. Her life in the the games and her life outside mixed so much she couldn't tell one from the other. Honestly has me wondering if she killed a bystander outside from sheer inertia and hence the (further) trauma.

Interesting direction that in connecting with her emotions she actually internalized Kyara somewhat (very happy to see Moegi again btw, even if she didn't speak, I love her). I don't think she's gonna go on a rampage (um, not yet at least?), but hey, it's a death game, you will kill people. May as well "enjoy" it in moderation, right? It's a deranged world yo, let a girl have hobbies.

Airi had me suspecting she was the sussus amogus when she mentioned the stars burning. Kyara and Moegi's narrative had that thematic all around (and literally in Moegi's name). Incidentally might be a nice connection there with Essei burning too in the end. But anyway, Airi, I'm sorry for doubting you. She spent whole night with Yuuki just to reassure her she's not the amogus (new ship?). She's great.

But honestly the best player was Maguma low-key. As soon as she realized the team was gonna work out she just fucked off to the jungle to wait the game out. I respect the strat.

Poor Essei just wasn't the chosen daughter. Tried to follow a living corpse ended up a real one. In your case, you really should have seen where your path was going girl. Oh I guess this shoots down my theories from the season that Hakushi was gonna be the Final Boss. Unless she plays again. Or she becomes a GM. Hmm, actually, let's still keep that one tabbed.

And because a firearm showed up I just have to leave a comment for it. Even though it changed dimensions like it was made of playdough (I get it Deen, guns are hard to draw), it's interesting that the magazine generally looked straighter than the typical image of a Kalashnikov conjures. I suspect that's not a mistake, but that they used a model chambered in the modern AK cartridge, 5.45x39mm, instead of the old 7.62x39mm. Doesn't matter much, except maybe it's easier to shoot because lower recoil and flatter trajectory. Just, again, had to notice lol.

Kidna weird seeing Yuuki so vulnerable in this.

What was with the after credits scene? Can't tease us like that and not give more anime!

6

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 6d ago

It was a game without Yuki so they would not show it but sometimes we learn details from other games. I like how in the end they are a big family.

4

u/manquistador 6d ago

Really? I feel like that is the default Yuki state at this point. I would like to see her be more competent for a change.

21

u/KumaKumaGambler 9d ago

Both Yuki and Essay look up to Hakushi greatly, don't they? Both of them wanted to continue their master's dream of clearing 99 games.

Personally, I think Hakushi had it the hardest. I don't think she favored either of her proteges more than the other, but because of Cloudy Beach, she knew either Yuki or Essay would be killed.

P.S. #1: It is nice to see Airi again and she has become more confident.
P.S #2: I probably need to rewatch the episode again. What happened to Maguma?

4

u/BosuW 8d ago

Hakushi really felt like a mother had to stand and watch two of her daughters squabble over her empire this movie.

4

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

Third mystery: Who killed the third victim? It seemingly wasn't Essay. So my bet is on Airi as a means to help Yuki. And she did have a score to settle with that girl from the day as well.

Essei killed her. The way the bodies are staged on the first 3 nights (Essei's, Mitsuba's and the 3rd victim) were all done by Essei, so we can assume it was Essei who did the 3rd killing (even if the 1st 2 "kills" were staged Essei definitely mutilated the bodies).

With the 3rd victim we get the impression that they did not trust anybody who played in Candle Woods, so she didn't listen to Airi (winner of Candle Woods) trying to explain about the microchip embedded in her wrist. The chip was all Essei would've needed to kill her easily since it incapacitates someone when activated.

4

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago edited 7d ago

But everyone saw how the bodies were staged, so it's not like it has to be the same killer. Furthermore, Airi was even part of Candlewoods, so she has seen the "original" and might even hold a grudge towards Kyara's students adding to the feud. And again, she clearly lied about having seen no one go into the hut at night. I am not sure what the point about them distrusting Airi for being in Candlewoods is about. I never said that her trying to kill Airi had anything to do other than her trying to defend herself. The point is, that from Airi's perspective, that makes her a "problem" even if she is not the killer. So eliminating her in order to get "real" Yuki back is rationally speaking positive for them. I am not saying that this is empathetic or anything but she played over 30 games as well, so that would not be a strange development on her part.

Now, as for Essay, there are two big things. Why would she say that she wasn't able to kill anyone when she did in fact have one kill already? That's my biggest problem here. There is no need to lie to the audience. And it also makes no sense. Why would Essay change her strategy towards entering the ship that is coming to get them on the 7th day to get a weapon and then kill the other two on a strict time limit? She still had 4 days left. If the issue is the removal of the chips, then how does she know? She clearly didn't know Mitsuba removed it. We are shown as much. And if the chip made it so she could kill the next person (after learning that they already know about it) why would she now assume that everyone else removed it? Her level of information just changes too much in this scenario. And that is not even asking what the point is of giving her a chip as well. Sure, she was to die if she didn't get it done, but it's not like she could have escaped anyway. And if she needs to remove it in order to actually "play" the game, then it's pointless to begin with.

For Airi on the other hand, there is a clear motive as well as opportunity to do it. She found out about the chip and even might have assumed that she could use it to her advantage during the night, so that she can easily kill this person in order to bring Yuki back.

Edit: Though, there is one more idea I have. Airi might not have killed her but staged her death. We have seen the girl in the pit and I didn't know who it was because she didn't look like the one that went missing (Maguma). And we also know that Essay found the same person in the pit on the third day. So what if, after their confrontation, the girl decided to go after Airi when she ran away, fell into the pit and died (which Airi then found). In order to prove to Yuki that she isn't the killer, she prepared the already dead body like she was killed at night. Only issue is that the clothes don't fit, but tbf, they don't fit anyone aside Yuki and we know she didn't fall into the pit.

3

u/ResearcherPretty4139 7d ago

iirc it's impossible for it to have been Airi because she was with Yuki the entire time. There was no opportunity/means (even if the motive was there). There is a case for pretty much anybody other than Airi and Yuki being the culprit though, if you are are hypothesizing that it's someone other than Essei.

Occam's Razor says it's Essei. I would even argue that Essei claims that she didn't 'earn' the kill on the 3rd victim because she had to rely on the microchip as a crutch, but it counts nonetheless. But yes, you could also say that either Mozuku (unlikely since it's her 10th game and she crumpled under pressure when Essei attacked them all at the beach) or Yozomi (again, unlikely since she's only played 20 games in like 3 years and is not someone who is proactive about winning Death Games) could be the one to do it.

If it wasn't any of those 4 it has to be Essei or Maguma, and I doubt Maguma would try to frame the 'Mutilation' m.o. of Essei when she's blatantly laid dangerous booby traps on the island instead. Again, Occam's Razor. There's no reason to suspect anybody else here other than motive/means/opportunity suspects like Essei.

4

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

There was no means? What about the time Yuki was sleeping? Just because she claimed they were together the whole night does not mean it was true. Yuki even says she only saw her sleep during a later moment which in my opinion is a pretty big hint towards that theory. The point is that Yuki feared she would kill Airi. Because so far, the kills had always been the ones where she wanted to go. So once Airi survived, it meant to her that she wasn't the killer.

Which makes Occam's Razor the exact opposite. In your scenario, Essay stages her death, then tries to kill Mitsuba which doesn't work, because she removed her chip. So Essay nearly dies. She then still goes for the hunt on the third night and luckily picks the ONE person who still had her chip installed. And after doing that, she now decides to switch tactics. Despite there being at least one easy target (the one with 10 games) and probably Maguma who split from the group and is therefore an easier target. So really not sure why you need to change strategies here.

To me, it is far more likely that Airi either killed the third person herself or found her in the pit without telling anyone. And once she learns that Yuki distrusts herself, she claims she stays with her the whole night and once Yuki falls asleep (helped by singing a literal lullaby) prepares another "victim" to ease her thoughts.

2

u/ResearcherPretty4139 6d ago

Airi did not have to do anything to ensure the 3rd victim was going to die, she knew that if the microchip wasn't taken out that the True Killer of the game would come for her. So all she had to do was stay by Yuki's side and guard her all night (which is what the episode actually showed). You still would have to make tons of assumptions to think that Airi sang a lullaby to Yuki specifically to lure her to sleep, then sneak out without being seen without any weapons and committed a copycat kill using Essei's m.o., when you don't have to make as many assumptions to believe that it was Essei who did it herself.

That's what I mean by Occam's Razor supports Essei being the culprit more than Airi. Now, you make a fair point that it's POSSIBLE that Airi framed Essei while Yuki was asleep but 2 reasons why this is less likely 1) if Airi stole a kill from the True Killer that is one more person that needs to die to make a total of 3 kills, meaning Airi just prolonged the game and encouraged Essei to kill somebody else (potentially herself or Yuki who she's trying to protect) and 2) Airi literally tried to save the 3rd victim's life and it's less likely for her to want to double back and kill that same person especially considering that Airi doesn't appear to be a bi-polar mass murderer in any of the Death Games we've seen her play.

I hope I'm being clear, it just seems like you're making too many assumptions to squeeze in Airi as a potential culprit when the episode doesn't really give much support for this to be the case. But again, it's entirely possible you're right!

2

u/ModieOfTheEast 6d ago edited 6d ago

I find it weird that you are claiming I am making too many assumptions when you haven't addressed any of the assumptions you have to make. Again, why would Essay go back and try to kill someone when she saw they removed their chips? It's a risk since she can't know Hizumi didn't take it out. Secondly, why did she stop going for kills after the ONLY time her kill worked? What is the logic here? Why change strategies the one time your plan worked? It makes no sense. It makes way more sense for Essay that she became afraid after having nearly died during night 2. Then, she saw that another person had died falling into a pit (probably Hizumi, but even if we say this was Magumo to make your point even possible, this won't change much), so she decided to change plans right then and there.

Also, I don't have to make many assumptions. You claim that we are shown that Airi stayed with Yuki the whole time. No, we are not. We see she was with her when she fell asleep and when she woke up. Again, they literally have Yuki say she never saw her sleep before. Also, again, the whole logic about Airi just having to wait for Essay to make a kill completely falls apart because I also mentioned that it is likely that the girl in the pit was in fact Hizumi. So Essay couldn't kill her. And all Airi had to do was to prepare her body. Because why would Essay prepare her herself?

Furthermore, Airi doesn't need to be a psychopath, she just needs to be rational. Which she would be after over 30 games. They all removed their chips, so it's unlikely for the killer to be able to even get to them at this point. Just preparing another corpse (that might have been dead before) to bring Yuki back is not a huge assumption to make.

So, no, I still don't agree with your "Occam's Razor" here. Especially because you claim that we saw Airi being together with Yuki the whole night. Which is false. While also ignoring Essay saying she didn't kill anyone. So I guess, the inner monologue we can distrust. You know the one where there is no reason to lie. But we can totally take Airi's word. There is no way she could just lie like everyone else. Especially since we KNOW for sure that she lied at least once when saying that she saw no one entering Mitsuba's hut (the lie is either her saying she observed it the whole night or that she saw no one enter).

Yuki, Koyomi, Mozuku and Airi has formed a group to protect themselves, so if one manages to remove the chip, she will alert others. So by the time Essay knows one has removed, she is unable to touch them anymore.

Meanwhile, Maguma, Hizumi and Mitsuba distanced themselves from the group so they are Essay's primary targets. After knowing that Maguma also removed the chip and Hizumi and Mitsuba died, Essay knows that she is unable to do anymore for the remaining time. Her last chance is the 7th day when she can steal guns from organizer (rescue ship).

Essay's 7th day is the very reason why Hakushi called her a genius because Essay's level of exploiting loophole in the game is on another level far exceed hers. Who even think of a scenario where you can steal weapons from organizer to use in game without permission but still valid the game's rule?

u/mrsomeawe 6d ago

Hizumi fell into the spike pit as is shown at 1:02:44, with Essei standing in front of her body on the third day of her POV sequence.

Who and why dragged the body back to the hut I do not know.

2

u/ModieOfTheEast 6d ago

As mentioned in another comment, if the idea was truly for Hizumi to have fallen to her death, then it would make sense that Airi dragged her to the hut to make a case for Yuki that she can't be the killer.

3

u/Zhaix 8d ago

I think Maguma is the one dead in the pit?

13

u/drt0 8d ago edited 7d ago

Both shots we get of the pit with the spikes, it looks like someone with fair skin is in it and Maguma is tanned.

Not really sure what's going on with these shots of the pit, looks like 2 different characters are in it, none who look like Maguma and it doesn't make sense for anyone else to be inside the pit?! Can it be a production error?

8

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

First one did look like Yuki which threw me for a loop because that is her swim suit. But after thinking about it, an option might be that it was supposed to be the third victim. She followed Airi after she ran away which is why Airi is the one standing over her body in the pit (maybe it was even a fight that ended like that). And the reason we later see her in her hut is because Airi staged the body to be killed by the serial killer in order to prove to Yuki that she can't be the one.

4

u/Big-Duck 4d ago

I guess Yuki just felt like t-posing in the middle of the spikes for fun.

Also, who's digging these damn pits?? In the final battle there seem to be even more pits! Didn't look like they had spikes by then though. It's not like they were given shovels, so it must have taken quite a long time to move that much dirt...

3

u/drt0 4d ago

I think the pits could be there before the game to make it more interesting.

3

u/Zhaix 8d ago

I agree with you. But shes the only one i noticed missing after that

3

u/mrsomeawe 6d ago

The first shot is Yuki, the second is the yellow-eyed girl Hizumi (Kyara's student, the glass-breaker), who accidentally fell into the pit and died, seemingly only so that fate could deny Essei a single kill.

5

u/drt0 6d ago

You think Yuuki is completely unhurt while Hizumi dies from the pit when their situation looks the same? Airi and Yuuki didn't acknowledge the pit at all either.

Woohoo! Beach episode!!

[remembers what show I'm watching, emotion shifts towards anxiety]

ETA:

This was beautiful. I enjoyed the different side of Yuki, seeing her be more vulnerable was interesting.

I gotta say though.. while I love the artwork, direction, and sound design a lot - I'm not sure I followed everything. I feel like sometimes it was leaning a little too heavy into the symbolism.

It could just be that we're not supposed to understand everything yet - like Yuki's blackouts (just trauma, or something more?) - or maybe it went over my head, or it might be intentionally vague.

I know my liking-the-show bias is skewing my judgment here and I'd like to think it's intentional, but I also know it was lacking in the story and details elements.

7

u/BosuW 8d ago

From interviews with the director, I have no doubt that everything about his works is extremely intentional. For Shiboyugi's case, it is a bit divisive because the presentation assigns character exploration to actions and ambience quite heavily. That's a classic live action cinema approach actually, but very rare in anime, so it can be disorienting. But the bottom line is do not ever expect Shiboyugi to explain you shit, because 75% of the necessary narrative information in this anime is sensory, not logical.

5

u/ResearcherPretty4139 7d ago

It could just be that we're not supposed to understand everything yet - like Yuki's blackouts (just trauma, or something more?) - or maybe it went over my head, or it might be intentionally vague.

The blackouts were from the chips embedded into each person's wrist. It wasn't spelled out verbatim but the "Mishiro ghost" who was talking to Yuki inside that 3D box who cut open Yuki's wrist was pretty much Yuki realizing that the chip was making her incapacitated each night until she and the other game players removed them. The culprit of Cloudy Beach was supposed to use that incapacitation to murder the other players while that chip left them defenseless, but pretty much everybody had found out by Day 4 and removed them.

Is it just me or is the bartender the first male we have seen ever in this series. Always thought it’s an all woman society.

8

u/ResearcherPretty4139 7d ago

Yuki got a call on a Pay Phone from a male a few episodes back (the father of the girl who Yuki killed in EP1) so the bartender would be at least Male #2

8

u/CrimsonGear80 8d ago

i still want to know how her teacher and essei were able to put their bodies back together and walk around just fine.

it was pretty funny with essei being "fuck it, i'm just going to grab an AK"

The weapons keep getting deadlier with each game. I wonder if eventually we'll just be having a full on Vietnam mass event.

I may not understand the complexities of this ambitious cinematic sequel to Shiboyugi season 1, but I will say it was good to see Yuki and Airi again as they dealt with this cloudy beach murder mystery.

6

u/ChiliDemon 8d ago

Is the 80->3 game that happened during cloudy beach going to get a movie/eps or even the after math?

6

u/BosuW 8d ago

If they talked about it I'm guessing that's teasing a continuation but no announcements have been made as of yet

6

u/Monztamash 8d ago

Can some SHIBOYUGI expert explain something to me ?

Did Hakushi (the teacher) actually die and revive from CANDLE WOODS game, or was it Essei pretending to be her that died and revive.

The thing I don't get is that it seems Essei also figured out how to revive from being killed, so I'm not sure if she was in CANDLE WOODS disguising as Hakushi, or Hakushi teached her how to fix herself up from death.

7

u/BosuW 8d ago

Neither of them actually die. They're just so body modded that getting eviscerated won't kill them. Hakushi because she's played so much, and Essei in imitation of her.

Never at any point did Essei pretend to be Hakushi.

4

u/ElliotAlderson2024 7d ago

I'm pretty sure Yuki killed Essei on the island.

4

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 6d ago

I think the Essei on the last scene was a dream or an hallucination. Hakushi seems to slap out of it.

1

u/Monztamash 8d ago

Ok. I guess it was the way the other girl was talking about Hakushi "not being dead" that I thought maybe it was Essei in disguise that was in CANDLE WOODS.

6

u/PolicyDue6086 5d ago

4

u/Jas_God 8d ago

Well this was a pleasant surprise today, absolutely loved it. Towards the end of the first season it started falling off for me, but this movie brought me right back. It’s crazy that I never even heard this was being made, a true shadow drop for me.

4

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

It was an interesting movie and it is a somewhat okay ending to the season of the show. Considering that we have a closure to Hakushi's death. Will be interesting to see where the show wants to go from here. Yuki does not need to win for her teacher's sake after all. But the after credit scene implies that she goes on. And considering that this comes with her agent mentioning that 85 people died, I assume it might even go further into the real of trying to save as many people. Like before, but now as the main motivation.

Now what I want to talk about more is a point that was never really addressed during the movie. And that was the case of the third victim. Essay mentioned in her monologue that she didn't kill anyone. First one was fake, second was a suicide. But then she never mentions the third. So what happened here? My assumption, Airi killed her. And the motivation was to help Yuki.

Yuki was obviously in stress due to thinking that she could be the killer. Which Airi didn't believe in, but wasn't able to convince her of. Even her saying that she observed the outside the whole time was probably a lie since she would have seen a hooded figure enter the house (aka Essay). But even that lie didn't help Yuki. So the only option for her was to stay with Yuki the whole night and then tell her she didn't do anything. And to make it more believable, she killed someone so that Yuki had to come to the conclusion, the killer is someone else. Yuki even mentioned that she never saw Airi sleep, so that would fit even more here.

And to add to that, the girl who was killed was coincidently the one who nearly killed Airi during the day. So I assume it was easier for her to argue that this girl's death was a positive over all.

The question is now why the movie never reveals this. It could be a lack of time, but it might also imply that Airi could come back in the future and it being revealed there during an important moment. She became a lot different to her time of Candlewoods after all.

6

u/drt0 8d ago edited 8d ago

Are we supposed to know who killed Hizumi and what happened to Maguma? Hizumi doesn't seem to have been killed by Essei from what we see in the flashbacks and Maguma disappears as well.

The pit girl that Airi finds I can't identify and right after Airi tells Yuki that she hasn't found Maguma. Maybe this is supposed to be Maguma but there was a production error with the pit scene with Airi?

The pit girl in Essei's flashback looks like Hizumi but that doesn't explain how her corpse got back to the beach house. Maybe that's how Hizumi died and then Essei dragged her to the beach house and made it look like she was disemboweled but it wasn't shown in the flashback, so I'm not sure?

I'm also not sure how Mozuku faked her death? Was it supposed to look like she electrocuted herself with the hair drier?

I'm guessing it's still a mystery how Hakushi and Essei were able to survive disembowelment but it puts into question how many of the deaths we've seen are final and how many girls were left dead when they could have been revived.

2

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

I think the implication is that Hizumi was killed by Airi. Airi's goal was to get Yuki back to being confident. Because she at least assumed that Yuki wasn't the killer (not sure if she knew or just thought this). Even her lie seemed to not help (because if she did observe the outside, she would have seen the hooded Essay enter the hut, so either she lied that she saw no one or that she observed the whole time). So all she could think of was creating a situation that would convince Yuki and get her old self back. By letting her stay with her, telling her in the morning, nothing happened (especially since Yuki would expect a dead Airi) and to make clear there is a different killer, kill Hizumi who she had an argument with anyway during the day.

I am just not sure why they kept this a secret in the end. So probably going to be a point in a later game.

2

u/drt0 7d ago

Hmm I think I agree that the pit girl is probably Hizumi, but it doesn't explain why the body looks like Hizumi in the scene with Essei but looks more like Yuuki in the scene with Airi. Maybe it's a production error (forgot to replace an art asset in the first scene)?

Do you think Maguma survived and just didn't show up at the end?

3

u/ModieOfTheEast 7d ago

First shot also has a different hair style for Airi, so I think production error is very likely. Honestly, the first time, I was assuming that Yuki just fell into the pit (because she was not at her best) but luckily survived and Airi helped her out. But since there is a second scene with a girl in the pit, production error is likely.

Which wouldn't be a first. There were some others before (like during Yuki's fight with Mishiro in the bathhouse, her legs were tied but not in the shot from above). But I think, this one is a bit of a shame. Because the show managed to get around the low details, just by giving the characters very distinct hair colors and styles. And in this case, even easily recognizable swim suits. So you don't need a lot of detail to recognize the person even in the low detail moments. But now, the same thing kind of backfired it seems.

As for Magumo, I am really not sure. I don't even understand why she left the group when they found out how they are vulnerable in the night. Maybe she thought, now she can defend herself better alone? It could be that was her meant in the pit, but it would be strange that both version don't look like her at all.

3

u/drt0 6d ago

What do you think about how Mozuku faked her death? Am I correct to think she made it look like electrocution with the hair drier? It looked a bit weird to me.

3

u/ModieOfTheEast 6d ago

Yes, I think that was the implication. They mentioned that they could fool Essay because she has to actually kill. And since she doesn't have much time anymore (only until the ship arrives) she can't take a lot of time to properly ckeck (tbf, she could have just shot her anyway, but I give her that this wouldn't necessarily cross your mind at this moment).

So yeah, I think she either collected the foam beforehand or just cut herself to get some and then made it look like she was electrocuted with foam coming from her mouth.

Mitsuba: Confidently sees through the situation except she's completely wrong

Mitsuba: Kills herself of cringe

She's so based

So Essei faked her death and is the killer, Mitsuba said peace out... who killed the third person?

Oh look Essei locked the fuck in.

...Nvm that was easy lol

And Mitsuba commiting sudoku actually helped the others win the game.

Third person was probably killed by Airi in order to get Yuki's confidence back.

Spoilers in the SMC still must be tagged.

Genuinely can’t stop laughing at your thought process here.

‘If you wanna know as a anime only what exactly this new anime content is without getting into any source material spoilers or specifics, you can’t ask ‘is this a new season?’ here in the anime only section of the comments.’

‘You have to go into the only section of the comments specifically designed for source material readers discussing source material content because the anime didn’t mention what this is first’.

But okay man. I just… won’t ask anything next time lol. My bad.

So Cloudy Beach has a killer on the loose like Candle Woods but the difference was that Essei was just given the role while Kyara's an actual psycho who's in it for the love of the game.

Pretty diabolical that she had to meet the quota by her own hands instead of simply a death toll by the end of the week. It meant that Mitsuba didn't count as that's a suicide. Think her only real kill in this game was Hizumi.

Yuuki thought she somehow blanked out and somehow became the killer. However, a lap pillow from Airi's all it took to bring her back to her senses. Not gonna lie though, it's not far-fetched to think such a sweetie pie's laps have healing properties.

Be interesting if Yuuki was actually assigned the killer and the protagonist had to be the villain.

Ah shit that's definitely gonna be a future game.

She didn't even kill Hizumi, she just fucked her up after the poor girl fell into the spike pit

I watched it just because. I didn't really change my opinion of the series or made me want more or anything. My general opinion of the series being "it's fine". I think this could've easily been like 3-4 episodes of the next season if they made one. It's kinda like your typical 'arc' in the anime, just you're getting it all in one go.

I thought that premature celebration was gonna turn out much, much worse than it actually did but Yuki is just on another level.

Wasn't expecting the initial end credits song to be that snazzy.

I enjoyed watching the series and this was 90 mins of pretty decent anime.

Is it my turn now to show my power point presentation?

This move felt like 2 episodes stretched into a movie.

Great money, it even had a fake ending.

The plot is definitely interesting but I have a feeling that if the animation was not so amazing I would have not watched it.

I know it's probably not something a lot of people enjoy, but I really love how this anime dives into Yuki's psyche. It just paints such a great picture of her condition without explicitly telling the viewer. Seeing how Candle Woods effected her so heavily was great, and I love that trauma leading her to believe she herself is the killer.

Hope we get more, I'd like to see how killing Essei the way she did effects her going forward, considering she killed her the same way Kyara would. Seems like Kyara is sort of a part of Yuki now, for better or worse (Probably worse).

The main strength of this anime is showing how repeated games effect Yuki and other players psychologically. It's great, because nobody would be able to play this many death games and remain in one piece.

I had a whole multi paragraph write up but deleted it.

I'll just say this.

This was really bad.

Agreed. Shiboyugi's pacing was pretty slow at the best of times, but this movie flows like molasses. Idk if they ran out of budget, or if they just doggedly were set on hitting full feature length, but you could trim 15 min worth of mood-setting shots where nothing happens without sacrificing anything.

The animation, direction, etc most certainly made it look like they ran out of budget. The amount of dialogue over still background shots. Long cuts away while everyone introduced themselves (God forbid the viewer actually know who the characters talking are!) 15 mins is generous. This could have been 30 mins long and nothing of value would have been lost.

Update: I realized that what is listed as episode 12 is actually the movie, so I've already seen it!

Original comment:

Commenters have seen 44: CLOUDY BEACH, but for some reason I cannot find it. This Crunchyroll article said it would be available for streaming on July 13 (the date of the release in Japan), but it's not there. I am located in the United States. I searched both in the web app and on my Chromecast app, and the movie isn't listed in a dropdown on the series page.

Where can I watch it?

I'm a certified shiboyugi fan with the flair to prove it so don't take any of this the wrong way.

  1. I love the art and style of the show, but the multiple group still shots did make it hard for me to tell who was talking a few times.

  2. I think the glimpses we get into Yuki's mind as a person who is very much moulded by playing death games is great and probably my favorite part of the show. That being said, it feels kind of cheap and unnecessary to use her guilt as a misdirection plot point. Especially when it is so loosely 'explained' as her appearing in certain important places and then not having memory afterwards. I actually think the movie would have been more interesting if she had been assigned as the killer because it would be a lot more tragic (or emotionally powerful) and a better way for her to wrestle with what role killing plays in her life. Although that might happen later in the series so I'm not sure.

  3. I have a hard time following complex plots even when they aren't in this artsy style where things are barely explained but there are two things I have to bring up that are weird. The first is did Essay 'invade' the rescue battleship on a raft to steal an AK? If so that makes no sense to me (how would she even do that?). The second much bigger issue is how they barely explained Hakushi's 'revival' (or I guess she wasn't dead?). If you can survive that way wouldn't that mean you had to have had enhancements which should theoretically be against the rules? And even if it wasn't against the rules at that point you have such a big advantage that its basically cheating.

Also as a side note, not to be weird about it, but it feels so out of place to have a muscular girl in the game since we haven't really seen that before? It's weird because obviously being jacked is a big advantage in probably most games, but none of the professional players put in that effort. I'm guessing the in universe explanation for why they don't is that the viewers don't like it? Also Yuki repeatedly carries girls on her back long distances even though she seems quite small and that she wouldn't be that strong.

  1. The reveal that Hakushi not only had other students but also is alive and actually just retired seems like it should be absolutely earth-shattering for Yuki, but it doesn't feel that way in the final scene. It seems like she somewhat reverts to how their relationship was before she 'died' and is more focused on how Hakushi had other students. Yuki's whole purpose in life was to carry on her mentor's legacy by accomplishing the goal that Yuki watched her brutally 'die' trying to achieve. Finding out she just actually retired to me seems like she should almost have been pissed and should have been a much bigger reckoning. Like Hakushi telling her she is free to follow on her own path now: haha thanks why didn't you tell me that 15 games ago when you didn't die xd.

All that being said, I still enjoyed the movie and love the animated shiboyugi product. Hopefully we get more :)

Finished Shibuyugi and I can't stop thinking about that final conversation between Hakushi and Yuki. When she asks her mentor who she wanted to see again after the game, and Hakushi answers "Essei" without hesitation... that hit differently.

It really makes you wonder about the nature of their bond. Was Essei always the one Hakushi cared for the most, even quietly, throughout the whole story? Or does absence just weigh differently once someone's gone — like longing reshapes what "wanting" someone back even means?

I don't think it's necessarily about ranking who Hakushi loved "more." But there's something quietly devastating about hearing your mentor name someone else in that moment. Curious how others read that scene — did it feel like a confession of favoritism, or something more bittersweet?
