Wondering if I can watch this standalone. Is this a compilation of the 12 episodes of the show but with new scenes? Or is it a sequel?

Yes, you can watch this standalone. It is a complete compilation of all 12 episodes with new scenes.

Ooh. I really enjoyed the series even though each ep went by so fast. Will be fun to rewatch with added scenes.

The series and movies are different versions of the same thing. However, they are a sequel to MILKY☆HIGHWAY, so definitely watch that first.

Do you know where I can watch that, I'm struggling to find anything but the sequel

This is probably the only recap movie that I have recollection being superior to it's based of tv series.
Loved how each attached segment has some takeaway with Ryoko and her cop partner. The bit where they are both explaining the gist of the conflict to their boss after we had the same skit with her and Chiharu was highly amusing to me. The little bit where for those who watched the tv series and expected the ending theme to pop up, but we had Ryoko's partner humming the same theme was such a treat.

This was really fun to watch again. Had been long enough since I saw the originals I can’t swear I recognized all the new stuff but there was a lot that felt like I’d not seen it before. But they integrated it well enough it all flowed well. Only real regret in watching this way is not getting the chance to hear that groovy ending sequence song more often. Netflix felt like it cut it off early too, probably since I didn’t click on “watch credits” quickly enough.

Skipped the original because 3D CGI. Accidentally started watching this and IT IS THE BEST WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY TELL ME SOONER?!

For me Netflix shows it only comes out tomorrow. Is it a timezone thing?

Really insane that they rolled it out per timezone. Do they do that for all dated releases? Extremely stupid.
Edit: Seems like the answer is “No.”. Huh. Wonder why they did such a stupid thing for this movie.

That was fun to watch again! I liked the expanded role of the police characters.
Chiharu is still the best girl.

Watched this last night. Legitimately one of the best things I've ever watched; I can't believe I stumbled on it by accident.

I tuned in with little expectations but was blown away. The stars are probably the writing and direction. An offbeat sense of humor permeates throughout the script. Plenty of callbacks. Dialogues in both English and Japanese feel natural with characters talking over each other. Characters are likeable, even side characters like the police. There's an attention to detail that make interactions feel real in a wacky world.
It left me excited for this creator's next project.

there has been hints of bonus content in the movie, so it should have a bit more stuff then the show

it does, added scene basically adding a whole side thread to the story centered on Ryoko

Ooh time to see if the movie added anything new.
So, the first added scene is obvious, it's the female cop and another male cop reporting to their superior.
Ooh, another new scene introducing the new guy when the train left.
And now a scene introducing the boss.
So, they're chasing after them in their hover-van.
Oh god it's this thing again.
So, they're trying to put the pieces together.
Yep. There's the link.
So, she's now arguing with him to go look for them.
Oh, she actually managed to reach them?
The call cut off?
And so they're off to save them.
Well, they saved themselves well enough.

I'm not sure why they didn't release it in this format in the first place

for anyone who slept on the ONA it's time to wake up, this is the best break out show this year, from someone basically unknown to the industry
one of the best show this season and the season it was showing as an ONA
