Oh boy this was a week of ups and downs. I got a LOT of reading in on KU and Royal Road.
Kindle Unlimited
Void Sovereign: A LitRPG Apocalypse. Book 1.
Returned within two chapters. Poor writing (again the odd lack of contractions and conversations that sound like someone has never spoken English) on a technical front. And just bad setup? The MC is a stupidly badass loner who lives in the wood… as a 13 year old kid. Who can set perfect traps, sneak up on anyone, and beat up adults. Who has such STRONG WILLPOWER that the system qualifies it as double the normal humans, who can withstand weeks of unrelenting soul torture. Immediately gets a dozen titles for being the specialest boy ever.
I’m not even going into the plot because I couldn’t get past how bad everything else was. Also, this badass 13 year old, who lives and grew up in our regular world, is called Aenon. No. Just stop. 0.5/5
Andy in the Apocalypse. Book 2.
This thankfully was great. A standard system integration series, by the writer of Victor of Tucson. It doesn’t do anything unexpected or particularly different, but it just does all of it very competently. Guy living in a trailer park when System appears, gets a class, gets more powerful, leads town by being a generally good guy. Again. If you’ve read any System Integration style books you’ve read all of this just done very well. 4/5
The Daily Grind. Book 1.
A regular office drone in our world discovers that between around 3AM in his office, one certain stairway opens up into a slightly warped, backrooms-ish version of an office. One with murderous stapler creatures, candy that doesn’t exist on our earth, and those creatures drop orbs that give you Skills. Not like “Throw Fireball” but more “Cooking Skill: Pancakes”. He (and friends he recruits) explore this odd place and loot it for stuff. There’s obviously more going on, but I’m one book down so far. The characters seem like actual people, the combat goes how you’d expect regular office people to fight stapler monsters or sapient copy machines with teeth, and this got me playing Abiotic Factor again. 4/5
Royal Road
In a world where kaiju have appeared and attacked the world, the MC dies.. And wakes up as a baby monster in a dungeon where they have to kill and eat to progress. Monster evolution, but there’s a heart behind the writing. The character thinks and processes things like a person even though they’re a monster. Then there’s the weird section where he makes an army of slimes, not sure about that, but they’ve just started getting into the backstory and “why” of the world. Compelling. 4/5
I recommended this heavily last week. And it goes off a cliff around Book 4 in terms of quality, with the end of that book being unexciting enough that I gave up on this entirely. First 3 books great. Fourth book, bleh

Delver (web) - male mc, litrpg. First person, so that was almost a nonstarter. Made it a solid dozen chapters, and the simple sentence structure also starts to grate. DNF
Sleight of hand (web) - male mc, litrpgish. So I'm still not even sure the MC is the mc, as perspective tends to drift a lot. Not particularly engaging for me, but this will probably be a fun read for some folks around here. Everyone has an innate ability and a single stat, dunno if it gets any more gamey afterwards because I DNF.
Behemoth of the ocean (web) - multiple MC, litrpg. Picked this one up because I'm on a cruise ship. I'll be honest, a woman named Keith certainly was a mark against this one. But the frequently switching povs killed it for me, particularly when it switches to non crew. DNF

Been a while since I paid attention on a Monday but I am currently reading The Runemaster 2. I devoured book 1 in a day. It's a shorter book, at around 4800... locations? sentences? words? I don't know what Amazon uses to measure that number, but I thought it read easy and was plenty interesting. Guy is reincarnated as a baby in a system where he's a Runemaster. Book 2 is a School arc, and I'm a sucker for those.
Since I last updated, I finished Ruin the last book of the Unbound series, and I thought it stuck the landing really well. Unbound is definitely one of my favorite series, so while I'm sad to let the characters go, I think that Book 12 was a fitting end. I also finished Not (Just) a Mage Lord Isekai and will probably go back to book 2 after I finish up book 3 of Runemaster.

On KU, I picked up volume one of The Earthen Contenders 1-3 (Unexpecgted Healer). I'm struggling. Someone might love this but it's more a sunk cost fallacy than anything else, which is what lead me to the next two:
RR: Department of Otherworldly Rescue: Imagine if someone abducted a child to make them the chosen hero, and someone else, someone with a big fucking gun, said "Kidnapping is morally wrong and also likely to get you extra breathing holes installed?" I binged it on RR like a jilted bride on a wedding cake for 200. Then joined the patreon at least for a month just to say "Thanks" for all the spent shells.
Gun Soul: I saw this mentioned here last week and thought "Why not?" The thing I love about it is that it's batshit crazy and leans into it hard. Cultivating the way of the Gun is hilarious and awesome, and I say that as someone who has stood outside a church with a sign that said "Services at 11, Gun Show at 1!" If you want a cultivation mixed with a western mixed with mad max and fallout (Wasteland?) references, where herds of spirit cars can be lured in with gasoline--if you can get behind the steering wheel and tame them--it's fun. I'm enjoying it so far, enough to recommend it. It appears to be a one-off but that's cool.

So I'm about to start book eight of Dungeon Crawler Carl and hadn't really read anything in the lit RPG space until this series. It's been an incredible journey so far, and I'd love some recommendations on what books or series I should read next or look into next because I'll be finishing this book for DCC here pretty soon.

So fair warning DCC is like the best of litrpg, so unfortunately it will all be a little bit downhill from here!
Some general suggestions for other big famous stories:-
- He Who Fights With Monsters is a big fantasy series where the MC goes to another world and gets cool powers and gets up to all sorts of shenanigans, similar funny tone but a bit lighter. Lots of stat stuff.
- Cradle is a like asian/eastern flavoured fantasy adventure about a guy who has no special abilities, and then slowly finds his place in the world and gets stronger. It has a slow start, but some of the best fight scenes in progression fantasy (which is like the litrpg mother genre).
- Mother of Learning is a story about a guy at a magical school that ends up stuck in a time loop, and having to repeat the same months over and over before everything blows up. Great introduction to those kinds of stories.

Alpha Agent https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0F94QZ3GZ/ref=ku_mi_rw_edp_ku - Cyberpunk Litrpg with a male MC. MC lives in NYC and gets into a gang fight. He's left for dead and a corporation finds him. They give him the choice of serving or dying. He agrees to serve and is given enhancements. Then he has to further corporate interests. I only made it two or three pages before dropping this. The writing was too try hard to be cool and badass. But what really got me was constantly calling one character the chick instead of naming her, using pronouns, or other descriptors. It just wore on my nerves something fierce.
Ensign Year 1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0GY6H222S/ref=ku_mi_rw_edp_ku - Slice of life mil scifi with a male MC. The MC is 17, almost broke, and lives alone on a backwater space station. He's skilled with data, computers, piloting, and repairing things. The MC dreams of going to the naval academy one day and doesn't like owing people for anything. Anyway, he loses his living quarters and decides to commit fraud to get assigned to a ship that is taking on new crew at the station before setting out to colonies that haven't had contact from the rest of civilized space in 40 years. As part of his fraud, he constructs a persona that is supposed to be as middle of the road bland as possible. Of course, he ends up standing out. Sometimes in good ways, but mostly in bad ways by repeatedly doing the same stupid poo. I'm a tad over halfway, and the MC refuses to follow simple orders or even learn from his mistake(s). Then the leadership keep putting him in situations where he can screw things up and the MC doesn't face repercussions for his actions other than get a disappointed look or talking to. That is a turnoff and I'm considering dropping the book. And that's a shame since the writing is pretty good and the author notes in the blurb he wrote this he wanted a story like the old Star Trek shows and something that wasn't just galactic wars, armadas, and prophecies.

This is the story of a half elf hunter that dreams of becoming a ranger and defending civilization from the monsters of the wilds. He gets accepted to the adventurers' academy and sets out for it. Along the way, he and his spirit friend encounter a few challenges. The MC bonds with a fox during this journey and at the academy finds things aren't quite what he expected.

Not too bad a week for me!
Fate Unravelling (1-80ish) - RR, cultivation. Young man with big ambitions expects to shake the sect, only to find two truly heavens-blessed rivals overshadow him - before a chance encounter gives him a set of memories from another world. My random pick from the cultivation tag on RR, this was significantly better than I had expected, doing a lot with the cradle DNA that must have inspired the author. Between sanding off the worst of the xianxia tropes & some real ambition with it's system and storytelling, this was a real treat for me and joins the likes of Ten Thousand Tragedies, Tales of an Ordinary Cultivator, and Cultivation Nerd in my favourite stories in the subgenre. 4.5 out of 5. I gather it is a bit of a rewrite of the first go, and it makes me wish that a lot of stories that had potential get the same treatment.
I liked:-
- Great characters (and twists on ones you know!). The main trio of characters are all interesting and quite different to one another - the MC having some isekaid memories certainly makes him stand out (and I did like some refreshing changes in what is considered his 'primary' identity in a way), while the other two leads have their own insane secrets, backstories, and fortunate encounters. The supporting cast are all quite good as well, and there are even some memorable villains - and even the one off twist on the arrogant young master in the obligatory tournament arc was very different!
- A surprisingly deep system for cultivation. There's a lot more going on here than I expected with quite an original take on cultivation (honestly, the most stereotypical thing is using the rainbow colours for the names of the realms, which is irreparably linked to YA for me). One of the things I found the most interting is that in this system, cultivation is really painful - and then exploring that to show how not everyone has the willpower to even do it, and how it means that different people can cultivate at different rates just from not wanting to go through it again, and more! There's also more stat-wankery than I expected for something that doesn't have the typical litrpg stat menu, especially around the utterly unfair heavenly gifts that some characters get.
- An interesting plot. While you will have seen sect politics, the obligatory tournament arc, dungeon crawling, and a higher level hidden realm before, the execution of the genre mainstays was really well done - I was particularly impressed with the sect politics, which is simultaneously engaging with twist and turns I didn't expect and clearly for peanut stakes compared to the world-building we are being introduced to. There is one flaw with the story however....
I didn't like:-
- Very slow pace. 80 chapters and four arcs only really covers about a month of story time & doesn't even progress a major realm. The story is all great, but there's a humongous amount to cover and it will take a long time to get through the scope of the story we are being promised. I'll have to wait a good year to build up enough chapters for a comparably sized binge.
I also did a quasi-beta read of my friend Claire's story Reconnecting is Hard (from the litrpg discord), who is a fellow regular in the discord. It's a very interesting if still WIP story, with strong influences from a variety of interesting authors (Bavitz' DNA is all over it) mashed up with an inventive litrpg system and setting. 4 out of 5.
I've been saving up chapters of The Hundred Reigns and somehow have ended up with like a hundred over only a few months, so that's up next!

I started reading Path of Dragons a couple weeks ago and blew through the four books on KU, I started reading some of the other ones on RR, but it looks like there are 11? So I’m just wondering if anyone knows how far behind the KU is in getting the books versus the ones online.

Path of Dragons is up to book 15 or 16 on patreon. The author does 9 chapters a week. Dude is a monster. But I like it, it's still going strong.

Listening to Mark of the Fool 1: It’s a fun story but I get the feeling it might be too YA for me.
Reading
Wasteland Warlords 5 (Kindle): A fun short series from the author of Discount Dan. It’s a follow up story to Rogue Dungeon.
Most Intimidating Knight (RR): Started it during the weekend and thoroughly enjoying it. Also quite funny.
Want to read: can’t decide between starting this trilogy is broken or bog standard isekai.

Just finished the Emerita series by Daniel Schinhofen. Pretty standard harem-y stuff from him . Earlier work, so it's a bit rougher than his more recent stuff. Fun alt-historyesqe US West, with elves, dwarves, and beast-kin.
Also just finished After the Tower by M.S. McCollum. Interesting world building, where every year, humans get their powers and levels reset back to level 0, with the opportunity to pick up different classes, but there were only four available base classes...until the MC finds a crystal with one of the lost Crafter classes.

The Center for Dungeon Management: litrpg set in modern day Pittsburgh with an MC who is working for the federal bureau that handles the appearance of dungeons, and gets to run some himself. Its a great System non-apocalypse, and is delightfully PA specific. Real world locations, believable societal changes (the System appeared after WW2) and the goal is delving dungeons and closing them by beating the boss, so the monsters don't surge out when it collapses. Delves into the economics and societal changes brought about by it.

Been off in not reading land for a while.
Read the first two in the mike Truk set, which def exceeded my expectations, very well plot driven haremlit, with more flawed MC and set of side characters than I expected
Also read the first two of the warlock series and thought they were better than expected with various plot threads and slice of life elements
read dungeon diving 101 as well, and liked it Bruce sentar def makes the plot go forward, and has a clear voice for each character.
Now i'm plotting out what happens chapter by chaper in dd 101 to see if I want to write one of these short harem novels myself
I'll put the rest of everything I've written on RR in late aug once the kids are in school and have a vote one which story gets to live and which ones I kill and delete the whole files forever, which I am looking forward to doing

Gym Book: finished the second book in the Ashes of Vaeltharion series. A PTSD suffering ranger is summoned to save a kingdom and is almost immediately rejected as the wrong guy. Their mistake as he discovers purpose, friends, and a reason to stop drinking. In the second book there’s a ton of training, dungeons and some new and interesting companions. I think this is a terrific series and I think you will too.
Next week, a lot of good books are coming out, so I didn’t have anything to follow up that book at the gym so I tried the Department of Otherworld Rescue (on RR, and due to all the recs here). I’m really enjoying it and it reminds me a lot of the Doomfarers of Coramonde, a series written by Brian Daly who’s probably best known for his Han Solo spinoff books. It’s from 1977, and follows a summoned APC and crew into a fantasy world. Not LITRPG but great.
Audio: still enjoying the Victor series by Plum Parrot.
Reading: Finished Applied Cultivation, again due to recommendations here. Almost noped out due to a near SA at the start, but it was dealt with ok, and then there aas a little too much crab story, but i enjoyed it. A little Delve-y sort of progression story with good characters and relationships.

Been reading Path to Transcendence. It's high C tier or low B tier book. Perfectly fine if you like genre litrpg where MC gets stronger and all the characters have the same dialogue. I felt it was like the opposite of Sky Pride where that book was heavy with meaning and then this one is just junk food with some good fights. MC keeps sandbagging his fighting style to cover his weaknesses, so don't expect him to fight all out unless his life is in danger. I would only recommend this to fellow litrpg degenerates that have run out of things to read.
Here are the books I recommend that I am currently reading. All these stories are around 4.5 or 5 and worth reading.
Wandering Inn- The best story I have ever read. Chess player gets isekaid and becomes an [Innkeeper]. The world expands as the story progresses and it moves from comfy slice of life to epic fantasy. This story is around 14 million words with less than half on audio book. People read it and wish it were longer. Fantastic story.
Butcher of Gadobrha- A group of players become peasants in a vrmmo to work for a company. They are heavily limited on wearing armor or using weapons. But they end up grinding their way to power while working for the man.
Tunnel Rat- A genetically modified genius, who was used for crime by a syndicate along with his cohort, has escaped. He lays low for years in the basement of a habitat fixing things when he finds that the syndicate has returned to the habitat with new VRMMO capsules that have been hacked to give better classes. Stealing the hacked capsule and sabatoging the operation, he enters the game to find himself as a ratkin. He gets to mining and finds himself in a world of trouble. This story has interesting in world stuff and out of world stuff.
That Time an American was Reincarnated into Another World- Isekai where the MC can summon guns. There is a monster horde that is threatening humanity and he resolves to bring Earth technology to turn the tides in the fight. Starts the story fighting criminals to later entering an academy and butting heads with nobles. Current arc is about fighting the Scourge. Good story that is fun but dark.
Beware of Chicken- Isekais into a cultivator at a sect that has just died from a duel. Understanding wuxia tropes, he nopes out of there to the edge of civilization and starts a farm. Uses his qi knowledge to farm and hijinks ensue. Very heartwarming and feel good story. There are some fights but everything works out. Great characters and good slice of life. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a palate cleanser or just a break from pointless conflict.
The Legend of William Oh- Classic tower climber with Diablo item mechanics. Great characters and fights. Really interesting powers and progression. Similar humor to other Macrinomicon stories.
Bog Standard Isekai- adult reincarnates into a kid in the middle of a catastrophe. He survives, earns some titles and gets adopted. This story is well written with interesting systems and characters. Pretty good plot as well. I always look forward to reading a new chapter.
Tree of Aeons- The original isekaid as a tree story. Starts by growing and leveling slowly to becoming a god and fighting the demon kings with their faithful empire. Does a good job with it. This is a completed story.
Mage Tank- Isekai into a dungeon dive character creation slot. Goes from delving dungeons to fighting divine avatars. Never stops dungeon diving. Has interesting power interactions. Good characters as well.
Beneath the Dragoneye Moons- Isekaid into a fantasy Rome. Remembers healing knowledge and uses it to revolutionize the healing arts in the world. This story is about a healer that goes on adventures and that hates adventurers. This is a completed story. Good story.
Beers and Beards- Isekaid into a dwarf by a God to revolutionize the beer industry. Good dwarf story that is strong with characters and beer knowledge. Completed story.
Elydes- Classic reborn as a baby that grinds early to unlock better classes and skills. Gets taught by a hidden master to learn fighting, alchemy and herbology. Well written story with good characters.
Adamant Blood by Arcs- same author as Arkendrithryst. That's an all time great in the genre and is a finished work. This is a darker story because the big bad is ever present and known by the reader from the very beginning. Monsters and demons and dragons which are just archmages merged with demons. Good story and pretty damn interesting. Hasn't grabbed me in the same way as his earlier work though. I don't like my MCs hunted always by way more powerful entities. It's a pet peeve of mine.
Dungeon Crawler Carl- Everyone knows about this story, but I will go over it for the uninitiated. Man and cat narrowly avoid dying in an alien apocalypse on earth only to enter into a Dungeon for shelter. The dungeon is a universal death game show. This story is tinged heavily with insanity and toes that line well. Big spells and even bigger explosions with an AI with a foot fetish for our MC. Join Carl in the court of Princess Donut as they work to survive and break the power of the aliens that toy with their lives.
The Bell Tolls for Me- This is a story of a Princess who becomes Queen after a long succession crisis that kills all the male heirs. She gets poisoned and killed by someone she thought was an ally and returns back in time to right after the king died. She starts with no allies and some dogged enemies and has to navigate court intrigue and romance to survive what will be a drawn out civil war. This is not Litrpg but a medieval renaissance fantasy. I recommend it here because it scratches the regression itch and is really good. Completed story.
Blue Star Enterprises- This story follows a person that wakes up in an advanced robot in the future. He bides his time, gains some freedom in the space station he found himself in, and pursues a career fixing technology. Things accelerate quickly and he soon finds himself leading a business and a small empire. Great fun to read. This is a finished story.
There is no Epic Loot here, Only Puns- This is a dungeon core story where the dungeon doesn't want to kill people. Many mushrooms and epic puns. Grace anatomy made me laugh out loud. Highly recommend for a chill vibe that's also very whimsy.
Redemption Arc- This is a story about a guy that played a video game so many times that he ended up doing a run where he tried to keep a two bit villain teammate alive throughout the story. He fails at the end but ends up finding himself in the game as the villain himself with terrible affinities and growth stats. Everyone hates him and his family disowns him almost immediately. He has to use his extensive prior knowledge to survive the storyline and get blessings in order to keep up with his more powerful teammates.
Path of the Last Champion- Story is long around 4k pages. 1st arc is a bit rough but it improves from there. Boy takes the death climb to escape from his slavery life and darkness. Goes through climb with party and learns about reality and how to fight as he goes. Sci fi with mostly medieval weapons. It gets much better as it progresses through the arcs. I originally wasn't going to rec it, but it did really get much better after the first arc. Still, it's a lot to read through until it becomes really enjoyable so I recommend the other stories over this one unless you want something long to read.
Second Life as a Soldier- College student wakes up in a homeless 15 year old who has just been beaten by debtors. With no food or shelter, he joins the army which has a very high mortality rate. Learns intelligence skills because he was trained as a scribe by his father. Good characters and system. Interesting world building. I like the progression.

Wayward: Running by T. A. Star - A terminally ill girl is visited by a witch, who heals her and sends her to another world, so she can meet the full potential of her soul.
I bought this solely because the MC is a trans woman, and I'm always on the lookout for litrpg with queer MCs. I'm enjoying it so far! The MC is a bit soft spoken and timid, but she's pretty fun when she opens up to people. I like her party and the father/daughter relationship she has with the stoic paladin who rescued her. She also has a pretty interesting power set with a space theme. I'm a decent ways into the second book and I'm still into it.
The big thing, however, is that this book is heavily inspired by He Who Fights With Monsters. Heavily. Like, it has the same system (but slightly different), the global adventurer's guild and corrupt magic guild, active gods named after their domain, and even some of the same plot beats. It does has its own things going on, but a lot of the broad strokes are just from HWFWM.
I do wish it was more original, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I still find it to be enjoyable.

Apocalypse Parenting 4 (KU): A suburban mom and her kids are wrapped up in a televised apocalypse. Series is getting traditional publication, and i realized i hadn't finished the last two books (5 book completed series). Some feel of DCC but the family aspect makes it rather unique in the genre. MC has 3 kids (youngest is 3), and navigating them fighting monsters and getting abilities and physical changes (like a tail) gives the story a good narrative hook).
Nameless Engineer (RR): FMC crashes on an alien planet and loses all her memories. She wakes up and integrates into a new system as an Engineer in some sort of challenge apparently against other factions of combat classes. Not far into this one yet, but liking it so far and enjoying the potential.
